You should be dying — of excitement. Because as hinted in last night’s episode — and teased to Spoiler Room by Julie Plec — it’s on. “I have a feeling that Klaus ultimately is equally capable of indulging in love and sabotaging love, just like Damon is. But there is certainly going to be an object of his interest very soon,” she told us Wednesday night.

Anything about TVD‘s Stefan/Katherine? Thanks! — Rose
Though she’s currently on the down low, I’d expect to see Katherine very soon. “She’s gone underground, and so it will be a surprise when we see Katherine again. As Katherine tends to do, she’ll pop up sometime and throw everyone for a loop,” says Plec.

Yes, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Katherine (Nina Dobrev) do kiss in Thursday’s episode of The Vampire Diaries. While we won’t spoil Damon’s reaction to the smooch, we will say he won’t be gone from Mystic Falls for very long.

Ausiello: Klaus compels Stefan to completely shut off his emotions, thus paving the way for him to become an official baddie. That’s one of, like, four big twists in the episode, so fasten your seat belts.

Question: I wonder if you have any news on The Secret Circle, Glee, The Vampire Diaries or Nikita? —Luana
Ausiello: Eenie, meenie, miney… Vampire Diaries! Look for Matt’s issues with the supernatural world to come to a head in Episode 5, per exec producer Julie Plec. “It’s set the weekend before senior year begins and it’s senior prank night,” she previews. “And of course, things go horribly wrong. For Matt, specifically, it’s kind of bittersweet because there’s a sense of the life he’s lost over the two seasons of our show and it’s really hurting him. We get to explore that in a beautiful and tragic way.” Plec also confirms that “Matt’s gotta get laid this year. He just needs that. He needs love.”

Ohemgeeitscoley: anything for Damon and Elena on #tvd?
Want the good news, all you Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) lovers? They are totally hooking up! But the bad news is…I’m a very bad person for leading you on because they are hooking up in a strictly detective-like fashion to try to find Stefan (Paul Wesley). Wah-wah. Sad clown. From what I hear, the dealio is there won’t be any hot and heavy romance stuff in the first part of the season. But guess what? It doesn’t look like Stefan even wants to be found, and that may change things. I hear Stefan will be gone for something like the first half of the season…ish.

totallychristie: Caroline and Tyler! CAROLINE AND TYLER!
All caps means business! Well, you saw in the promo that Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Caroline (Candice Accola) are getting down to some sexy business. So, we just had to bug Candice about it! “Caroline definitely has scenes with Tyler in the season opener,” she says coyly. “I don’t know what kind of clothing they might be wearing. She also has scenes with Matt, so we don’t know. Ausiello: The question isn’t if Elena’s doppelganger will be back, it’s when. “We’re not going to see Katherine right away,” says VD EP Julie Plec. “But when she does show up, she’s not going to show up empty-handed. She’s going to show up with some pretty valuable information.”

Question: Desperate Vampire Diaries fan here! Can I have some “Forwood” scoop, please? —Jo
Ausiello: Elaborating on her Comic-Con tease that Caroline and Tyler would remain in an awkward friends zone in Season 3, Plec says, “The thing about the friends zone is, when there’s that much animalistic sexual tension that exists between two people, eventually the friends zone is going to have a mattress involved. I think we can safely say that sooner or later, Caroline and Tyler aren’t going to be able to avoid the fireworks that very clearly have been simmering between them all summer long.” Nowthat is a woman who knows how to craft a good sound bite. Well done, Plec. Well. Done.

NATALIE: The sexual tension between this werewolf-vampire pairing is about to bubble over. “There’s a lot brewing underneath that friendship that’s been simmering all summer,” executive producer Julie Plec tells us. “[We'll see] them deal with that and then maybe act on what’s been brewing. The Vampire Diaries absolutely rocked my world last night! PLEASE, I need some Stefan/Elena scoop. That phone call! How much longer are they going to be apart?! — Erika
First, do NOT get me started on that phone call. Absolutelydevastating. Now, for the possibly upsetting news, it sounds like they might be apart for a while. Paul Wesley opened up about it all at the CW premiere party this weekend, saying “I hate to be cheesy, but on a symbolic level, he’s really apart from everybody. He’s physically apart for a while, in a different location, but he’s in a completely different space,” he says. “He and Elena were just not what they were. It could go on indefinitely, man, for sure.” But will there come a point where he forgets about Elena? “I think at a certain point, he thinks he has. Whether or not he truly has is left to be seen to me. I think he thinks he has to because he forces himself to [forget her], and circumstances force it, too. Genuinely, they force him to.”

Anything on Vampire Diaries would make my morning!! PLEASE! — Dani
Paul Wesley can’t wait for you to see an upcoming episode that “shows a side of Stefan that we haven’t seen before.” “I think it was probably the most fun I had shooting Vampire Diariesperiod, in any episode,” he said. “It’s a scene where I’m basically saying goodbye to my old self.”

It’s only been 6 weeks since the last new episode of TVD, and I am already having anxiety attacks at the thought of having to wait until fall for Season 3! 

By now, I hope you have reviewed the “TVD Family Tree and Timeline” and have a copy so you can follow along as we return to Mystic Falls tomorrow evening.   As the remaining episodes unfold over the next 6 weeks, there will be revisions when new information is revealed.

Here is where we left the residents and guests of Mystic Falls last time we saw them:

• Damon   – distracting himself with Andie Starr, still in love with Elena, getting along well with Stefan, and making an attempt to stay one step ahead of Katherine – it looks like Damon knows where the witches burial ground is, and Katherine doesn’t.  Maybe – maybe not.

• Katherine – she claims she is here to help, but she lies like a rug.  I’d like to believe that future episodes will reveal what drives her, but honestly, I think she’s just a selfish bitch – always has been, always will be.

• Stefan and Elena – in love with each other as ever, and both willing to sacrifice themselves for the people they love – Stefan for Elena, Elena for nearly everyone.  Will they both survive?

• Caroline and Matt – Caroline revealed her true nature to Matt in order to save his life – now Matt’s freaking out.  Will Caroline compel Matt to forget what he’s seen, or will he accept Caroline as a vampire?

• Bonnie and Jeremy – Bonnie has gotten her powers back – and apparently information on how to kill Klaus.  Will her power be enough to help her friends? Will Jeremy get in the way of her using it?

• Jenna and Alaric – Looks like Aunt Jenna’s world is about to be blown wide open – again.  It’s not enough that she was suddenly recruited to be the parent of two teenagers when her sister died – now she’s going to have to deal with Elena’s birth mother, who also happens to be a vampire.  Is the clueless Jenna about to have the whole truth revealed to her?  Will Alaric – who gave his ring to John Gilbert – be around to protect her? Or will he need to sacrifice his life to save hers?

• John Gilbert and Isobel Saltzman – my first prediction is that these two will not make it to Season 3.   John may have gotten his ring back, but I am not convinced that it is quite the same ring.  And Katherine herself says to Isobel “You’re being here changes everything.”  Yes, it does.  We need a vampire to break the curse, right?  And isn’t Isobel a vampire?  Frankly, I’m betting that this means Caroline is off the hook! 

• Tyler – Tyler is currently out of town.  But when he returns, I am betting he will bring with him an interesting aspect of Lockwood Lycanthropy.  I’m betting that Tyler is an “alpha male” – a wolf who retains human reasoning ability when changed.  That’s why Jules was so hot to get him back to Florida with her. 

Apparently, it runs in the family. 

Alaric to Mayor Lockwood in “The Turning Point” (1.10)   ”No, you look like a full-grown alpha male douche bag.”

Fasten your seatbelts everyone – the fun is about to begin again!

Recently on the Vampire Diaries, Elena made a deal with Elijah.  I’m thinking this is more like a deal with the devil.  In any case, it’s a deal with one of the “Originals”.

Elijah tricked Jenna into inviting him into the Gilbert family home, although I suspect that for an Original, getting into a house is not big deal.  Once in, it was easy for him to get Elena alone for a private little chat. 

Elijah says he doesn’t want to hurt Elena.  He wants to make a deal with her.  Turns out he doesn’t want to break the curse of the sun and the moon – or so he says. 

His story is that he is not in Klaus’s inner circle.  I’d love to know what he did to get kicked out of the inner circle, because I can’t imagine that he just left!  Elijah says that Klaus is a paranoid recluse.  When Klaus shows up, Elijah wants to kill him.  He wants Elena to help draw him out, and in return, he will protect her and everyone she cares about.

This explains why Elijah hasn’t killed Elena yet, because he’s certainly had his opportunities.  But he says that if other vampires – who are as scared of Klaus as Rose is – find out about her doppelganger self, they will attempt to take her to Klaus in exchange for favors. Elijah wants to control the timing of this event so he has the advantage over Klaus, and can kill him. 

Elijah assures Elena that he can protect her and everyone she cares about because of Bonnie, and his own witch friends, Jonas and Luka.  Elijah tells Elena that he is a man of his word (although I’d argue that he’s not a “man” at all – certainly not in the truest sense).  He insists that when he makes a deal, he keeps his end of the bargain. 

To her credit, before she agrees his terms, Elena makes a bargain of her own.  She will agree to go along with Elijah only if he gets Stefan out of the tomb. 

Elijah complies. 

This is not the first time Elena has tried negotiating with Elijah – remember back in “Rose” when she didn’t want to go with Elijah and told him she knew about the moonstone?  And Elijah compelled her?

Then the discussion was interrupted by the Brothers Salvatore – and Elijah wound up dead – or so we all thought.

But this time, Elena is free to deal, and so she does.  Now she is obligated.

And Elijah is not someone that I’d want to be obligated to in any way.  So many things just don’t add up.

When we first met Rose and Trevor, it was because they’d kidnapped Elena for Elijah, – who showed up and knocked Trevor’s head off, but who also told Rose he had complete authority to grant her request for freedom in return for the Petrova doppelganger. 

Now where does he get off making an offer like that if he is not in Klaus’s inner circle?  Sounds like a liar to me – and a liar can’t be trusted.

Remember that Elijah – an original – was surprised by the news of Elena.  He knew “for a fact” that Katerina Petrova was the last Petrova doppelganger.

So if that’s true – if he was “fooled” – he’s not as powerful as he’s pretending – and again, if he’s pretending, he is not to be trusted!

There are two other elements in particular that have me doubting Elijah’s story.  One of them is his friend Jonas, the warlock, who is now in possession of the moonstone, since his son Luka tricked Bonnie into giving it up.  So Elijah has one of the required elements for breaking the curse.  If he doesn’t want to break the curse, why go to all that trouble to get the moonstone?

Of course, Jonas could be working for Klaus behind Elijah’s back!

And what about Jules?  She has said herself she’s been around a long time.  How long? Perhaps 500 years.  Maybe more.  And exactly who was she talking to on the phone when she said “Mason lied to us”?  Could it possibly have been Elijah – or Elijah’s buddy the warlock, Jonas?  If Jules is involved with Elijah, he has another element for breaking the curse – a werewolf.  

But Klaus could have Jules on his side already – perhaps it was Klaus who Jules was talking to on the phone.

Elijah has a witch/warlock, a werewolf, the moonstone, and presumably his pick of vampires. 

Or Klaus does.

We just don’t know, do we?

Trust Elijah?  No way.

Katherine is clearly scared to death of Elijah.  Why?  It can’t be good!

But now that Elijah has kept his part of the bargain with Elena – to get Stefan out of the tomb – what other choice does Elena have?

Trust Elijah?  In the words of Katherine “That right there was the biggest mistake you ever made.”

Hopefully lots of people agree with me when I say that when I watched the episode “Katerina”, it was the first time that I actually felt bad for Katherine.  The Katherine flashbacks gave us first insight into the person she was as a human, and why she has become the person that she now is.

This episode was so crucial because it showed us Katherine as a human, a regular person living in society and being a part of a family. It showed us that even the most horrible of vampires most likely had a somewhat humble life at some point in time.  As was very true during Katherine’s human life (even up until recent history), having children out of wedlock was very much looked down upon and considered shameful. As most mother’s do, she wanted to see her baby even if only for a second, and my feeling bad for her kicked in when she was ultimately told “no”. As a viewer, I sympathized with her even more when I found out not only was her baby given away, but she was also sent away by her family. No baby, no family. Salt in the wound. She probably thought that things were looking up for herself when she met Klaus, but then realized what he was really after: killing the Petrova doppleganger. More salt in the wound. From what the episode showed us, Katherine didn’t appear to be very selfish until the very end of her human life. She used Trevor and Rose to save herself from sacrifice, and has used people ever since to keep herself alive. And although a part of me wants to hate Katherine for the initial selfishness, can we really blame her? I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone, but I wouldn’t want to be sacrificed to break a curse either. She has harmed people along the way, but now we know it is for her own survival (instead of simply “just because”) which I think most of us can understand in varying degrees. This episode definitely helped humanize Katherine.

Assuming this is all true, could Katherine possible lighten up a bit if Klaus and the Originals were no longer a threat? Could she possibly be the person that she was when she just wanted to see her baby girl? There is a glimmer of hope that Katherine could be a better person, like she used to be. I think it would be awesome if she would side with the Salvatores and fight Klaus together which may free Katherine . . . from herself. What do you think?

We have seen the end of Mason Lockwood.  To some, it seems that Damon Salvatore killed Mason in order to protect Elena, or out of jealousy, revenge, or because of the natural antipathy between vampires and werewolves.  As Damon says to Jeremy “It’s kill or be killed.”

Consider, however, that while one or all of these may have been Damon’s initial motives, ultimately, Damon killed Mason as an act of mercy.

Vampires and werewolves are natural adversaries – a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire.  Damon and Mason have already taken shots at each other.  Now Damon’s mission is to find Katherine, learn why she has returned to Mystic Falls, and what she wants with the moonstone.   Once he has the information, Mason is history.

He captures and binds Mason, demonstrates that lack of cooperation will be unpleasant, and then begins the inquiry.

There is not much emotion behind the torture and inquisition – he’s just fact finding.

At first.

He wants to know where Katherine is, what she’s up to and what she wants with the moonstone.  Despite the prodding with a red hot poker, Mason is not forthcoming with any information.

Enter Jeremy with wolfsbane – a new torture tool.  A light application on Mason’s cheek demonstrates that this is a potent plant.

Again, Damon asks – “Where is Katherine? What does she want with the moonstone? What is she up to?  She can’t compel you because you’re supernatural– what is Katherine doing in Mystic Falls?”

Then Mason touches a nerve – “She’s with me – Jealous?”

We see this remark touches a nerve with Damon, and into Mason’s offensive mouth goes the wolfsbane.

And as he spits and coughs up the inside of his mouth and throat, Mason finally explains – Katherine wants the moonstone in order to lift Mason’s curse.  Damon is skeptical (naturally) – why would a vampire help a werewolf?

Mason – “Because she loves me.”

And with that revelation, everything changes.

Damon’s gut reaction reveals itself in his eyes.  Damon pities Mason – because he knows exactly how Mason feels – because Damon felt the same way once, about the very same woman.

He sees himself in Mason – a young man in love, and totally unaware that the woman he has fallen for is merely using him for her own selfish purposes.  Not only is she using him, she has no feelings for him at all.

Under the cynical, sarcastic personality of Damon Salvatore, there is the memory of a hopeful, innocent heart – a young man who was so enthralled with his first love that he let her turn him into a vampire.  He loved her so much he believed it when she told him she wanted to be with him forever.

The sting of Katherine’s betrayal and rejection are recent.   All those years of waiting for her – longing for her – are the basis for Damon’s cynicism and sarcasm.  He’s endured over one hundred and seventy years of emotional pain and longing, and damaged his relationship with his brother – only to be told it was all for nothing.  Katherine didn’t care – she could have come for him at any time, and she didn’t – because she didn’t care.

When Damon says to Mason “you’re stupid”, he is reflecting on himself as well (as in “How could I have been so stupid?”) and we know he’s been beating himself up over it since he learned the truth about Katherine.

Mason begs Jeremy not to let his curse happen to Tyler.  And we see the pain of the curse in Mason’s eyes and hear it in his voice.  And Damon tells Jeremy “He wants me to kill him – to release the curse”. And we know it’s true.

But what curse does Mason now want to be released from?  The curse of the werewolf?  Or the curse of loving a woman so seductive but so evil?

Then Damon reveals what we already know – that he sees himself in Mason.  Sure, he says it through the veil of his ever-present sarcasm, but he speaks the truth.  Then…

Mason  – “I love her”.

Damon – “I know”.

And he really does know.  Katherine was Damon’s first love – she is probably Mason’s first love too.

And Mason now knows that Katherine betrayed him and never intended to remove his curse – and Mason just can’t live with the curse.

In the end, Damon does what is merciful.  He puts an end to Mason’s pain.  The pain of the curse of the werewolf, and the pain of love’s betrayal.

And after he rips out Mason’s heart, Damon’s face does not reflect the look of one who has just vanquished a mortal enemy.  We see the resignation of having done what had to be done - and perhaps the wish that someone had been as merciful to him.
