DAMON MAKES A DANGEROUS ENEMY — Stefan (Paul Wesley) takes drastic measures to find out the real reason Katherine (Nina Dobrev) has returned to Mystic Falls, and is shocked when she reveals new secrets about what really happened in 1864. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries a new tactic to resolve his issues with Mason, (guest star Taylor Kinney)…. but it proves costly. Tyler (Michael Trevino) pushes Mason to tell him the truth about the Lockwoods. Finally, when Katherine delivers an ultimatum, Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are left with very few options. Sara Canning, Candice Accola, Zach Roerig and Matt Davis also star. Rob Hardy directed the episode written by Caroline Dries (#204).

    2.02 – Brave New World – Synopsis

    THE CARNIVAL FROM HELL — When a confused and desperate Caroline (Candice Accola) leaves the hospital and joins her friends at the Mystic Falls Carnival, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) wants to take immediate action, but Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) come to Caroline’s defense. Matt (Zach Roerig) is completely mystified by Caroline’s behavior, but still tries to tell her about his feelings for her. Damon has suspicions about Tyler’s Uncle Mason (guest star Taylor Kinney) and uses Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) volatile personality in an attempt to get Mason to reveal his secret.     KATHERINE HAS RETURNED WITH A VENGEANCE — Picking up on the same night as last season’s finale, Elena (Nina Dobrev) arrives home to a nightmare as she discovers Uncle John’s and Jeremy’s fate. At the hospital, Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) is comforted by Matt (Zach Roering), Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) while she waits to hear if Caroline (Candice Accola) will survive the car accident. After a confusing conversation with Elena about the night’s events, Damon is the first to realize that Katherine (also played by Nina Dobrev) has returned. Katherine’s arrival sends Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon on a path to find out what she wants, why she’s back, and how much of a threat she is to the people they love. Meanwhile, still reeling from his father’s death, Tyler (Michael Trevino) is surprised when his charming and mysterious uncle, Mason Lockwood (guest star Taylor Kinney, “Trauma”), arrives to console the family.

    FOUNDER’S DAY TURNS DEADLY — Founder’s Day has finally arrived, and everyone is busy with last-minute preparations for floats and fireworks. Stefan (Paul Wesley) is uncomfortable with Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) new attitude toward Elena (Nina Dobrev), but Elena is more concerned about repairing her relationship with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Jeremy is worried about Anna (guest star Malese Jow), but not sure he’s on board with her latest plan for the future. While Caroline (Candice Accola) is enjoying her day as Queen of the celebration, she also tries to help Matt (Zach Roerig) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) get their friendship back on track. Finally, although Damon and Alaric (Matt Davis) do their best to stop him, Johnathan Gilbert (guest star David Anders) sets a plan in motion that brings Founder’s Day to an end amid chaos, destruction and death.     ISOBEL RETURNS TO MYSTIC FALLS — Isobel (guest star Mia Kirshner) returns to town and stuns Alaric (Matt Davis) with her attitude and her demands that he arrange a meeting with Elena (Nina Dobrev.) When mother and daughter finally meet, Isobel refuses to answer most of Elena’s questions, but reveals that she will stop at nothing to find the mysterious invention Johnathan Gilbert has been searching for. Isobel’s dangerous actions lead Stefan (Paul Wesley), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) to step in and help Elena deal with the situation. Candice Accola, Steven R.
