The last episode of the Vampire Diaries didn’t end with a major cliffhanger like we all thought it would. This is very unlike TVD. We all know that the TVD writers love cliffhangers. Last year, the mid season finale ended with a major cliffhanger. This year, the show ended with a survival of Rose in question. I don’t know about you, but whether or not Rose survives is not such a cliffhanger. First of all, she’s not one of the main characters. Second of all, she’s not a likable character. I don’t care about Rose’s character and I’m sure every other fan in the TVD fandom would agree with me on that. Even though there was no major cliffhangers in the last episode, there are still story lines that are going to develop and take shapes that I cannot wait to see. So, here are my predictions on what’s going to happen next on the show…
- Jules will find out what really happened to Mason and who was responsible for it.
- Whoever Jules was talking to on the phone will show up in Mystic Falls.
- Rose will not survive the werewolf bite.
- A love triangle will form between Caroline, Tyler, and Matt.
- Bonnie and Luka will hook up and break up before the season is over.
- Isobel and Uncle John will return to Mystic Falls.
- Jenna and Alaric’s relationship will hit some speed bumps. (Jenna said things are really good between she and Alaric. Let’s face it, this is Mystic Falls we’re talking about. Nothing stays good. When things are going well, Doom comes knocking on your door. In this case, Doom named Isobel.)
- Klaus will show up in Mystic Falls and when he does, Elijah will probably end up dead. (I feel like Elijah has been underestimating Klaus a bit. He told Elena that once Klaus shows up, he will kill him. I think Klaus will kill Elijah first.)
- Katherine will eventually get out of the tomb.
Let’s hope at least one of my predictions come true. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Elena’s Dysfunctional Biological Family
by Rachael on February 3, 2011
It never fails during an episode of the Vampire Diaries, that there be something of a cliffhanger at the end: “The Descent” was no exception. At the very end of the episode, the audience sees that Elena’s biological, vampire-hating father has returned to Mystical Falls.
The big question is what Stefan told him in order to get him to come to Elena’s aid, and what exactly are Johnathan Gilbert’s motives. Is he simply there to do whatever is necessary to save his daughter? Or is there something else he is after?
At this point, I cannot see any other motive for John, but, of course, it’s not in his nature to be a selfless man. I also cannot see John aligning himself with the vampires that he loathes for any reason, even to save his daughter. As Elena said in episode 2.1 – “The Return,” her father sees the world with so much hatred. Is John willing to put that hatred aside in order to protect his daughter for the first time in her life? I hope that is the case.
According to his behavior so far, John is pretty much a villain. I hope, however, that he will finally have his eyes opened by Elena, and become a better person. Yes, this may be wishful thinking, especially because next week’s episode is titled “Daddy Issues,” but I’m willing to give John the benefit of the doubt anyway.
It is clear that John is so cruel because he hates himself on levels that the audience has yet to fully understand. Stefan pointed this out in the first episode of this season when he said that he would turn John into a vampire and watch him hate himself more than he already does. My guess is that one of the main reasons he is so bitter is because he let his own daughter be raised by his brother, and never said anything. To pretend to be your daughter’s uncle instead of her father and watch her grow up under somebody else’s care cannot be an easy thing. I for one think that John is a coward for not being a father to Elena, and owes it to her to do whatever is in his power to make things right.
I think one of the most interesting storylines that will be explored as the show progresses is Elena’s relationship with both of her biological parents. We only saw Isobel for a brief time, but just enough time to see how much of her humanity she has lost. Even though John isn’t a vampire, I think he has lost part of his humanity as well. Can Elena bring out their parental instincts enough so that they can be human enough to want to protect her? I can’t wait to see what sort of relationship that Isobel, John, and Elena will have in the future. All I can say at this point is that if you think your family is dysfunctional, you might want to think again.
