It has been a long summer without any vampires, witches, or werewolves to occupy our time on Thursday nights. But, that long summer ends tonight. The Vampire Diaries is back with all new episodes for Season 3.

When we left Season 2, Jeremy was seeing dead people, Uncle John and Jenna had died, Damon was cured of a werewolf bite, and Stefan became a part of Klaus’ team.

Team Klaus:
I love that the opening scene of tonight season premiere is like a scene from a scary movie. Were you screaming at the girl to go back inside the house like I was?

Of course Klaus shows up and compels the girl. Klaus is and has been looking for a werewolf named, Ray. He is using the help of Stefan to find Ray. It’s interesting how he’s having Stefan do all the killing. Last season, Klaus told Stefan that he has some big plans for Stefan. Klaus must have known how Stefan is when it comes to blood. This leads me to wonder how long has Klaus known about Stefan. Seeing this Stefan makes me miss the old Stefan, the Stefan who sacrificed his happiness for the good of others. This Stefan, who rips innocent people apart because he’s blood thirsty and being Klaus’ puppet, I don’t like this Stefan.

Jeremy:
Jeremy’s got a summer job at the Grill with Matt. I think this is the first normal thing this kid has ever done or experienced. It’s a good thing because it almost balances out the supernatural things that are happening to him. Almost. Ever since he came back to life by magic, Jeremy has been seeing the ghost of Vicki and Anna. If this is like the Sixth Sense, he’s seeing ghosts because those said ghosts need his help. Ghosts stick around because they have some unfinished business. Maybe that’s why Jeremy is only seeing Vicki and Anna. If he were to see all dead people, he would be seeing his parents, Aunt Jenna, and Uncle John. But, Jeremy is only seeing Vicki and Anna, and Vicki does tell him in the car to help her. What could Vicki need help with? What about Anna? Is she still holding some deep dark secret from 1864?

Elena:
Elena spent the last two month trying to find leads about Klaus and Stefan. Poor girl, she’s heartbroken on her eighteenth birthday. Caroline and Sheriff Forbes are helping her get leads, but she’s not getting much help from Damon. I can’t blame Elena for not giving up. What’s a girl to do when the love of her life just left town to be a sidekick of the oldest vampire/werewolf of all time? Elena is trying to look after her little brother and worrying about Stefan at the same time. This girl has always had a lot of weight on her shoulders. It’s her birthday and she couldn’t even enjoy it. At least Caroline is trying to keep her mind off of Stefan by trying to get her to have fun. With friends like Caroline, who needs an army?

Caroline and Tyler:
Can these two hook up already? The attraction between them is so obvious that Matt or anyone would be stupid not to notice. They’ve been hanging out a lot over the summer and Matt is left feeling jealous and hurt. He really only have himself to blame. Matt can’t deal with Caroline’s reality and it’s a deal breaker when the girl you thought you love is a vampire. Elena and Stefan did break up because of this reason in Season One.

The interaction between Caroline and Tyler is pretty amusing. They are teenage hormones on crack who are about to explode. I’m glad to see they finally stopped being stupid around each other at the end. I can’t wait to see where this forbidden love story will lead.

Damon:
Damon grew out his hair a little longer during the summer. He’s been busy looking for his brother, so I’m sure he didn’t have time to make a trip to the hair salon. His opening scene with Elena is pretty funny to watch. By the way, I thought Andie was long gone. She has nothing to add to the story line. She has no purpose except for playing Damon’s girl toy. I didn’t think that she will be coming back this season, but I guess I was wrong.

However Damon started off in Season One, he had changed a lot and for the better. His closet is full of maps, notes, and newspaper clippings of leads on Stefan and Klaus. Most people would think that Damon would be happy Stefan is gone, so he can make a move on Elena. Damon is proving all of those people wrong tonight. He does care about his brother and he goes after every single lead to try and cover Stefan’s tracks. He’s trying to protect Stefan. When it comes down to it, blood is thicker than water.

Alaric:
Alaric is a mess. He drinks and brood all summer on the couch at the Gilbert house. In his defense, he has legitimate grounds for his brooding. He had just lost his girlfriend and in a way I think Alaric blamed himself for not being there to protect Jenna. For the past two seasons, Alaric’s role has been the town’s vampire hunter who teams up with Damon to get unwanted vampires out of town, and an occasional comic relief. His role needs to change a little bit this season. He needs to be the role model and guardian to Jeremy. The kid has no father figure left in his life. All he has is Alaric. I want to see Alaric’s story line develop more this season.

Ray:
Klaus’ target last season was Elena. He has a new target this season, well in this episode at least. Ray is a werewolf. Klaus wanted to find Elena last season to break the spell in order for him to become the full hybrid. Now that he is one, he wants to create whole new species like him to create an army. Klaus wants Ray to tell him about the rest of his pack. So, naturally Klaus has Stefan do the dirty work and he sits back and enjoy. Stefan tortures Ray with wolfsbane to get him to talk about the whereabouts of the pack. In the end, Klaus feeds his blood to Ray and snaps his neck. Ray is going to wake up and become a vampire, or should I say a hybrid?

Stefan:

If Stefan was putting up an act, then he is a really good actor. The opening scene alone scared me how much he had changed. The old Stefan wouldn’t have been able to do the things this Stefan is able to do. When Klaus finds out that Damon had been tracking them, he wanted to take care of it. Stefan tells Klaus he’ll take care of his brother and promises to come back. Stefan does take care of it, but at the sake of Andie’s life. He wasn’t going to kill his brother, so Andie had to die. Her story isn’t going anywhere any way.

Stefan did what he did to Andie to protect Damon. Let’s face it, if it were Klaus, he would have ripped Damon’s heart out. Not to mention what he would do if he finds out that Elena is still alive.

The scene where he calls Elena breaks my heart. It shows that the old Stefan is still there. Maybe he really was putting on a show for Klaus. He’s doing it to protect the people he loves – his brother and Elena.

Big Shocker Ending:
It wouldn’t be a Vampire Diaries episode without a cliffhanger ending. Of course Mrs. Lockwood knows about Caroline. How she found out, we don’t know yet but she puts vervain on Caroline’s purse and shot her with darts filled with vervain. I’m scared for Caroline’s life.

This isn’t really an epic episode, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I’m excited for the rest of the season. Does anyone else want to know what Katherine is up to, or is it just me? I was hoping she would make an appearance in tonight episode, but I’m sure she will show up some time this season. I hope all of you guys are as excited as I am. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

3.04 – Disturbing Behavior – Synopsis

by Angela on September 14, 2011

FAMILY TIES — Still in Chicago, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) uses Gloria (guest star Charmin Lee), a witch he knew long ago, to help him track down missing information that will explain why his plan isn’t working. Gloria’s spells reveal intriguing glimpses of the truth, but she soon realizes she needs Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) knowledge to complete the puzzle. When Stefan suddenly finds himself in danger, help comes from a surprising ally. Back in Mystic Falls, a frustrating new enemy pushes Damon (Ian Somerhalder) over the brink and he lashes out in a way that will have lasting consequences. Caroline (Candice Accola) struggles with her own emotional issues, even as she tries to help Elena (Nina Dobrev) face her feelings. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) makes a brief but disturbing breakthrough with one of his ghostly visitors, leaving him more confused than ever. Finally, Bonnie (Kat Graham) has a strange encounter that will affect everyone. Matt Davis also stars. Wendey Stanzler directed the episode written by Brian Young (#304).

“The show, at its core, is about family. It’s about the love of family.” Julie Plec

As we all look forward to the Season 3 Premier of “The Vampire Diaries” this Thursday, September 15, I think it is appropriate to reflect back on the last time we saw the inhabitants of Mystic Falls, VA.

The final episode of Season 2 was about choices, which I’ve summarized here:
• Elena chose to endure and to forgive.
• Caroline chose to persevere, and to risk rejection.
• Jeremy chose to stand up for himself.
• Bonnie chose risk because of love.
• Tyler chose to remain in Mystic Falls.
• Matt appears to have chosen isolation.
• Alaric chose to stand with his friends.
• Klaus chose to kill off his last family member and to enable Stefan’s dark side.
• Stefan chose to save his brother, at his own peril.
• Damon chose to face his past choices.

With each choice there are consequences. I am looking forward to seeing how the consequences of their choices play out for each character as Season 3 proceeds.

As we look forward to Season 3, I believe we will be exploring the theme of “Family” in much more detail. The Producers have hinted that we may meet the Original Family members. There has even been chatter on the web that there will be an appearance by Caroline Forbes’ father.

With this theme in mind, I have revised the TVD Family Tree and Timeline. I have removed the notes pertaining to the “Curse of the Sun and the Moon”, and I’ve added spots for the members of the Original Family. I will update the Tree with their names as they are introduced, as I have no doubt they will be.
I offer no speculation, although I am sure there are many who long for a love affair between Elena and Damon (I am betting on Damon’s honor and Elena’s fidelity), and also between Caroline and Tyler (I rather like the idea of two deadly enemies developing an intimacy despite the danger). I certainly want to see where the relationship between Bonnie and Jeremy will go, and how the “ghosts” of Vicki and Anna will impact it.

No matter what the third season of TVD brings, there is one thing I know for sure – it will be epic! Bring it on!
