I Still Have You – Recap

by Cathy on May 6, 2011

Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Damon made Elena drink his blood so he wouldn’t lose her, Tyler came back home and fell in Klaus’ trap, Stefan and Elena had a talk about becoming a vampire, Jenna was turned into a vampire, and Damon got bitten by Tyler.

This week episode, The Sun Also Rises, is about the sacrifice ritual and the aftermath of it.

Jenna’s Transformation:
Elena tries to save Jenna, but Greta stops her with a spell. Jenna doesn’t know what’s going on at first until Elena tells her that she’s in transformation. Greta offers her blood to Jenna, so she can complete her transformation. Elena tries to stop Jenna from feeding, but Jenna’s vampire instincts take over and she feeds on Greta.

The Return of Bonnie and Jeremy:
Finally! These two have been MIA for the past two episodes. They’ve been locked up in that Mansion for a long time reading Grimoires. I felt like Bonnie and Jeremy have been kept out of the loop and they were told about the situation a little too late.

The Other Love Triangle:
I have to give it up for Caroline for being such a loyal friend. Even when Tyler is in his wolf form and trying to attack her, she never lose faith in him. She risks her life, trying to protect him. Matt, on the other hand, acts like any normal teenage boy would. I can’t blame him for shooting Tyler because he was protecting Caroline and himself. I also can’t blame him for breaking up with Caroline, even though it breaks my heart. One of the good things from tonight episode is the rekindling of friendship between Caroline and Tyler.

Operation Keep Elena Human:
Bonnie and Jeremy read somewhere in the Grimoires that Emily Bennett cast a resuscitation spell in 1864 and Jonathan Gilbert knew about it. Jeremy asks Uncle John to bring all the Gilbert Journals to find out what really happened.

It turns out that, there is a way. If a parent is willing to die for his or her child, the child can be saved. It’s like switching souls. John agrees to do it. Bonnie puts a spell on John before she leaves with Elijah and Damon to kill Klaus.

Stefan’s Sacrifice:
When Stefan finds out from Damon that Jenna’s been taken, he decides to do what he does best. Self-sacrifice. He offers to take Jenna’s place, but Klaus has already made his mind. He chose Jenna and she would be the vampire that he will sacrifice to break the curse.

Elijah’s Revenge:
There is a reason why Elijah wants to kill Klaus. It is not just because if the curse is broken, Klaus would become the deadliest hybrid. It’s because Klaus has took every single one of Elijah’s family and killed them. This is the reason why Elijah wants to kill Klaus. Stefan questions Elijah whether or not he can actually go through with killing his brother. Elijah tells him that Stefan has his words he will kill Klaus.

Breaking the Curse:
Greta puts the three ingredients: the doppleganger, the vampire, and the werewolf in the middle of the field surrounded by fire. Can I just say that I am so grateful Tyler isn’t the werewolf they have? I never liked Jules.

First, Greta breaks the moonstone that is binding the curse. After that, Klaus sacrifice a werewolf by ripping out Jules’ heart. I kind of feel bad for her but if a werewolf had to die, it’s better she than Tyler.

Because Stefan offers to take Jenna’s place, Klaus makes Elena choose between Jenna and Stefan. Elena refuses to, and Klaus puts a stake into Stefan’s back to weaken him. Then, he turns to Jenna but Jenna ran and bit Greta’s neck. She wasn’t fast enough. Klaus catches her and put a stake through her heart. Even though I knew it had to happen, it still took me by surprise. I always liked Jenna, but knowing this show, no one is safe.

Klaus then, goes for Elena and drinks her blood until she dies. As soon as the doppleganger sacrifice is completed, Klaus’ transformation starts. Damon, Elijah and Bonnie get to the scene and Bonnie does her spell. When Klaus is weaken, Elijah shoves his hand inside Klaus’ chest to grab his heart. This is when Klaus chooses to tell Elijah that he didn’t kill the family and that if Elijah kills him, he would never know where to find them. Of course Elijah caves and ran from the scene with Klaus.

The Aftermath:

  • Elena comes back to life and as soon as she does, John dies.
  • Jeremy and Elena are left with no parent. The only parental figure they have left in their lives is Alaric.
  • John left his Gilbert Ring for Elena.
  • Damon finally tells Stefan about his werewolf bite.

This is such a tragic episode. I’m really going to miss Jenna. Next week is the season finale. What’s going to happen to Damon? I really hope they don’t leave Damon’s fate as a cliffhanger.

You’re As Good As Dead – Recap

by Cathy on April 29, 2011

Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Klaus Elijah came back to life, Elena formed a new alliance with Elijah, we learned that Elijah and Klaus are brothers, the sun and the moon curse doesn’t exist, Klaus is a half vampire half werewolf, and the real curse he’s trying to break is the curse that was put on him.

This week episode, The Last Day, is about the events that leading up to the sacrifice ritual that Klaus has been waiting for a thousand year.

Elijah’s plan:
In the last episode, we learned from Elijah that he had found a way to save the doppleganger after the sacrifice. He had wanted to save Katherine 500 years ago, but Katherine fled and turned herself into a vampire before the sacrifice could happen. Elijah’s plan is to use a potion that has mystical powers of resuscitation on Elena. During Full Moon, the witch will channel the power of the moon to break the curse that binds in the moonstone. Klaus will then sacrifice a vampire and a werewolf. As a final part of the sacrifice, Klaus will drink the blood of the doppleganger until the point of her death. But, if Elena had drank the potion from Elijah, she can come back to life.

Of course, there are risks to that. Elijah doesn’t know for sure that the potion would work. There is a chance that Elena can really die.

The Gilbert Ring:
The Gilbert ring protects human from being killed by a supernatural being. Damon suggests that Elena wear the Gilbert ring before the sacrifice, so she can really come back to life. We know the Gilbert ring works. It’s fool proof. But, Elijah points out that dopplegangers are a supernatural occurrence, so it’s very possible that the ring won’t work on Elena. This concept is interesting to me. Elena is human. She’s one hundred percent human, but because she’s a doppleganger; it also makes her a supernatural being. It’s kind of like a hybrid in a way. Half human, half supernatural being. Is this the reason why a doppleganger is involved in the sacrifice to break the curse on Klaus?

Tyler’s Return:
Klaus’s Man Witch makes Mrs. Lockwood calls Tyler and tell him to come home. She tells him that she was in a hospital. Man Witch attacks Mrs. Lockwood and she really ends up in the hospital. Tyler does come home to see his mother and falls right in the trap Klaus set up for him.

Damon’s Screw-Up:
There is a sweet moment between Damon and Elena when he tells her that he can’t lose her. The moment was short lived when Damon acts on his impulse and fed his blood to Elena. This is an impulsive decision on Damon’s part and he’s being completely selfish, but I know that he truly believes this was the only way to keep her alive. He loves Elena so much that he would do anything to keep her, even if it means that she’d be a vampire.

Damon then realizes that he screwed up, so he tries to fix it. He asks Klaus if he’s willing to postpone the ritual until the next full moon. Klaus refuses and warns Damon not to screw it up for him. Of course, Damon being Damon plans to take Klaus’ werewolf out of the equation, so the ritual couldn’t happen tonight. Again, Damon’s risking his life to protect the love of his life.

A Vampire and A Werewolf:
Klaus’ vampire and werewolf he’s planning to use are Caroline and Tyler. Man Witch attacks Caroline and Tyler outside the hospital and brings them to the tomb. While they are both in the tomb, Caroline and Tyler get a chance to catch up and forgive each other.

The Talk:
Normal teenage couples have “the talk” about sex. Stefan and Elena on the other hand, have “the talk” about becoming a vampire. Stefan takes Elena on a hiking trip and it gives Elena a chance to ask questions to Stefan about the good and bad things about becoming a vampire. Once they get to the top of a mountain, Elena finally admits to Stefan that she doesn’t want to become a vampire. She wants to grow old, have a life, and have choices. I’m glad to hear Elena says these things. This is how the normal seventeen year old girl should feel.

Matt, The Hero:
Matt saves Damon’s life in this episode. If it wasn’t for him, Man Witch could have killed Damon when Damon tries to save Caroline and Damon. It looks like Matt isn’t working with Sheriff Forbes anymore. He’s started to see that even though Caroline is a vampire, she’s still Caroline. I think Matt is definitely coming around to the idea of dating a vampire. I really hope so because they are so cute together.

OMG Moments:

  • Damon gets bitten by Tyler. This is what I was afraid of since Rose got bitten by Jules. I was afraid Damon would be next. But, Tyler wasn’t fully transformed yet when he bit Damon so is it really fatal? Maybe Bonnie can do a spell to cure Damon.
  • Klaus makes Katherine calls Jenna to lure her out and he turns Jenna into a vampire. Why Jenna? Is it because Alaric invited Damon into the house? Is it Klaus’ revenge on Alaric?

This is a bad cliffhanger. I cannot wait until next Thursday. Jenna’s fate is hanging by the threat; along with Elena’s, Damon’s, and Tyler’s.

NEVER IS A VERY LONG TIME — Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to prevent Elena (Nina Dobrev) from being a victim of Klaus’ (guest star Joseph Morgan) plan to break the curse. Damon’s actions put him at terrible odds with Stefan (Paul Wesley) and the tension that started brewing between the brothers over their differing opinions of how to help save Elena’s life blows up into full-scale conflict. Tyler (Michael Trevino) returns to Mystic Falls after receiving a disturbing phone call. With the full moon marking the arrival of the sacrifice ritual, Stefan and Elena spend a romantic day together — afraid it might be their last. Sara Canning, Candice Accola, Zach Roerig and Matt Davis also star. J. Miller Tobin directed the episode written by Andrew Chambliss & Brian Young (#220).

It’s only been 6 weeks since the last new episode of TVD, and I am already having anxiety attacks at the thought of having to wait until fall for Season 3!

By now, I hope you have reviewed the “TVD Family Tree and Timeline” and have a copy so you can follow along as we return to Mystic Falls tomorrow evening.   As the remaining episodes unfold over the next 6 weeks, there will be revisions when new information is revealed.

Here is where we left the residents and guests of Mystic Falls last time we saw them:

  • Damon   – distracting himself with Andie Starr, still in love with Elena, getting along well with Stefan, and making an attempt to stay one step ahead of Katherine – it looks like Damon knows where the witches burial ground is, and Katherine doesn’t.  Maybe – maybe not.

  • Katherine – she claims she is here to help, but she lies like a rug.  I’d like to believe that future episodes will reveal what drives her, but honestly, I think she’s just a selfish bitch – always has been, always will be.

  • Stefan and Elena – in love with each other as ever, and both willing to sacrifice themselves for the people they love – Stefan for Elena, Elena for nearly everyone.  Will they both survive?

  • Caroline and Matt – Caroline revealed her true nature to Matt in order to save his life – now Matt’s freaking out.  Will Caroline compel Matt to forget what he’s seen, or will he accept Caroline as a vampire?

  • Bonnie and Jeremy – Bonnie has gotten her powers back – and apparently information on how to kill Klaus.  Will her power be enough to help her friends? Will Jeremy get in the way of her using it?

  • Jenna and Alaric – Looks like Aunt Jenna’s world is about to be blown wide open – again.  It’s not enough that she was suddenly recruited to be the parent of two teenagers when her sister died – now she’s going to have to deal with Elena’s birth mother, who also happens to be a vampire.  Is the clueless Jenna about to have the whole truth revealed to her?  Will Alaric – who gave his ring to John Gilbert – be around to protect her? Or will he need to sacrifice his life to save hers?

  • John Gilbert and Isobel Saltzman – my first prediction is that these two will not make it to Season 3.   John may have gotten his ring back, but I am not convinced that it is quite the same ring.  And Katherine herself says to Isobel “You’re being here changes everything.”  Yes, it does.  We need a vampire to break the curse, right?  And isn’t Isobel a vampire?  Frankly, I’m betting that this means Caroline is off the hook!

  • Tyler – Tyler is currently out of town.  But when he returns, I am betting he will bring with him an interesting aspect of Lockwood Lycanthropy.  I’m betting that Tyler is an “alpha male” – a wolf who retains human reasoning ability when changed.  That’s why Jules was so hot to get him back to Florida with her.

Apparently, it runs in the family.

Alaric to Mayor Lockwood in “The Turning Point” (1.10)   ”No, you look like a full-grown alpha male douche bag.”

Fasten your seatbelts everyone – the fun is about to begin again!

I said a few posts back that The Vampire Diaries is so rich and complex with characters and plot that my head was aching and I decided that I could only keep it all straight with a “road-map”.

Introducing “The Vampire Diaries Family Tree and Timeline” (click to enlarge).

Credit: Bonnie @ biteonthis.net

The original was done in pencil, and when I showed it to a few of my TVD buds, they loved it and asked for copies.  So I decided to create it in Visio so I could share it online.   Then I asked BOT if we could post it on the blog and here it is as a pdf file.  I hope you enjoy it.

I’d love feedback on this, especially if you have ideas to improve/expand it (this will probably be necessary as the show proceeds) and if you would like to add information that I may have missed.

I have already thought it might be better in two parts – the boxes with the “people” on the first page to show the families and the timeline, and the “tidbits” for each on a second page.

In any case, there will definitely be future editions.

Please let me know what you think.  I am really looking forward to your comments.  Thanks!

If you share, please credit Bonnie at biteonthis.net!

A NIGHT OF CONFESSIONS — Katherine’s (Nina Dobrev) mind games are getting on everyone’s nerves, but Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) realize that her knowledge of Mystic Falls history will help them stay alive. Frustrated with her relationship with Matt (Zach Roerig), Caroline (Candice Accola) finds a new way to get his attention. Alaric (Matt Davis) makes a surprising confession to Jenna (Sara Canning), and Katherine makes a different kind of confession to Damon. Stefan and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) try to convince Jonas (guest star Randy Goodwin) and Luka (guest star Bryton James) that they should all be working together, but Jonas’ lack of trust leads to a violent and fiery confrontation. Steven R. McQueen also stars. Michael Katleman directed the episode written by Caroline Dries (#216).

Jules is onto the vampires of Mystic Falls, she knows Mason didn’t disappear. Whether she knows for sure or not that Damon is the culprit of Mason’s death (or that he’s dead for that matter) isn’t exactly clear, but she does know Tyler is close to Caroline and it seem like she’s going to do whatever she can to stop it from continuing.

It’s pretty apparent that Jules hates Damon and all the other vampires and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to say the reason is probably the age-old vampire vs. werewolf rivalry. She may indeed suspect that Caroline killed Mason, but she’s met and had a few… “altercations” with Damon, and the mischief in his eyes could tip off any werewolf as to who is behind the demise of our dear old Mason.  But doesn’t it seem particularly cruel for her to try and turn Tyler against his vampire crush?  Jules may not have known that Tyler felt that way for Caroline, but when she throws Caroline under the bus, Tyler’s reaction is a dead giveaway which causes Jules to pour salt on the wound, accusing her for the death of his Uncle Mason. The werewolf vs. vampire rivalry is obviously a fight for dominance over the other, and the old “keep your friends close, enemies closer,” saying will probably not apply when one’s bite is fatal to the other, but it seems to me like Jules (and maybe the other vampires) are definitely not too happy about Tyler’s (and if aware of the past, all the Lockwoods) association with vampires, making this situation a little more than just power in numbers.

The motives behind Jules’s accusations seem pretty clear: get Tyler’s loyalty to “Team Werewolf” when Mystic Falls becomes the unfortunate setting to the impending “Fang Vs. Claw” battle of 2011. There can be several outcomes to Jules’s conversation with Tyler however, and they may not all be to her liking. Tyler is going to confront Caroline one way or another and it can either result in a) Caroline using her feminine whiles to convince Tyler that Jules is a manipulative witch (for lack of a better alternate of the insult… No offense, Bonnie), b) Caroline and Tyler end their friendship with Tyler storming off in a rage to join the werewolf alliance, or c) Caroline is completely up front with Tyler, making their friendship a little stronger and leaving Tyler on un-steady ground as to whose side he will choose.

So where does this leave poor Matt? As one of the only main characters that is still unaware of the supernatural goings-on in “fair Mystic Falls, where we lay our scene…” does this make him Paris to Caroline and Tyler’s Romeo and Juliet, or is our Juliet more fond of her old flame? I feel a whole other complicated love triangle is being thrown in the mix with Stephan+Elena+Damon and Jeremy+Bonnie+Luca… The question remains: Can these two star-crossed… friends? Lovers? Mythical beings make their relationship survive the “ancient grudge” that is bound to “break to new mutiny?”

While some Vampire Diaries fans may see Matt as an insignificant character, but there can be so much more to his character.  Here are three reasons why Matt adds so much more to Mystic Falls!

1. Elena’s other suitor: The chances of Elena breaking up with Stefan may be slim, and sure some of us fan may want to see Elena give Damon a chance, but Matt will always be Elena’s potential suitor for a normal life. Elena currently loves Stefan, but with that comes consequences: risking her life, being caught up in lies, she grows older while Stefan doesn’t, no possibility of children, etc. With Matt, she could have a more carefree life, get married, have children, and grow old with somebody. Matt gives her the choice between a life of the supernatural, and a life of normalcy.

2. Innocence in Mystic Falls: As the show progresses, characters of the show either a.) learn that they have (or obtain) some supernatural ability, or b.) find out that someone else has a supernatural ability. Matt is one of the few supporting characters that is completely in the dark about what is going on in Mystic Falls. While that may not seem as exciting as Bonnie casting a spell, or Tyler finding out that he has a werewolf gene, Matt gives us the untainted perspective which also shows us the perspective of all the other Mystic Falls residents that we never see.

3. Optimism: Many characters on the Vampire Diaries have had horrible luck or terrible things happen to them, but I don’t think any of them come close to Matt. His mom is never home (and when she is, she is hooking up with his friends), his sister was missing and is now deceased, he works to support himself while still in high school, he had Elena and now he doesn’t, and he had Caroline and then she let him go. Poor Matt! However, through it all, he always sees light at the end of the tunnel. He is genuinely the sweetest, most caring character on the show which is nice to see amongst all the idiotic things that other characters do when something bad happens to them or they don’t get their way. They could learn a thing or two from Matt!
