Mason Lockwood

I know it’s only October, and last night’s episode of TVD was a Halloween special, but to me it felt like a Valentine.

According to a tweet from Julie Plec, “Ghost World” was a gift to viewers.  And it was very, very special.

I know that today’s technology – social media in particular – makes it possible for fans and producers/directors/writers/actors to interact in a new, immediate and powerful way.  But there is nothing compelling (no pun intended) the creators of TVD – or any show – to act on fan
feedback.  The fact that they did shows just how much they appreciate the fans, and who doesn’t love that?

Moreover, TVD is some of the best television ever, with its rich characters and complex plot-lines.  Yet these people took the time to weave into this incredible tapestry some of the most beloved former characters in a way that closed out the past, included just about everyone (Tyler was the
notable absence last night), and not only did not destroy the integrity of the current story line – Klaus and the Original family – but enhanced it.

And because of that, I continue to be awestruck by the production, writing, and acting on this show.  That it doesn’t get recognition from The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences or SAG is criminal.  This show defines the term “ensemble”. But the acting and writing stand on
their own merits, individually as well as collectively.

In a season that has so far been marked by one standout episode after another, this one was particularly sweet.  And if you didn’t cry – at least once – you have my deepest sympathy.  This show is superior because of the way it makes the fans care about the characters. Their happiness – and their pain – is ours as well.

So what happened?  For me, it was a story of redemption and hope.

Vicki is gone.  But Anna is still there, and Mason has appeared.  And Mason appears to be out for revenge against Damon.  So Damon finds Bonnie and gives her an order – “fix it”.  Bonnie is concerned because if Mason is here, things are much worse than she imagined.  Vicki and Anna are bad enough, but just how many ghosts are there?

Her grimoire drops and falls open to a page with a manifestation spell to reveal “veiled matter”.  Say what?  In a word – ghosts.  Bonnie and
Caroline are off to the old witches house (the one where Bonnie brought Jeremy back to life) and Bonnie starts chanting the spell.

Suddenly, ghosts start to pop up everywhere.  And they are corporeal – they can touch people and people can see and feel them!

Lexi appears to Stefan, and she has one of the best moments of the night.  When Stefan is less than happy to see her, she cracks his head against the side window of an SUV and knocks him out!  Lexi was beloved for her spunk as much as her humanity.  She’s the kick-ass precursor
to our beloved Caroline!  She is there to help Elena get rid of the Ripper and get the “feeling” Stefan back.

Mason shows up at the bar next to Damon and Alaric – and Ric can see him! Mason is not there to mess with Damon – he just wants an apology, and to help.  He knows where there is information on how to kill Klaus, and that will free Tyler.  He even accepts the left-handed, half-assed apology that Damon offers up!  I always liked Mason.

Elena enters the restroom at the Grill and sees Jeremy – kissing Anna – she can see Anna!

And Sheila Bennett shows up in the abandoned house.  Grams!

Bonnie starts to cry but Grams tells her there is no time for that.  When Bonnie brought Jeremy back from the dead, she upset the balance of nature.  Grams is going to help her to get the balance back.

In an unexpectedly sweet moment, Caroline greeting Grams with “Hi Miss Shelia” and it had just the right touch of southern gentility and respect for her elders.  Anyone who is not in love with Caroline has a hard, hard heart.

Grams explains that the Original Witch gained a foothold into the human world when Bonnie opened the door for Jeremy to enter.  And then she used Vicki, knowing that Bonnie would send her back – which only opened the door wider.  Basically, anyone with unfinished business can come back now.  They need to destroy the OW’s talisman (the necklace) to send all the ghosts back and close the door between this world and the next.

It was very fitting that Grams was the one who got to explain what’s going on, including the information about the Original Witch, the necklace and the warning about staying out of Original Vampire business.   Jasmine Guy nails the part of Grams once again.  Sheila Bennett is the perfect combination of maturity, beauty, wisdom, compassion and love.  She is stern, but in a way that conveys love and concern.  It is why she is so beloved.

Caroline calls Elena and tells her that Bonnie needs the necklace – the OW is using it to draw power from the living.  Elena says she doesn’t have the necklace – Damon does.  Bonnie and Caroline are off to Casa Salvatore to look for it (even in the soap dish), but it’s not there.

Mason sets off on a hunt on the Lockwood property with Damon, looking for something that will help Tyler – information on how to kill Klaus.

Lexi gives Elena lessons on how to rid Stefan of his Ripper impulses and restore his humanity and emotions.  It’s basically a course in tough love.  Turns out that the necklace was a symbol of hope to Stefan in his darkest time.   (It’s perfect that a talisman that represents hope wound up with the character who, among all the characters in Mystic Falls, best represents hope.)

But not every ghost who has appeared is there to help someone.  Frederick and some of the tomb vampires appear in the square, ready to resume their vendetta against the founding families, and they start with a Fell – of course.  (Those Fells just can’t catch a break.)

And it turns out Anna, who really does love Jeremy, loves her mother too.  She took the necklace because she doesn’t want the door to close before she can find her mother.  And if she can’t find her mother, she wants Jeremy.  She doesn’t want to be alone.  She can’t quite believe that
there are people on the other side who have found peace because she hasn’t.

Elena tells her she is not being fair to Jeremy, but Anna knows that.  Jeremy tells her he believes there is peace on the other side, and she gives him the necklace.  He takes it to Bonnie (who –now that she knows about all the love between Anna and Jeremy – is really pissed.)

Bonnie takes the necklace, throws it into the fire – and starts to chant, and suddenly Grams is beside her, slipping her hand into
Bonnie’s hand and chanting along with her.  With a crack and a pop, the necklace disappears.

And suddenly, Damon is alone.  Mason is gone.

Mason provided one of the key moments of the night with his “revenge versus redemption” speech.  He understood he made bad choices in his
life, but they are over.  He wants to help Tyler.  His part in the story was the key to what is going to happen in the next episode, because he leads Damon to the location of information on Klaus and the originals – information that may provide a way to kill Klaus – and free Tyler from his grasp.

Lexi passes the “de-Rippify” torch to Elena, and she is gone.

Lexi got to offer Elena hope – that Stefan is still in there somewhere, regardless of what Klaus has done.  And now Elena knows how to knock the Ripper out of him, if she is so inclined.

Grams tells Bonnie “You’re stronger than all of this.  I’m proud of you.”  And she’s gone.

Bonnie finally gets closure with her Grams.  Sheila passed away unexpectedly in Season 1 and Bonnie spent a good deal of time away from
Mystic Falls mourning her loss.  Sheila is one of those earthy characters that ground everyone around her, and that her last words to Bonnie were words of encouragement felt so right – yes, it was one of the crying moments.)

Finally, the sweetest moment was with Anna.  As the ghosts disappear one by one, we see Pearl in the middle of the road.  (I’m getting teary-eyed thinking about it as I write this…)  Anna sees her and they run to each other, pure joy radiating from their faces.  And they disappear together, holding each other.  Best moment of the episode – in an episode that was full of best moments, as always.

But we’re not done yet.  Because this is- after all – The Vampire Diaries.

Ric has found his way to the Lockwood caves and Damon.  And discovers some interesting writing on the walls!

With a flash, crackle and pop, the necklace suddenly reappears on the hearth!   It would not make sense for something that represents hope to simply disappear.  Besides that, if you cheated (like I did, naturally) and saw the pictures of Original Mom wearing that necklace in next week’s
episode, you know it’s not really gone.

Looks like the Original Witch is one powerful Bitch!  She will not be stopped.  She must really hate Klaus.

(WARNING:  If you have not yet seen the promo for next week’s episode, you might not want to read further.  If you can’t stand the wait, carry on!)

Next week?  Well, it is impossible for me not to comment on next week’s eagerly anticipated episode about the Original Family back before they were vampires. When the short promo was posted, it wasn’t long before we had screen caps to show details of who we will see – some old
friends, some new.

And apparently, these people have a Viking heritage.  As usual, a hint of this was dropped in a past episode by Rebekah.  Everything on this show is done with deliberation.  Nothing is wasted. Rik tells us the writing on the walls of the cave is Viking script – and it includes the names of the Original Family members.

Original Mom, in episode stills, is wearing the necklace, so either she is the Original Witch (play on words?) OR she is wearing a gift from someone else.  While she may be a witch, I still think she’s a Petrova.  There are no Viking Petrova’s as far as I know.  Mikael may have picked
her up on a previous journey across the seas. And I don’t think she’s the Original Witch (mother’s don’t hate their children, no matter what they do)  - but I do think she’s the OW’s BFF.

It also looks like presumed youngest Original sib is dead (in Klaus’ arms).  We don’t know really if he’s the youngest sibling of the Original Family, or the child of one of the Original siblings.  We just know that he sure looks dead in Klaus’s arms.  Did Papa Werewolf and his clan
attack the Original Family Settlement?  Is Original Dad Mikael sword fighting with Original Werewolf Dad – or Klaus?

And I think I see a tree burning in the night sky?  The oak?

As usual, the anticipation is killing me.  Let the countdown begin.

I said a few posts back that The Vampire Diaries is so rich and complex with characters and plot that my head was aching and I decided that I could only keep it all straight with a “road-map”.

Introducing “The Vampire Diaries Family Tree and Timeline” (click to enlarge).

Credit: Bonnie @ biteonthis.net

The original was done in pencil, and when I showed it to a few of my TVD buds, they loved it and asked for copies.  So I decided to create it in Visio so I could share it online.   Then I asked BOT if we could post it on the blog and here it is as a pdf file.  I hope you enjoy it.

I’d love feedback on this, especially if you have ideas to improve/expand it (this will probably be necessary as the show proceeds) and if you would like to add information that I may have missed.

I have already thought it might be better in two parts – the boxes with the “people” on the first page to show the families and the timeline, and the “tidbits” for each on a second page.

In any case, there will definitely be future editions.

Please let me know what you think.  I am really looking forward to your comments.  Thanks!

If you share, please credit Bonnie at biteonthis.net!

Previously on the Vampire Diaries: we learned about Katherine’s family history and how Elena is connected to Katherine, Jeremy and Bonnie went on a date (kind of), Bonnie made a new friend, and the keys to lift the curse of the moonstone were revealed.

In this week episode, The Sacrifice, Elena does the best she can to stop her friends from saving her life. In true TVD fashion, this episode left me breathless and exhilarated. It definitely made up for the two week break.

Luka and Bonnie: channeling powers
Ok, I stand corrected. I said in my previous recap that Luka and Jonas are vampires. Well, I was wrong. Luka and Jonas are witches, or warlocks as they prefer to be called. In the beginning of the episode, Jonas got inside the Gilbert house and took a few of Elena’s personal things. That scene alone tells me that Jonas isn’t a vampire. He would have to be invited into the house, if he was.

At school, Luka showed Bonnie how to channel powers from other witches. Bonnie is not very settled when it comes to guys. It was obvious that she was completely taken by Luka. I just hope that Luka doesn’t turn out to be an evil warlock. After all, his dad is working with Elijah. For all we know, Luka can be Voldemort in the making.

Jeremy and Bonnie: no more romance
This is a bad week for Jeremy. He tried to do the right thing by helping Bonnie, but he ended up falling victim to Katherine. Thank goodness he’s wearing the Gilbert ring; otherwise, it would have been the end for Jeremy. Katherine could have easily killed him. Although he escaped from Katherine (thanks to Stefan), Bonnie broke his heart by telling him that nothing romantic is ever going to happen between them. “I can’t feel that way about you” were Bonnie’s exact words. Seriously Bonnie, why don’t you just kick a puppy when he’s down? Poor Jeremy… he just can’t catch a break. He fell in love for the first time with Vicki. She turned into a vampire and wanted to kill him. He fell for another girl, Anna. She turned out to be a vampire and was killed by his Uncle John. Jeremy started to fall for Bonnie and she turned him down. This kid needs a healthy relationship.

Tyler and Caroline: beginning of a beautiful friendship
Tyler and Caroline had bonded over the past couple of episodes. Tyler had no one to turn to and Caroline was there to help him through his transition. Caroline see herself in Tyler. She was alone when she first transitioned into a vampire. She didn’t have anyone to help her and she ended up killing someone. Then, Stefan helped her and she learned how to adjust. Stefan was there for her to guide her through when she was lost. Caroline wants to be that person for Tyler. She is Tyler’s Stefan Salvator. Caroline is risking her life by helping Tyler, but I like that she’s being selfless. Even though Caroline is a vampire, she still has her humanity. This is her humanity. I want to see this friendship between Tyler and Caroline to grow stronger. Wouldn’t it be great to have a werewolf on your side?

Operation Protect Elena:
Stefan and Damon have a plan. They both want to protect the woman that they love and they are willing to do whatever it takes. They covered all the bases. They went and talk to Katherine to try to get the moonstone. They asked Bonnie for help. The only thing they missed was how Elena feels about their plan. Elena doesn’t want to be saved. She’s not willing to risk the lives of people she loves for her safety. Elena would rather sacrifice herself. That’s one of the differences Elena has from Katherine. Katherine is selfish. Elena is selfless.

But in tonight episode, Elena’s selflessness did more harm than good. She thought she was protecting the people she loves by sacrificing herself. The truth is, if Elena didn’t go to Rose and ask her to take her to Slater’s apartment, Stefan wouldn’t be locked inside the tomb with Katherine. If Elena didn’t tell Alice to call Cody Weber (or whatever the guy’s name was) and tell him that the doppelganger is ready to surrender to Klaus, Rose wouldn’t have to call Damon for help. Damon wouldn’t have to leave his brother to come and save Elena. If Damon was at the tomb with Stefan and Bonnie, he wouldn’t have let Stefan ran inside the tomb to save Jeremy. Damon and Stefan would have put their heads together and come up with a plan to save Jeremy.

“Don’t try to be the hero. You’ll end up dead.” Katherine’s words echoed in my ears. She’s right. Look at Jeremy. He almost died in this episode because he tried to protect Bonnie. Stefan got locked inside the tomb because he saved Jeremy. Maybe that’s the reason why Katherine’s been around for a long time. Survival of the fittest. You have to be extremely selfish to stay alive.

Gold Star Moments:

  • Matt: You are breaking my heart, my dear. Why didn’t you just kiss Caroline before Tyler interrupted the moment? Now, assumptions are made and hopes are shattered. On a positive note, I am glad Matt is still alive.
  • Alaric and Jenna: Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Alaric and Jenna for their comic relief in this episode. We need to see more of these two. Hopefully in the later episodes, we will get to see their story developed.
  • Mason: I’m happy to see Mason back on the show, but it was excruciating to watch him go through his first transition. I fear for Tyler. Mason kept a journal. He wrote about his transition. Maybe Caroline and Tyler will find something in Mason’s journal that is going to reveal more secrets about the moonstone.

Now for the moments that didn’t really add up:

  • In the beginning of the episode, Jonas got inside the Gilbert house to take a few of Elena’s personal things. Why didn’t he just kidnap Elena and take her to Elijah? What was the point of stealing Elena’s personal things to find out where she was, when Jonas was inside the house and could have easily taken Elena with him?
  • Elijah spared Damon’s life and didn’t take Elena with him. He killed the other guys who knew about Elena, but he didn’t kill Damon. You would think that Elijah would want to kill Damon, since Damon tried to kill him. Later, Elijah told Jonas that he knows both of the brothers would die before they let anything happen to Elena. Elena would be protected if she’s with Damon and Stefan. Elena would be safe, and that’s where Elijah wants her to be. Elijah wants Elena to be in a safe place. He killed the others who knew about the doppelganger, so that the information cannot get back to Klaus. Elijah doesn’t want Klaus to know about Elena. What is Elijah up to? What is his motive? Is he good? Is he evil? Does he want to release the curse from the moonstone to no one needs to be sacrifice? If he does then, what are his reasons for wanting to do that?

So many questions! My brain is loaded with information that can’t easily be processed. I’ll be honest with you, I watched this episode twice before I started writing this recap. My brain is fried. Excuse me, I need to go watch some mindless television to remedy this condition. Before I go, here are a few things we can look forward to in the next week episode:

  • Tyler is going to transition into a werewolf.
  • Will Stefan get out of the tomb?
  • What’s going to happen between Stefan and Katherine, while they’re stuck in the tomb together?
  • What’s Elijah going to do next?
  • Will Caroline, Tyler, and Matt form a love triangle?

THE VAMPIRE DIARIESLove. It’s a silly little thing. It makes you feel like you are on top of the world… like you can do anything. Love makes you feel invincible. Love also makes you do stupid things. It makes you blind. Nothing else in the world matter as long as you are with the one you love. This notion of love had led many men to fall to their demise.

There have been a long list of men who had fallen in love with Katherine. All were brave and willing to die for her… for love. Their love for Katherine led them to their ultimate demise.

Trevor:
Trevor fell in love with a human Katerina back in 1490. Because he fell in love with Katherine, he helped her escape from Klaus. When you love someone, you would do anything to protect them. Trevor was willing to live for eternity, running for his life if it means that he gets to be with Katherine. Of course, Trevor didn’t get Katherine. Trevor got used by Katherine and he had to run and hide for over 500 years from Klaus. Trevor’s life eventually ended when Elijah ripped out his neck.

If Trevor wasn’t in love with Katherine, he wouldn’t have betrayed Klaus and the original vampires. Trevor wouldn’t have had to be on the run for 500 years. Trevor would still be alive.

Stefan & Damon:
The year was 1864. Katherine came to Mystic Falls. The two Salvatore brothers fell in love with Katherine. Katherine claims that she never loved Damon, and that Stefan is the person she truly loves. It didn’t matter though. Katherine was selfish and manipulative. Stefan and Damon risked their lives to save Katherine but she didn’t want to be saved. She wanted to fake her own death in order to escape from her past. Stefan and Damon died for love and had to “live” with the pain of a heartbreak for 145 years.

Mason:
Mason’s story is probably the saddest one out of all. Katherine used him like a dog (no pun intended). Katherine pretended to be in love with Mason, so she can get what she wants. What’s worst is that she was going to turn Mason into Klaus, and Mason was going to get sacrificed. Even in his last moment, Mason told Damon that he loves Katherine. Mason triggered his werewolf curse because of Katherine. Mason got his heart ripped out by Damon because of Katherine.

All these men ever did was love her, but Katherine only cares about her survival. That’s her justification for anything and everything that she has done in her lifetime. On behalf of Trevor, Damon, Stefan, and Mason: Katherine, I think we need to add a selfish-manipulative-bitch to the list of ingredients to sacrifice.

Dear Mason,

I get it. I know. You had to go. To be honest, you brought it on yourself. Shacking with Katherine? Ratting on Stefan and Damon? Threatening to snap Elena’s neck? What did you think? Damon would just let it slide? So I get it. You just needed to go. From the moment you told Sheriff Forbes about the Salvatore, we all knew you’re gone. And I know, after Damon was done with his poking and “I’ve been where you are” thing, you wanted to die.

You know, I hated you for a while. It was that love/hate thing most of us usually do with Damon. First there was love. When you came with your big truck and we were all so glad Tyler finally has someone to look up to. A cool guy, not a cold dictator like his father, who will help him get over that rage, kind of show him that he doesn’t have to be angry at the world and there is a way to keep it together even if you are that unfortunate to have some wolf gene you didn’t even ask for. And, honestly, I kind of thought that’s your purpose: explain the werewolf thing to Tyler, and after things heat up a little bit and clashing with Damon a few times, you will join “destroy Katherine” team.

Boy was I wrong! And with finding out how wrong I was, came hate. I’m glad Caroline kicked your but! You were such an idiot, ratting on the brothers and grabbing Elena!

I know you were in love. We’ve all been there, doing some stupid thing just because that special someone wants you too. And I know you didn’t trust her. But, did you really have to be that naïve? Did you really think it’s a coincidence Jimmy attacked you over nothing? Did you really think Kat will lift the curse with the moonstone? That was why she wanted it so much? I guess you didn’t, you wouldn’t hide the stone if you did. But still.

You should have known better. You should have thought of Tyler. You should have asked around. Find out why she doesn’t want you to mess with the Salvatore brothers. You should have done so many things. But you didn’t, and we are where we are.

Asking Jeremy to help Tyler and believing so hard Kat loved you, it was so sad to see. Or you just wanted to believe it, so you could believe she really will take the curse off. Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter now.

I’m sorry, Mason. I know Damon hurt you in more ways than one. I know he ripped your heart even before he actually ripped it physically. He was right, you know. She didn’t love you. You were doomed the minute you met Katherine Pierce. So, try not to haunt him, ok?

That guy who’s body you took, Kinney? He’s saying some “Mason might come back” and “you never know with the supernatural” things. But you’re not coming back, are you. Not even to help Tyler, or to haunt that backstabbing b**** Katherine. I’m sorry. We all are.

So, rest in peace, Mason Lockwood.

I’ll miss you.

We have seen the end of Mason Lockwood.  To some, it seems that Damon Salvatore killed Mason in order to protect Elena, or out of jealousy, revenge, or because of the natural antipathy between vampires and werewolves.  As Damon says to Jeremy “It’s kill or be killed.”

Consider, however, that while one or all of these may have been Damon’s initial motives, ultimately, Damon killed Mason as an act of mercy.

Vampires and werewolves are natural adversaries – a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire.  Damon and Mason have already taken shots at each other.  Now Damon’s mission is to find Katherine, learn why she has returned to Mystic Falls, and what she wants with the moonstone.   Once he has the information, Mason is history.

He captures and binds Mason, demonstrates that lack of cooperation will be unpleasant, and then begins the inquiry.

There is not much emotion behind the torture and inquisition – he’s just fact finding.

At first.

He wants to know where Katherine is, what she’s up to and what she wants with the moonstone.  Despite the prodding with a red hot poker, Mason is not forthcoming with any information.

Enter Jeremy with wolfsbane – a new torture tool.  A light application on Mason’s cheek demonstrates that this is a potent plant.

Again, Damon asks – “Where is Katherine? What does she want with the moonstone? What is she up to?  She can’t compel you because you’re supernatural– what is Katherine doing in Mystic Falls?”

Then Mason touches a nerve – “She’s with me – Jealous?”

We see this remark touches a nerve with Damon, and into Mason’s offensive mouth goes the wolfsbane.

And as he spits and coughs up the inside of his mouth and throat, Mason finally explains – Katherine wants the moonstone in order to lift Mason’s curse.  Damon is skeptical (naturally) – why would a vampire help a werewolf?

Mason – “Because she loves me.”

And with that revelation, everything changes.

Damon’s gut reaction reveals itself in his eyes.  Damon pities Mason – because he knows exactly how Mason feels – because Damon felt the same way once, about the very same woman.

He sees himself in Mason – a young man in love, and totally unaware that the woman he has fallen for is merely using him for her own selfish purposes.  Not only is she using him, she has no feelings for him at all.

Under the cynical, sarcastic personality of Damon Salvatore, there is the memory of a hopeful, innocent heart – a young man who was so enthralled with his first love that he let her turn him into a vampire.  He loved her so much he believed it when she told him she wanted to be with him forever.

The sting of Katherine’s betrayal and rejection are recent.   All those years of waiting for her – longing for her – are the basis for Damon’s cynicism and sarcasm.  He’s endured over one hundred and seventy years of emotional pain and longing, and damaged his relationship with his brother – only to be told it was all for nothing.  Katherine didn’t care – she could have come for him at any time, and she didn’t – because she didn’t care.

When Damon says to Mason “you’re stupid”, he is reflecting on himself as well (as in “How could I have been so stupid?”) and we know he’s been beating himself up over it since he learned the truth about Katherine.

Mason begs Jeremy not to let his curse happen to Tyler.  And we see the pain of the curse in Mason’s eyes and hear it in his voice.  And Damon tells Jeremy “He wants me to kill him – to release the curse”. And we know it’s true.

But what curse does Mason now want to be released from?  The curse of the werewolf?  Or the curse of loving a woman so seductive but so evil?

Then Damon reveals what we already know – that he sees himself in Mason.  Sure, he says it through the veil of his ever-present sarcasm, but he speaks the truth.  Then…

Mason  – “I love her”.

Damon – “I know”.

And he really does know.  Katherine was Damon’s first love – she is probably Mason’s first love too.

And Mason now knows that Katherine betrayed him and never intended to remove his curse – and Mason just can’t live with the curse.

In the end, Damon does what is merciful.  He puts an end to Mason’s pain.  The pain of the curse of the werewolf, and the pain of love’s betrayal.

And after he rips out Mason’s heart, Damon’s face does not reflect the look of one who has just vanquished a mortal enemy.  We see the resignation of having done what had to be done - and perhaps the wish that someone had been as merciful to him.

What’s The Deal With The Moonstone?

by Veronica on October 21, 2010

Screen Cap Credit: devotedtovampirediaries.com

A major dramatic part of this season so far has been the mysterious moonstone. Tyler had it, Mason wanted it, and now, as it turns out, Katherine came back to Mystic Falls just to get it back. But why is it important enough to her to come out of the woodwork after 145 years of pretending to be dead? As we saw in the 4th episode of the new season, Memory Lane, Katherine was willing to betray her entire family “without even blinking” over its secret… But is Katherine really that evil or is there something bigger at stake? Here are some possible theories:

Theory #1: The moonstone is a pseudo-full moon for the werewolves. The moonstone could contain some sort of supernatural force that controls the ability to let werewolves change at will. Like in other modern “vampires v. werewolves” shows and movies such as True Blood, Underworld, and Twilight, werewolves aren’t necessarily “servants of the moon” (2.03 – Bad Moon Rising) but can shape shift at will. And if the Mystic Falls vampires have the ability and magic aid to be able to walk in the daylight, who is to say that Mason (and possibly in the future Tyler) should have to wait around for the full moon to kick some serious butt?
Reasons why it could work: George wanted this moonstone pretty badly enough to form an alliance and agreement with his mortal enemy over it and having the ability to have the werewolf strength whenever you want it. That is definitely something any werewolf would be interested in.
Reasons why it probably won’t: Katherine is pretty selfish… (here is where you say “duh!”) Although, having a werewolf who can shape shift at will on your side would be an awesome advantage, Katherine stayed under the radar for too long and backstabbed her so called family for something that doesn’t involve something more major for her. This moonstone is too important to her not to effect the vampires in some way.

Theory #2: The moonstone is a form of guard against werewolf bites. The moonstone could make a vampire immune to a werewolf bite. This could explain Katherine’s obsession behind it and could explain why George wanted the stone. Another explanation why he took Katherine’s immunity to him away, he would have the ability to destroy her.
Reasons why it could work: That could make Katherine (and if she chooses to share with Stefan)the supernatural victor against the werewolves.
Reasons why it probably won’t: They wouldn’t bring up fatal werewolf bites if they had such a ready solution available so quickly. Besides, Katherine wouldn’t betray her identity just to be able to give the Lockwoods the advantage, when they could have easily destroyed her after the trade was made. Also, keeping in mind that Katherine mentioned in 2.04 -  Memory Lane that there were few werewolves left. She compelled Mason into spilling human blood to be able to set the curse in motion for him. It is pretty doubtful that Katherine is scared enough of a werewolf bite to go through all the trouble to protect herself from it.

Theory #3: He/She who possesses the moonstone, is in total control. The moonstone could give the holder the ultimate power over werewolves and vampires. Having similar power to the Gilbert device, it would explain why George and Katherine both wanted it so badly.
Reasons why it could work: The moonstone could very well give Katherine the one-up on not just the Lockwoods, but on EVERYBODY!!! And we thought Katherine was tough to beat before!
Reasons why it probably won’t: She would be utterly unstoppable. At least to the supernaturals on the show… but wouldn’t it a dramatic twist if the only person that could stop her was none other than Elena? The moonstone could give advantage to Katherine but it would be too much to say it would make her immune to wooden stakes through the heart as well.

There’s a lot to think about it. Guess we’ll just have to be patient (I could hear the groans already) to see what these brilliant TVD writers have in store for us and our friends in Mystic Falls.

Who is going to die? Vote In The Poll:

by Angela on October 13, 2010

According to reliable sources, The Vampire Diaries will be killing off one of its characters. And it won’t be the Jeremy-got-his-neck-snapped-but-was-wearing-a-magic-ring kind of death. This one will be for good. The character will be no more. And the actor will no longer be working on the show.

Source: Watch With Kristin

This doesn’t look good for the men of Mystic Falls. (Just going by context clues, ACTOR = male. But that could be totally wrong.) Someone is going to die, but who do you think it will be? Vote in the poll:

Which male of Mystic Falls will die soon?

  • Mason Lockwood (55%, 42 Votes)
  • Matt Donovan (26%, 20 Votes)
  • Other (10%, 8 Votes)
  • Tyler Lockwood (4%, 3 Votes)
  • Jeremy Gilbert (4%, 3 Votes)
  • Alaric Saltzman (1%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 77
