Five Things About 2.01 – The Return

The Return was a great return for The Vampire Diaries. IF this episode set the tone for season 2, fans are in for a long and bumpy ride. Many things happened throughout the episode including things we didn’t even suspect to happen…or even this soon. This episode was jam packed with vampire goodness and it’s just the beginning of the season. Here are five things you should know about 2.01 – The Return.

1. Katherine is back and she’s ready to play. Nina Dobrev is the bomb.com for pulling off the innocent Elena and the cold-hearted Katherine. It is amazing seeing the transformation from one character to the next. It’s more than just a wardrobe change that really makes THE difference.

Katherine is back to break hearts a long the way. She enjoys toying with Stefan who actually let himself get sucked in to her power. It’s a very Stefan thing to want to play along to get the details, but this time he got wrapped up in Katherine’s allure.

And then there’s Damon. “Kiss me or kill me? We both know you can only do one.” She knows those boys so well and the fact that she could manipulate Damon the way she did with just a few minutes of conversation shows the girl definitely has skill.

2. Damon doesn’t like to be rejected. First Damon finds out that it wasn’t Elena that he kissed and then Elena throws a big landmine on him. “I’m not surprised that you would kiss me. I’m surprised you thought I would kiss you back.” This sends Damon into a downward spiral. He thinks Elena is lying to herself and he knows there is something between them. But we have to back up to Katherine. When he wants to know the truth if Katherine really loved him, she hits him with another landmine. She tells Damon that she never loved him and it was always Stefan! Fast Forward: Damon tries to kiss Elena again but she’s fighting him off and tells Damon that she cares about him, but she loves Stefan. It’s always been Stefan.

This causes Damon to act out and cross the line. He walks up to Jeremy who is coming to the defense of his sister and snaps his neck. Luckily, Jeremy is wearing that ring that protects again supernatural forces. Why did Damon have to do that? Did he realize it was going to ruin everything he had built with Elena? There could have been the possibility that Damon and Elena could exist in the world of The Vampire Diaries. But with that move, he destroyed it all. Stefan thinks Damon knew Jeremy was wearing the ring. There is no way Damon knew though. Damon participates in destructive behavior when he’s upset and drunk; he doesn’t really care about the consequences. Maybe I’m wrong, but Damon intended to cause pain to Elena and killing her brother was a way to do it. Thank goodness for those little black and silver rings!

3. The Lockwood Curse. Tyler is still reeling from the death of his father while everyone else in the town is trying to figure out why Mayor Lockwood and Tyler were stunned by the vampire device. Enter Mason Lockwood, he’s not so bad on the eyes. I’m sorry I had to say that because in the end it’s probably going to make his character more likable. This is just the first episode back so we really didn’t find out much about the Lockwood curse, but we do know it’s something that needs to be tamed. My prediction: The Lockwoods are going to be a major part of season 2 and there is probably a Katherine connection here.

4. Character changes. Did you see Stefan slap Jeremy around like a rag doll? Did you see that mean look in Bonnie’s eyes? The acting has definitely stepped it up a notch this season and it’s great to see. Elena had to stop Stefan from crossing the line with Jeremy. He threatened Uncle John in the hospital with turning him into a vampire if he didn’t leave. And Katherine even noticed how Stefan was meaner since the last time she saw him. Will Stefan’s aggression play a big part in this season? And will it drive Elena and Stefan apart or bring them closer together?

Bonnie was ready to play this episode. She didn’t back down and really showed herself as a force in Mystic Falls. She used her powers to take on Damon and tried again on Katherine. It was kind of funny how Katherine fake reacted to Bonnie’s power and then popped right out of it. BUT Bonnie did use her power to open the door so she wouldn’t be alone. Bonnie is smart on her toes and is ready to rid Mystic Falls of the vampires.

5. Caroline is going vamp! This was the biggest shocker of the entire episode. Not something that was expected, especially in the first episode out of the gate. Caroline is a pawn in Katherine’s game. Katherine suffocates Caroline with a pillow in the hospital and Caroline dies with Damon’s blood in her system. Damon offered to share some of his blood to help her survive the accident. So now Caroline has gone vamp so what does that mean for her and Bonnie’s relationship? Will Bonnie end up killing Caroline? How will Caroline adjust to being a vampire and most importantly, how is she going to make the transition into full vampiredom?

Matt just can’t get ahead in the Mystic Falls game because now Caroline has suffered the same fate as his sister! How will Caroline fit in to everyone’s life now?

Side note:
- Jeremy woke up and that’s good news. If anyone in the Gilbert family turns, it should be Elena! This was a good decision for the writers to have Jeremy wake up HEALED from Anna’s blood and not turned.
- It kind of bugged me that people couldn’t recognize a difference in Elena. Everyone kept mistaken her for Katherine (and I know they weren’t looking for a different person) but someone commenting on her edgy clothing or the curly hair would have been a little funny.

Sky Ferreira’s “Obsession” is the ST’s focus track;

Season two of The CW’s hit teen vamp show premieres today, September 9th

(New York, NY) – Original Television Soundtrack: The Vampire Diaries serves up a biting mix of exclusive tracks unavailable elsewhere—including songs by Smashing Pumpkins and Gorillaz—plus favorites from season one of the hit TV show, including “Sleep Alone” by Bat for Lashes and “Running Up That Hill” by Placebo. The collection’s focus track is “Obsession” by 18-year-old Internet sensation Sky Ferreira, who’ll release her eagerly anticipated debut CD in early 2011.

The Original Television Soundtrack: The Vampire Diaries is out October 12, while the new season of the hit CW network show—about two vampire brothers obsessed with the same beautiful girl, who are battling to control the fate of an entire town—launches its second season today, September 9 (airing Thursdays at 8/7c). And The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season was released on Blu-ray™ and DVD on August 31. The Vampire Diaries’ first season premiere generated the largest audience in network history for a series debut with 5.7 million total viewers, and is The CW’s most-watched show. Based on the best-selling series of books by L.J. Smith, the show stars Nina Dobrev (“DeGrassi: The Next Generation”), Paul Wesley (“Fallen”) and Ian Somerhalder (“Lost”), Steven R. McQueen (“Everwood”), Sara Canning (“Smallville”), Katerina Graham (“17 Again”), Candice Accola (“Juno”), Zach Roerig (“Friday Night Lights”), Michael Trevino (“Cane”) and Matt Davis (“Legally Blonde, Blue Crush”). Executive produced by Kevin Williamson (“Dawson’s Creek,” Scream), Julie Plec (“Kyle XY”), Leslie Morgenstein (“Gossip Girl,” “Pretty Little Liars”) and Bob Levy (“Gossip Girl,” “Privileged”), the series is from Bonanza Productions Inc., Outerbanks Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.

Of the 16 songs on the album, all were heard in the first season of The Vampire Diaries or will be featured in Season 2. Like the hit show, the soundtrack also has a hip yet darkly compelling and sensuous vibe. From cool cover songs, including Placebo doing Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and Digital Daggers taking on Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels,” to the gorgeous vocals of “Sleep Alone” by Bat for Lashes to Sky Ferreira’s edgy dance-pop “Obsession,” The Original Television Soundtrack: The Vampire Diaries proves irresistible. “Obsession,” produced by Dave Tedder (OneRepublic, Beyoncé, Rihanna), is heard in the upcoming season of The Vampire Diaries, and is perfect for the show’s intense visuals and storylines, as Ferreira sings: “Here’s my confession, I don’t just want you to love me, I wanna be your obsession.” Ferreira, an LA-based Portuguese-American singer-songwriter and actress (Putty Hill), is currently working with Paul Epworth, Bloodshy & Avant, Dallas Austin and Linda Perry on her debut CD. “Obsession” The Original Television Soundtrack: The Vampire Diaries is Ferreira’s first international single release.

Top 10 Moments of The Vampire Diaries Season 1

September 9, 2010 by Angela
Filed under Blog, Commentary, Episodes, Features

Tonight is the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries season 2, but we must look back before we move forward. Yes, this should have been a podcast but last weekend was a holiday and we just didn’t get it out. So I’m taking it to the blog.

  1. Elena and Stefan fall for each other. It’s not that we didn’t expect this because it is a basis of the show.  But it’s one of the crucial things that happened in the first season.  Without this love story element, the world of Mystic Falls wouldn’t be quite so human.  Fans saw this develop from the beginning and watch Elena and Stefan go through many difficult times. But Elena handled the fact that her boyfriend is 162 year old vampire pretty well and led to some pretty steamy moments between them.  Stand out moment:  1.02 – The Night of The Comet. “I met a girl. We talked. It was epic.  And then the sun came up and reality set in. This is reality Elena.”
  2. Bob Mahoney/The CW

  3. Damon turns Vicki Donovan. Damon coming to town was also pretty important to the story of The Vampire Diaries, but that should just be something is understood. But the turning of Vicki Donovan was unexpected and opened up a new world to Elena, Matt and Jeremy (Matt and Jeremy really didn’t know what was going on though.) This was the fuel behind Jeremy’s need to find out the truth because something happened to Vicki and he just couldn’t remember.  Also, this was a very important step for Damon.  He turned Vicki but faced the consequences when she had to be killed.  Damon erased Jeremy’s memory of the entire incident and made his pain and suffering go away.  Could this have been the very first time when Damon really softened up toward Elena? Things were very different after this point.
  4. The opening of the tomb. Everyone expected Katherine to be in the tomb and Damon would be reunited with the love of his life.  Wasn’t it heart breaking when Damon was searching the tomb for her and she wasn’t there? His heart was broken. But the opening of the tomb was much more than that.  This introduced new vampires into the town to cause problems and ignited the rage Bonnie had inside of her.  Grams died trying to help Stefan and Damon out and Bonnie didn’t quite know how to handle her pain which she later took out on Elena.  This also showed us another side of Anna because she just wanted her mom out so they could live a happy life together.
  5. Quantrell Colbert/The CW

  6. Elena finds out she was adopted. After having her special moment with Stefan, Elena finds a picture of Katherine who is definitely her twin.  Elena doesn’t understand and runs off with Damon, only to return home to the truth. Elena looks like Katherine because she was adopted.  She later finds out that Alaric’s wife was her birth mother…and Damon was the one who turned Isobel. We also find out that Stefan saved Elena from the car accident that her parents died in, so he knew her before he “knew” her.  Talk about plot twists.
  7. Matt and Caroline.  During a first watch of the season it’s kind of hard to see where they fit, together or apart.  But they bring something special to the world of Mystic Falls, just like Aunt Jeanna. These characters live in Mystic Falls and are surrounded by this supernatural stuff going around them and they are even effected by it, but they just don’t know.  That’s the thing that makes them interesting.  Plus, they are super cute together.  There relationship may not advance the storyline much, but they are there as “sign posts” to let us know that this world they live in very much real and they are normal people just like us.
  8. Quantrell Colbert/The CW

  9. Jeremy and Anna fall…in love. Anna knows the danger of a vampire falling for a human, it never ends well. After all, that is how Katherine got all of the vampires rounded up and trapped in the tomb, right? At first fans thought nothing was there, she was there to get the journals to find out how the break the spell on the tomb.  But after mission was accomplished, Anna let her heart open only to find out that Jeremy still was longing to be with Vicki.  Jeremy wanted to be turned which Anna thought was for love for her, but Jeremy had uncovered the truth about Vicki.  But when Jeremy finally realized he had feelings for Anna, it was too late because his Uncle John had already staked her to death.  But Anna left some of her blood for Jeremy and he decides he wants to turn himself.  Which is hopefully where season 2 will pick up at, did he or didn’t he?
  10. Alaric and Damon face off. Damon sensed the newcomer to town was more than what he said he was.  Damon thought after admitting that he killed Alaric’s wife, he could take care of him also and then the situation would be over it.  But now, Isobel left Alaric one of those special rings that won’t let him be hurt by “the things that go bump in the night”.  Damon killed Alaric, but when Stefan went to clean up the mess, Alaric came back to life, surprising them all.  After much suspicion, it was confirmed that Alaric wasn’t a vampire, just protected by his true love.  This opened the door for Alaric and Damon to team up to do some vampire hunting and start a bromance.
  11. Stefan loses control. When Stefan was down, Elena brought him back up by giving him some of her blood.  Obviously it was too much for him to handle because he lost control.  Stefan needed human blood and would do anything for it, including robbing a blood bank.  And that tipped the powers that be off that there was a vampire problem.  Stefan says he has things under control, but his actions are saying something different.  The out of control freak out also opened the door for some Elena and Damon action.  Hello, 1.19 – Miss Mystic Falls, did you see that dance?  Elena and Damon team up to help Stefan, but will he ever be able to go back to what he was before?
  12. Quantrell Colbert/The CW

  13. Damon falls for Elena. Did you ever think that Damon’s heart would melt for anyone besides Katherine?  Elena has a way of making Damon do the right thing, which is kind of refreshing.  Isobel busted the top on his little secret and he really didn’t deny his feelings for Elena.  Instead, he used his feelings as bait to drive Stefan crazy.  Stefan doesn’t want to have a repeat of the whole Katherine situation which leads us to….
  14. Founder’s Day. So many things happened, Mayor Lockwood was exposed as a vampire, even though he’s not.  He’s just got those special forces of a vampire, but we all know the Lockwood’s are werewolves. Anna and Damon are captured by Uncle John and burned in the basement.  But Damon makes it out alive because Bonnie helps Elena and Stefan by taming the fire just long enough to get Damon out.  But it’s not without warning because Bonnie says that if vampires cause any more problems in Mystic Falls, they will all be killed.  Most importantly, Elena and Damon kiss…or so we thought.  Katherine is back and she’s pretending to be Elena.  Damon is happy because he feels like Elena and him are finally on the same page, but it’s revealed to the audience that Elena is really Katherine when she goes crazy with the knives in the kitchen and chops off Uncle John’s fingers and gets him in the gut. Meanwhile, Jeremy is upstairs killing himself with a bottle of pills, hoping to change to escape the pain of life.

Would Elena Kiss Damon Back?

August 25, 2010 by Angela
Filed under Blog, Commentary, Features, News

Season one of The Vampire Diaries was filled with good and bad vampires, witches, clashes and of course love. Fans watched as Damon started to develop feelings for Elena as Elena’s relationship grew stronger with Stefan. Stefan stumbled along the way which could have opened the door for Damon to step in, but Elena’s feelings for Stefan stayed strong. But what if things were different, would Elena kiss Damon back? Nina Dobrev spoke with Carina Adly MacKenzie of Zap2it about the situation.

“I mean, I’m sure Elena has had dreams about Damon,” Dobrev says. “I’m not sure if she was put in the position to kiss him what she would do. I feel like she has high morals, and she loves Stefan (Paul Wesley). It’s always been Stefan.”

Nina also says that thinks between Elena and Damon will stay strictly friendly. Elena does care about him and is concerned about what will happen to him, but she loves Stefan and “she wants to make that work.”
