Elijah

Meet More of The Original Family

by Deb on December 9, 2011

Two more members of the Original Family have been cast read on for more scoop:

British actor Caspar Zafar(La Femme Muskateer)  and Australian actor Nathaniel Buzolic (Out of the Blue)  have been tapped to play the recurring roles of Finn and Kol, respectively, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. Both brothers have a bone to pick with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), especially since they’ve been locked up in those coffins Klaus has been carting around for so long.

We’ve previously met Klaus’ step-father, Mikael (Sebastian Roche), who Klaus killed in the midseason finale, and Klaus’ sister, Rebekah (Claire Holt), who recently died at the hands of Elena (Nina Dobrev). Meanwhile, the group’s other brother, Elijah (Daniel Gillies,  is back in the coffins that Stefan (Paul Wesley) so cleverly stole from Klaus. Two other Original brothers died of the plague and a werewolf attack centuries prior.

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8/7c on The CW. Zafar and Buzolic will first appear in Episode 13.

Flashback-crazed The Vampire Diaries is doing the time warp again.

This week’s episode (airing Thursday at 8/7c on The CW) travels back 1,000 years to Viking times and, not surprisingly, the hour promises to be a mythological bonanza.

“There’s going to be a lot revealed about the Original family and where we came from,” previews Claire Holt, who plays the newest Original vamp in Mystic Falls, Rebekah. For those keeping track at home, the clan also includes blonde, bad boy brother Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and dearly missed Elijah (Daniel Gillies, who returns in this week’s episode). We’ll also meet the Original mother, the powerful Esther (Alice Evans).

The CW Schedules The Vampire Diaries Fall Finale and Winter Premiere

“You get to see how [Rebekah] interacts with her family and what it was like back then,” continues Holt, who says the episode sheds light on “how her relationship with her brothers and how her relationship with Klaus developed. [You'll see] why they became so close and why they are so loyal to each other.”

Perhaps it has something to do with Mikael, the big bad vampire that sends daggers of terror through even Klaus“You’ll learn that there’s a very good reason why they’re afraid of him,” teases Holt. “It has a lot to do with their history and why they are the way they are… He’s definitely a threat to them.”

After so many months of wondering just what was going to happen to Matt, he turned out to be the most important character in this episode – and proved that he loves his friends enough to make the ultimate sacrifice for them.

Matt and Bonnie accidentally happen upon Klaus in the gym, just after he’s killed “Not Now Dana.”   Klaus informs Bonnie that he needs information from the Original Witch on how to make his hybrid army – and promptly forces his blood into Tyler’s mouth and snaps his neck to add a dash of urgency to his request.

The look on Matt’s face when Klaus snaps Tyler’s neck is priceless – go Matt!

Despite feeling alone and isolated, Matt determines that if Jeremy could talk to the dead after dying and coming back, so could he.  He then trusted Bonnie’s skill with CPR and stepped off the deck and into the pool, with a big old weight hooked to his belt.  He drowned, but before he is completely dead, Bonnie is able to save him, and he gives her a message from Vicki – so that Bonnie can save Tyler.

If Caroline is the character who represents cheerful perseverance, Matt is the one who represents genuine loyalty.  It is going to be interesting to see what happens now that he can communicate with the dead.  Vicki’s motives – despite her love for her brother – are clearly suspect.

Matt’s story arc – and specifically the information he gets from Vicki before Bonnie successfully revives him – provides key information for Klaus.  And I am left marveling at how the writers have – once again – made the best use of all the characters to weave an irresistible story that, once disclosed, not only explains the past but moves the plot forward yet again, all while dropping yet more interesting clues as to what may happen next.

It seems that the Original Witch hated Klaus, and told him that the doppelganger needed to die in order for him to become a hybrid.  Vicki tells Matt that Elena must die in order for Bonnie to save Tyler.  But Klaus suspects the information and tries an experiment.  Rather than killing Elena, he has Tyler drink her blood – and Tyler, unlike the other hybrid attempts – does not get the bloody eyes, go rabid, and die.

Rebekah reflects that the Original Witch is still screwing with Klaus after a thousand years.  But Klaus says it makes sense if you look at it from her point of view.  The intent was that Klaus would be alone for eternity.  The Original Witch hated him.  So this isn’t about balance at all – this was revenge.

But for what?  I have a theory on that – read further please.

Now that he knows he can breed his hybrid army with Elena’s blood (a supply of which he is taking by compelling hospital staff),  Klaus reveals to his sister Rebekah that the whole point of creating a hybrid army was not for power, but so he would not have to be alone.

The look of pain on Rebekah’s face is perfect.  Klaus had a loving family – one that he apparently can’t completely abandon because he’s carrying them around with him.  But Rebekah knows that Klaus destroyed it.  And now he wants to turn around and create a new one.  Klaus is ashamed in the moment and tries to hide his shame from his sister, who walks away – just as Damon shows up.

From Damon and Katherine’s road trip (with Jeremy in the trunk) we learn that Katherine’s friend Pearl knew about Mikael the Vampire Hunter, but did not divulge the information to Katherine – only to her daughter Anna – thus the need for Jeremy.  Anna tells him (with a little persuasion from Damon) that Mikael is asleep and you don’t want to wake him. But Damon tells Klaus that Mikael is on his way to Mystic Falls.

Klaus is so terrified that he leaves, presumably with only the blood he’s managed to get from Elena so far, because he leaves without Elena and his new hybrid, Tyler.

Damon carries Elena home from the hospital, returns the Original Witch’s necklace to her, offers to compel her to forget (this is progress for Damon – he asked her permission), which she refuses, and tells her he will never leave her again.

But Stefan unexpectedly enters the room, takes a drink, and announces that he’s Klaus’s watchdog – and Damon and Elena are free to “carry on”.

I strongly suspect that Stefan has not “turned off” his emotions at all.  I think it’s an act.  Klaus is gone, but little sister Rebekah remains behind and will undoubtedly be reporting back to her big brother.  Klaus himself said he’d never seen anything like the love Stefan has for Elena – and regardless of what Elena thinks she saw happen, I don’t believe Klaus was truly able to compel Stefan to turn off his emotions completely.

After all, Klaus’ test of the compulsion was for Stefan to feed on Elena – and Elena’s still alive.  What happened to the Ripper?  My suspicion is that Klaus – now a hybrid – has lost some of his Original Vampire power, including the power to compel another vampire.  Or it could be something else?

Mind-control vs. compulsion?  Where have we seen that before?

At the end of the episode, we see Katherine and Jeremy (how’s that for an odd pairing) at a crypt with the name “Pickett” on it, in the oldest wing of the largest cemetery in Charlotte, NC.  Mikael was apparently entombed there in the 1990’s by a witch.  (I’m betting that witch was Sheila Bennett, Bonnie’s grandmother.)

Why is Mikael – a vampire – hunting vampires?  I think he cultivated his reputation as a vampire hunter for the sake of fear, but that his true mission was to kill Klaus before he could remove the curse and become a hybrid.

I am also guessing that the Original witch hated Klaus because she was aligned with the Original family BEFORE they became vampires.

So here is my theory.

The Original Vampire Papa is Mikael, and his last name is Saltzman, and his descendants include Alaric Saltzman, Mystic Falls’ resident Vampire Hunter.

The Original Vampire Mama is Esther, and her last name is Petrova, and her descendants (through her daughter Charlotte) will be the Petrova doppelgangers.

Her best friend was the Original Witch, whose descendants will be Bennetts, and the origins of the Bennett animosity towards vampires is explained further below.

When they were human, Mikael and Esther had 7 children, but Mikael was not the father of one of them.  Esther’s secret shame is that she sired a son by another man (who happened to carry the werewolf curse).  This son was Klaus (who has inherited the werewolf curse).

When the family was still human, Klaus fell in love – with the daughter of the Original Witch.  Klaus’s older brother was also in love with Original Witch daughter (the proverbial triangle).

Two events occurred that altered both families in profound ways.

First, the Original Witch discovered Esther’s shameful secret.  Mikael – outraged by his wife’s betrayal, tracks down the other man and kills him and his entire family, thus creating the seeds of animosity between the werewolves and vampires.

Second, Klaus, as a result of being “outed” by the Original Witch, is now a virtual outcast from his family.  He attempts to kill her daughter (who, once the secret was revealed, wants nothing more to do with Klaus, isolating him even further.)  The Original Witch intervenes in order to save her daughter – who escapes.  The Original Witch, however, is mortally wounded.

Feeling betrayed by her friend, and angry that her daughter had been put in danger because Klaus’ lineage and attempted murder, and knowing her end is near, the Original Witch puts a curse on the entire family, turning them into vampires.

But Mikael begs the Original Witch for help.  He wants to know if there is any way to kill a vampire.  He will take care of exacting revenge on Klaus.  She tells him that she only way to kill an Original Vampire is with a dagger carved from the wood of a white oak tree.

Mikael, following the witch’s instructions, attempts to kill Klaus with a dagger carved from white oak, but because of his werewolf blood, Klaus is completely unaffected.  Stunned by his Father’s attempt to kill him, and angry with his family, Klaus sets the white oak tree on fire.

Enraged, Mikael comes after Klaus again, but Klaus side-steps him and Mikael plunges the dagger into his wife, Esther, who dies instantly.

Now, knowing that her spell will be ineffective on Klaus, the Original Witch curses him further and very specifically.  Although his werewolf blood is protecting him from death by means of the white oak dagger, the Witch suppresses his werewolf attributes with a curse, which she seals with the blood of a Petrova –Esther.

Klaus – knowing that she is dying – forces the Original Witch to tell him how to remove the hybrid curse.  She reveals that he will need a vampire, a werewolf, a witch, and to drink the blood of a Petrova doppelganger (who will come from Esther’s Petrova lineage through her daughter, Charlotte) until she is dead.  Klaus then kills the Original Witch and fleas his home, accompanied by his loyal brother Elijah.

Klaus, whose sister Charlotte had children, now begins a hunt for Charlotte in order to track the Petrova doppelganger – while the Petrova family members take pains to protect Charlotte and her descendants.  In 1490, Katerina Petrova – a doppelganger – gives birth to a baby girl.  The baby is immediately removed before Katerina can even hold her.

Katerina is banished and winds up in England, where she meets Trevor, who recognizes her as a Petrova doppelganger. Wanting to ingratiate himself with Klaus, he introduces her to his brother, Elijah, who immediately knows who she is, and who is struck by her resemblance to his sister Charlotte.

Klaus, believing he has found his doppelganger, makes plans for her sacrifice.  Katerina thwarts his plans.  Klaus goes on a murderous rampage, killing everyone in her family.

But he doesn’t stop there.  He then starts killing off members of his, Original family.  Believing Elijah has betrayed him, Elijah becomes his first intended victim.  But Elijah escapes Klaus’s wrath.

Those in his family who can do so escape.  Klaus spends centuries hunting them down and killing them with daggers dipped in white oak ash, but places them in individual coffins and carries them with him wherever he goes.)  Due to his hybrid lineage, using the dagger and white oak ash doesn’t kill Klaus when he uses it to kill his vampire family members.

Mikael, however, eludes Klaus at every turn.  Mikael becomes the first in a long line of Vampire Hunters, tracking Klaus across the centuries in order to get his family back, and to prevent Klaus from becoming a true hybrid and creating a hybrid race.

I can hardly wait for the next few episodes for those breadcrumbs that the writer put into each episode as they continue to weave the story of these people and their families.  I don’t care if I am right or wrong about any of my speculation.  The Vampire Diaries is like a great book that you can’t put down.

The Vampire Diaries Spoiler Roundup

by Deb on October 4, 2011

Welcome to the weekly The Vampire Diaries Spoiler roundup, I will be providing you with spoilers from various news sites like Watch With Kristen and Ask Ausiello and EW. You will receive all of the spoilers from the week all in one place in this weekly article. This week we get some interesting information on Tyler and Caroline, enjoy.

@mannionh: Tyler and Caroline on The Vampire Diaries please??
We know a vampire and werewolf hooking up is what created Klaus (Joseph Morgan), eventual hybrid extraordinaire. We also know vamp Caroline (Candice Accola) and wolf Tyler (Michael Trevino) recently hooked up, so where does that leave our favorite TVD couple? “We’ve said two things on our show, very clearly. Vampires can’t procreate and yet, vampires’ bodies work like anybody else’s,” Julie says. “Door’s open to take either rule.”

@xMelissaR04: VAMPIRE DIARIES PLEASEEE! After last weeks episode im DYING!!
You and us both, sister. Guess what? It gets even better as a fan favorite (and our personal favorite) is set to return. “Right now, we’re about to start shooting an episode that takes us back to the origins story of the Original family,” Julie Plec says. “We will see Elijah (Daniel Gillies) again.” Wheeeee! While we probably won’t meet all the Originals, the show is reportedly looking to introduce the Original mommy. Double wheeeee!

Question: Any inside gossip on The Vampire Diaries? —Bridii
Ausiello: Rumor has it the Oct. 13 episode, “The Reckoning,” is going to be E-P-I-C. Basically, Klaus goes totally off the rails and no one is safe — especially not Elena, Stefan and Tyler.

Question: Any Vampire Diaries scoop concerning Caroline? —Jo
Ausiello: Dying to see Caroline kick Damon’s ass? Then this Thursday’s episode is for you!

Will Elena ever admit to the chemistry she and Damon share on The Vampire Diaries— Laura
NATALIE:
She may not, but her friends will certainly catch on to their budding passions. In fact, executive producer Julie Plec says that the big “elephant in the room” hasn’t gone unnoticed and soon enough, “her friends and loved ones are going to be like, ‘What’s going on there?’”

Previously on the Vampire Diaries, the sacrifice ritual was completed, Jenna was turned into a vampire and was sacrificed by Klaus, Bonnie did a spell to keep Elena human by switching souls with Uncle John, Uncle John sacrificed himself to keep Elena human, Elijah went back on his word and didn’t kill Klaus.

Tonight’s season finale, As I Lay Dying is about Damon’s battle with the werewolf bite.

Damon’s Apology:
Damon knows he’s dying and he doesn’t have much time left. There is one thing he needs before he dies and that is Elena’s forgiveness. He comes to Elena’s house to apologize and ask her for forgiveness but Elena tells him she needs more time. Little did Elena know, Damon doesn’t have that much time left.

Drama-Free Day:
Elena’s idea of having a normal day without any drama is watching the Gone With The Wind in the middle of town square with her friends and the rest of the town. Here’s a tip, Elena, if you want something drama-free, you watch a comedy; not Gone With The Wind.

Damon’s Suicide Attempt:
Damon knows he’s going to die, so he decides to shorten the process. He takes off his ring and stands in the sunlight. His skin starts burning before Stefan pushes him away from the sunlight. Stefan puts him in the basement and promises his brother that he would find a cure.

Finding a Cure:
Stefan asks Bonnie to help him find a cure, maybe a spell that can help cure Damon. Bonnie tries to find it by channeling the dead witches. Emily possess Bonnie’s body and tells Stefan that she can’t help him because there needs to be a balance in nature. Before Emily leaves, she says a name that Bonnie hears.

Klaus.

Klaus is a key to finding a cure. Stefan goes on a mission to find Klaus, but before he does, he tells Elena about Damon.

Elijah’s Demise:
Elijah trusted his brother in the previous episode. He believed Klaus when Klaus told him that his family is still alive and that he will take Elijah to see them. Klaus is too much like Katherine. He’s manipulative and cannot be trusted. Elijah’s biggest mistake was that he trusted Klaus. Now that Klaus completed his transformation, he turns right around and stick the dagger through Elijah’s heart.

The Cure:
Klaus propose a deal to Stefan. If he gives Stefan the cure to save Damon, Stefan will have to join him for a decade of servitude. Klaus wants an another throat ripper on his team.

Stefan tells Klaus that he hasn’t been this way in a very long time. The guy survive n Bunny’s blood for crying out loud. If Stefan does this, it’s going to be really hard for him to get out of this relapse.

Klaus then show Stefan the cure. He bites Katherine and then feeds her his blood, completely healing her wound. The cure is Klaus’ blood. Since he’s the hybrid, only his blood can cure a werewolf bite on a vampire.

Sheriff Forbes’ Hunt:
Sheriff Forbes decide to hunt down on Damon tonight. She picks a bad night for vampire hunting, especially when that said vampire is sick with a werewolf disease. Sheriff Forbes comes to the Salvatore house to kill Damon but Damon gets away from her.

When Jeremy, Bonnie, and Caroline finds out about it, they take on a mission to find Damon. Jeremy finds Damon and takes him inside the Grill. Sheriff Forbes is waiting for them inside and fires a bullet at Damon but Damon moves too fast. Bullet hits Jeremy in the center of is chest.

Jeremy:
Jeremy starts off this season, being killed by Damon and brought back to life by the Gilbert Ring. Now that we’re at the season finale, he gets killed by Sheriff Forbes. Seriously, this kid has all the bad lucks in the world.

Caroline tries to feed her blood to Jeremy but it was too late. Bonnie brings Jeremy back to the Witches’ Burial Ground with the help of Alaric. Bonnie tries to channel the dead witches to save Jeremy but the witches are angry at her for misusing her powers. At the end, she begs Emily to help her, telling Emily that she loves Jeremy. That has got to be the magic word because Jeremy wakes up from the dead.

Stefan’s Deal with Klaus:
Klaus puts his blood in a bottle and tries to make a deal with Stefan. Before he gives his blood to Stefan, he makes Stefan drinks bags and bags of human blood until Stefan gets crazed with thirst. This just shows how much Stefan loves his brother. He would do anything for Damon even if it means that he has to give up living his life with Elena.

Klaus gives the bottle of his blood to Katherine and tells her she can leave. Katherine doesn’t need to be told twice before fleeing the place. Stefan doesn’t think that Katherine will give Damon the cure. I have a feeling she will. After all, she does owe Damon for the vervain.

The last thing Klaus wants from Damon before they leave town is to feed on a human girl. Stefan completely falls into it by feeding on a human girl.

Elena and Damon:
After finding Damon, Elena brings him back to the Salvatore house to take care of him. She lays with him on his bed as he’s dying. Damon apologizes again and Elena tells him that she forgives him. This is a really sweet moment between them and it is heartbreaking to watch how Damon really wants her to know that he loves her. Elena kisses him and I’m not even mad at her for doing it. And of course, that’s when Katherine shows up and gives Damon the cure. Katherine left but not before telling Elena and Damon about Stefan’s sacrifice.

The Ending:
I’m really confused about the ending. Why is Vicky and Anna back? How are they alive? Is Jeremy dreaming? Is he turning into that little boy from the sixth sense and seeing dead people? What is going on?

There are so many things I need to know. What is going to happen to Elena and Stefan’s relationship? They’d have to break up now that Stefan left town. Is Elena going to start falling in love with Damon?

How am I going to survive three months without a new episode? It’s going to be a really long summer. Until next season!

I was touched on so many levels by this past week’s episode that it is difficult to know where to start.  As with all the episodes of this show, there were many excellent lines in the script, but four in particular stood out for me.

John Gilbert: “It’s no easy task being an ordinary parent to an extraordinary child.”

The opening line of John Gilbert’s letter to Elena struck me at a deeply personal level because I am the mother of an extraordinary child myself.  Not in the way that Elena Gilbert is extraordinary, but extraordinary nonetheless.

So when John Gilbert’s voice read what he’d put on the page, his words resonated with me in a powerfully personal way.  As parents, we always want to do our best for our children.  But we are human and we often come up short.  I am sure that any parent would make the sacrifice that John Gilbert did for their child, whether that child were extraordinary or not.

As much as I have disliked the character of John Gilbert in his appearances on the show, it was really nice to see that he had a noble side after all.  A  life or death challenge often brings out the best one has to offer.  It certainly did in John Gilbert’s case.

Rest in peace, John.

Katherine Pierce: “I didn’t let love get in the way.”

Contrasting with the ultimate expression of love – sacrificing your life to save another – was the completely selfish act of Katherine, who betrayed Jenna in order to save herself.   Katherine Pierce is one of the most totally selfish beings I’ve ever encountered.  And Damon is right – she will spend eternity alone.

Because even when you are surrounded by others, if you don’t have love in your heart, you are utterly alone.

Contrasting sharply with Katherine’s selfishness was Jenna’s unselfishness in her final hours. Admitting to Elena that when the call came for her to be guardian, she had wished it had gone out to someone else, she showed up despite her personal desires.

And despite her feelings of inadequacy, she tried to do the best she could in a role for which she was ill-prepared and perhaps ill-suited.  In her final act, she made a desperate attempt to save Elena by taking a bite out of Greta.  Unfortunately, Klaus had his way.

Rest in peace, Jenna.

Elijah:  “Sometimes there’s honor in revenge.”

No, Elijah, I think what you really wanted to say is “blood is thicker than water”.

After all his assurances to Stefan, Bonnie, and the rest of the gang, Elijah sacrificed his integrity at the altar of family ties.

Elijah is so totally devoted to his family that he allowed himself to be swayed by Klaus, who told him that he did not destroy the bodies of the Original family members, and he can take Elijah to them.  Ah, Klaus, a master at knowing everyone’s weakness and exploiting it fully.

Damon was right – they should not have trusted Elijah.  Everyone has a weakness – even a 1000 year old Original Vampire!

Andy why was Damon right?  Because Damon and Elijah are reflections of each other.  I mentioned in a previous post that I believe Damon (and Elijah) lead with their hearts – whereas Stefan leads with his head.

And people who lead with their heart – while almost always well-intended – often make a bad situation worse (Damon and Elena in “The Last Day” comes to mind.)  Whatever else you can say about Damon, he is not stupid.  In real life, we don’t always see our own failings, but have no trouble seeing them when manifested in someone else.  That’s what makes them stand out to us – they are familiar in some way – a way we are, perhaps, not ready to admit to ourselves.

Damon was right because he knew instinctively that leading with the heart can lead to that nasty thing we call “unintended consequences”.

We also learned that Elijah is Klaus’ older brother, something that Damon and the rest have known all along.   As Stefan’s older brother, who is in a better position than Damon to know just how far family ties extend and what Elijah might do in the clinches?

Yes, Damon was right, but who among us would have made a different choice than Elijah did?  Blood really is thicker than water.

Jeremy Gilbert:  “I still have you.”

At the end of this episode, we see the essence of family – not in the traditional sense, but family is not always about blood ties.  The mourners are a unique group.  The situation is informed by who is present as much as it is who is absent.

Elena and Jeremy have lost everyone – they are truly orphans now.  But to paraphrase Jeremy, they still have each other.

And so do the Salvatore brothers.  Despite everything, Stefan wasted no time in declaring that they will find a way to cure Damon’s werewolf bite.

Caroline is the child of an absentee father and a mother who hates what Caroline has become.  Bonnie was essentially raised by her grandmother, who is gone.  We never see her parents at all.  And Alaric, the lone adult in the group, has lost both of the women he loved.

And who is not there?  Tyler, of course, but whether or not this is due to his wounds or for another reason is not clear.  Until he tells Stefan, Damon is the only one who knows Tyler inflicted a bite on him.  Perhaps Tyler, knowing Damon, Stefan and Caroline were attending the funeral, just doesn’t feel comfortable among so many vamps.  No way to know at this point.

But the most telling absence in this group is Matt.  Matt, who is as alone as Katherine Pierce.  Matt, who just can’t handle “all this”.  Matt, with no Father, an absentee Mother, a dead sister, and a lot of responsibility – school, a job, and bills to pay.  His personal life is in such a mess, he can’t handle all the drama of the supernaturals in his intimate circle.

Poor Matt – this group of intimate friends is exactly what he does need, but he can’t see it.  He’s on overload.

These friends at the Mystic Falls cemetery are a family.   And I believe that as we approach the end of Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, we close the chapter on the saga of “The Curse” and open a chapter on “Family” in all its many forms.  As Julie Plec herself said “The show, at its core, is about family. It’s about the love of family.”

I believe we will continue to see each of the remaining regular characters continue to develop in ways we can only imagine.

And we will not lose Damon to a werewolf bite.  As I said in my prior post, the Elixir may save him.  A witch and a spell may save him.  Or something completely unexpected may save him.

Ultimately, I’m betting love will save him.

Stefan is right – whatever it takes, they will find a way.  Stefan is not going to lose his older brother – not now.

I can hardly believe there is only one episode remaining in Season 2.  I am already wondering how to get through the summer without my weekly fix of this wonderful show.  Thankfully, I have Season 1 on DVD, and Season 2 on my DVR.

But the creativity of the story lines on this show reminds of those wonderful books that you can’t put down because you want to know what’s on the next page! I have stayed up for hours plowing through books like that many times.

In this case, there is no book, and the wait is beyond our control!  We are forced to wait until the fall to learn what happens next!!  The wait is already killing me!

I Still Have You – Recap

by Cathy on May 6, 2011

Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Damon made Elena drink his blood so he wouldn’t lose her, Tyler came back home and fell in Klaus’ trap, Stefan and Elena had a talk about becoming a vampire, Jenna was turned into a vampire, and Damon got bitten by Tyler.

This week episode, The Sun Also Rises, is about the sacrifice ritual and the aftermath of it.

Jenna’s Transformation:
Elena tries to save Jenna, but Greta stops her with a spell. Jenna doesn’t know what’s going on at first until Elena tells her that she’s in transformation. Greta offers her blood to Jenna, so she can complete her transformation. Elena tries to stop Jenna from feeding, but Jenna’s vampire instincts take over and she feeds on Greta.

The Return of Bonnie and Jeremy:
Finally! These two have been MIA for the past two episodes. They’ve been locked up in that Mansion for a long time reading Grimoires. I felt like Bonnie and Jeremy have been kept out of the loop and they were told about the situation a little too late.

The Other Love Triangle:
I have to give it up for Caroline for being such a loyal friend. Even when Tyler is in his wolf form and trying to attack her, she never lose faith in him. She risks her life, trying to protect him. Matt, on the other hand, acts like any normal teenage boy would. I can’t blame him for shooting Tyler because he was protecting Caroline and himself. I also can’t blame him for breaking up with Caroline, even though it breaks my heart. One of the good things from tonight episode is the rekindling of friendship between Caroline and Tyler.

Operation Keep Elena Human:
Bonnie and Jeremy read somewhere in the Grimoires that Emily Bennett cast a resuscitation spell in 1864 and Jonathan Gilbert knew about it. Jeremy asks Uncle John to bring all the Gilbert Journals to find out what really happened.

It turns out that, there is a way. If a parent is willing to die for his or her child, the child can be saved. It’s like switching souls. John agrees to do it. Bonnie puts a spell on John before she leaves with Elijah and Damon to kill Klaus.

Stefan’s Sacrifice:
When Stefan finds out from Damon that Jenna’s been taken, he decides to do what he does best. Self-sacrifice. He offers to take Jenna’s place, but Klaus has already made his mind. He chose Jenna and she would be the vampire that he will sacrifice to break the curse.

Elijah’s Revenge:
There is a reason why Elijah wants to kill Klaus. It is not just because if the curse is broken, Klaus would become the deadliest hybrid. It’s because Klaus has took every single one of Elijah’s family and killed them. This is the reason why Elijah wants to kill Klaus. Stefan questions Elijah whether or not he can actually go through with killing his brother. Elijah tells him that Stefan has his words he will kill Klaus.

Breaking the Curse:
Greta puts the three ingredients: the doppleganger, the vampire, and the werewolf in the middle of the field surrounded by fire. Can I just say that I am so grateful Tyler isn’t the werewolf they have? I never liked Jules.

First, Greta breaks the moonstone that is binding the curse. After that, Klaus sacrifice a werewolf by ripping out Jules’ heart. I kind of feel bad for her but if a werewolf had to die, it’s better she than Tyler.

Because Stefan offers to take Jenna’s place, Klaus makes Elena choose between Jenna and Stefan. Elena refuses to, and Klaus puts a stake into Stefan’s back to weaken him. Then, he turns to Jenna but Jenna ran and bit Greta’s neck. She wasn’t fast enough. Klaus catches her and put a stake through her heart. Even though I knew it had to happen, it still took me by surprise. I always liked Jenna, but knowing this show, no one is safe.

Klaus then, goes for Elena and drinks her blood until she dies. As soon as the doppleganger sacrifice is completed, Klaus’ transformation starts. Damon, Elijah and Bonnie get to the scene and Bonnie does her spell. When Klaus is weaken, Elijah shoves his hand inside Klaus’ chest to grab his heart. This is when Klaus chooses to tell Elijah that he didn’t kill the family and that if Elijah kills him, he would never know where to find them. Of course Elijah caves and ran from the scene with Klaus.

The Aftermath:

  • Elena comes back to life and as soon as she does, John dies.
  • Jeremy and Elena are left with no parent. The only parental figure they have left in their lives is Alaric.
  • John left his Gilbert Ring for Elena.
  • Damon finally tells Stefan about his werewolf bite.

This is such a tragic episode. I’m really going to miss Jenna. Next week is the season finale. What’s going to happen to Damon? I really hope they don’t leave Damon’s fate as a cliffhanger.

Impulse control.  This is a serious issue for Damon.

His impulses caused him to do something with some very serious consequences.  To save Elena’s life, he forced her to drink his blood.  Now, if she dies, she will turn into a vampire.

His motive was to prevent her from dying – to keep from losing her forever (even when she told him he wouldn’t).  But now, if Klaus is able to carry out the ritual of the sacrifice, Elena will become a vampire.

And as we now know, this is not something she wished for herself.

Elena wanted what every young woman wants – to live the natural progression of life.  To marry, have children, and grow old – she wanted to experience life in terms of the human timeline.

Now, she may well have to give all that up.  Although she loves Stefan, and can share eternity with him, this was not her plan.

But Damon – with his inability to control his impulses – took her choices away.

And according to Elijah, Elena will never forgive him.

Elijah: “And never, for a vampire, is a very long time.”

But is Elijah correct?  I don’t think so.

If Elena has demonstrated anything at all, it is that she has an open heart and she is emotionally strong.

  • She bore up well upon the death of both her parents.
  • She fell in love with a vampire because she wasn’t afraid of him.
  • She watched her natural mother self-immolate and did not collapse in fear.
  • She has overcome her antipathy towards her father in order to try to have a relationship of some kind with him.
  • She stabbed herself, and then “killed” Elijah.
  • And, she has forgiven Damon for “killing” her brother.

Now since people who are killed on this show don’t always stay dead, perhaps it’s easier to forgive.  But I think being compassionate and forgiving is Elena’s nature.  She will give just about anyone she cares for more chances than they deserve.  I think she will forgive Damon, eventually.

And why?  Because, as Stefan himself tells her…

Stefan:  “He did it because he loves you.”

But what if Elijah is correct?  He’s has been a vampire for 1000 years, and there is a melancholy quality about him that makes me think that not only does he personally know that his statement is true, I believe he has a lot more in common with Damon than we know.

Elijah – in his youth – was in love.  Perhaps he fell in love before he and his family became vampires – perhaps after.  It doesn’t really matter.  The woman he loved was mortal and I think he turned her so he wouldn’t lose her.

And then she turned on him, because – like Elena – it was not her choice.  This woman is still “alive” and she’s made Elijah pay for his decision ever since.

So when he tells Damon that Elena will never forgive him, Elijah is speaking from personal experience.  He also tells Damon that although he talks a good game, he doesn’t really know anything.  And based on the 1000 years of Elijah’s existence compared to Damon’s 150 – give or take – this is certainly true.  Elijah has seen it all and probably done it all.

What I find fascinating is that for some reason, Elijah not only allows Damon to live (after all, Damon killed him once and helped kill him a second time), he is kind to him.  It’s for this reason that I believe Elijah sees himself in Damon (albeit a younger, less mature, more impulsive self) and will perhaps turn into a mentor of sorts.

Lord knows, Damon could use one.

There was a part of this episode that did not ring true to me – the whole “walk in the woods” thing.

The first thing was the idea of Stefan taking Elena on a hike.  If this were my last day on earth as a human, I think I might want to spend it with other humans – especially since it might be the last time I have an opportunity to relate to them as human.

But what do I know – it’s not like I have ever experienced my last human day with the prospect of death and rebirth as a vampire looming before me.

The second thing that was off was the appearance of the falls.  Elena seemed surprised.   She’s been living in Mystic Falls for 17 years and doesn’t know of the existence of the falls?  That didn’t work for me.

But it looked beautiful.

Finally, Elena’s speech about wanting to live her life – grow up, decide to have a family, have children, etc. – it felt disingenuous.  Although Elena wants to believe that she can find a way to foil Klaus’s plan, she has said continually, throughout the series, that if it is a choice between herself and the people she loves, she is prepared to die.  She even stabbed herself to make a point with Elijah.

So if she thinks she may die, and she’s willing to die, how’s she going to have all that growth and all those human experiences?

Do you see my problem here?

While I appreciate the fact that the hiking scenes were an opportunity for Elena and Stefan to talk about their future and Elena’s feelings about becoming a vampire, it didn’t work for me emotionally because it felt insincere.  Although I believe that 17 year old Elena has believed all along that she loves Stefan, now she’s not even sure she knows what love is?

What presumably was intended to be the emotional apex of Elena’s character arc just fell flat for me because emotionally it was false.

It’s been clear from the beginning that Stefan loves Elena and wants to spend forever with her.  And I thought that Elena loved him enough that she would eventually get to the point where she would make the decision to become a vampire.  Now it almost sounds like she’s been leading Stefan along.

Worse than that.  It sounds like break-up time to me.

Please feel free to throw darts, but please help me see where I am wrong about this.

Interestingly, the one part of the hike that I did appreciate had to do with emotions!  It was Stefan’s explanation to Elena of feelings as a vampire – happiness turns to joy, sadness to despair, anger to fury.  That was absolutely genuine and illuminated further the strains of Lexi’s words to Stefan when they first met.

It also helps to explain Damon’s impulsivity – a vampire with a supernatural form of ADHD!

As for Damon, despite the bite – whether it’s a wolf bite from Tyler or something else courtesy of Klaus – Damon is going to survive.    He will drink some of Elijah’s elixir – the one with the mystical resuscitation properties – or he will rub some on the bite, and he will be fine.

I believe the bite came from Tyler, and I strongly believe that Tyler is an alpha wolf.  That gives Tyler special supernatural properties, and it would make a bite from him different than a bite from a garden variety werewolf.  Maybe an alpha-wolf’s bite is cured with the blood of another wolf!

Or, there is no bite.  What we all see (including the characters) is the result of a suggestion implanted into everyone’s consciousness by Greta – or another witch hanging around someplace.  I think Klaus may have a posse of witches!

In any case, Damon will live.  If the bite is real, he may descend into madness, and that may be an experience that results in enormous emotional growth for him.  But he is not going to die.

The writers will come up with something.  They are so incredibly clever at finding ways to bring dead characters back to life, nothing would surprise me.

And I don’t believe Elena will turn into a vampire – at least not this Season.  If Elena is not dead within 24 hours of taking in Damon’s blood, it will wear off and she will be fine.

There are only two episodes left.  And there are so many dangling threads.

  • Will Damon survive his wolf bite or will facing his death bring the redemption he so desperately desires?
  • Will Jenna actually turn into a vampire or will she die in the ritual?
  • Or will John Gilbert sacrifice his own life to save Jenna and Elena?
  • Will Elena be sacrificed and turn into a vampire or will something or someone intervene?
  • If Elena turns into a vampire, and Damon lives, will she forgive him?
  • What will Elijah, Katherine, Damon, Stefan, Tyler, Matt, Caroline, and/or Jeremy try to do?
  • Will Bonnie’s strength be strong enough to kill Klaus during his transformation – and will she survive?
  • And what about all those Original family members?

One last thought.   I absolutely love what Joseph Morgan does with Klaus.  Clearly he is a sociopath, but Morgan plays him with some humor.  And when he smiles that impish grin, I can’t help but be reminded of the character Puck in Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, a mischievous imp.

A cold-blooded, demonic, murderous vampire with a smile like an imp?  Deliciously terrifying!

You’re As Good As Dead – Recap

by Cathy on April 29, 2011

Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Klaus Elijah came back to life, Elena formed a new alliance with Elijah, we learned that Elijah and Klaus are brothers, the sun and the moon curse doesn’t exist, Klaus is a half vampire half werewolf, and the real curse he’s trying to break is the curse that was put on him.

This week episode, The Last Day, is about the events that leading up to the sacrifice ritual that Klaus has been waiting for a thousand year.

Elijah’s plan:
In the last episode, we learned from Elijah that he had found a way to save the doppleganger after the sacrifice. He had wanted to save Katherine 500 years ago, but Katherine fled and turned herself into a vampire before the sacrifice could happen. Elijah’s plan is to use a potion that has mystical powers of resuscitation on Elena. During Full Moon, the witch will channel the power of the moon to break the curse that binds in the moonstone. Klaus will then sacrifice a vampire and a werewolf. As a final part of the sacrifice, Klaus will drink the blood of the doppleganger until the point of her death. But, if Elena had drank the potion from Elijah, she can come back to life.

Of course, there are risks to that. Elijah doesn’t know for sure that the potion would work. There is a chance that Elena can really die.

The Gilbert Ring:
The Gilbert ring protects human from being killed by a supernatural being. Damon suggests that Elena wear the Gilbert ring before the sacrifice, so she can really come back to life. We know the Gilbert ring works. It’s fool proof. But, Elijah points out that dopplegangers are a supernatural occurrence, so it’s very possible that the ring won’t work on Elena. This concept is interesting to me. Elena is human. She’s one hundred percent human, but because she’s a doppleganger; it also makes her a supernatural being. It’s kind of like a hybrid in a way. Half human, half supernatural being. Is this the reason why a doppleganger is involved in the sacrifice to break the curse on Klaus?

Tyler’s Return:
Klaus’s Man Witch makes Mrs. Lockwood calls Tyler and tell him to come home. She tells him that she was in a hospital. Man Witch attacks Mrs. Lockwood and she really ends up in the hospital. Tyler does come home to see his mother and falls right in the trap Klaus set up for him.

Damon’s Screw-Up:
There is a sweet moment between Damon and Elena when he tells her that he can’t lose her. The moment was short lived when Damon acts on his impulse and fed his blood to Elena. This is an impulsive decision on Damon’s part and he’s being completely selfish, but I know that he truly believes this was the only way to keep her alive. He loves Elena so much that he would do anything to keep her, even if it means that she’d be a vampire.

Damon then realizes that he screwed up, so he tries to fix it. He asks Klaus if he’s willing to postpone the ritual until the next full moon. Klaus refuses and warns Damon not to screw it up for him. Of course, Damon being Damon plans to take Klaus’ werewolf out of the equation, so the ritual couldn’t happen tonight. Again, Damon’s risking his life to protect the love of his life.

A Vampire and A Werewolf:
Klaus’ vampire and werewolf he’s planning to use are Caroline and Tyler. Man Witch attacks Caroline and Tyler outside the hospital and brings them to the tomb. While they are both in the tomb, Caroline and Tyler get a chance to catch up and forgive each other.

The Talk:
Normal teenage couples have “the talk” about sex. Stefan and Elena on the other hand, have “the talk” about becoming a vampire. Stefan takes Elena on a hiking trip and it gives Elena a chance to ask questions to Stefan about the good and bad things about becoming a vampire. Once they get to the top of a mountain, Elena finally admits to Stefan that she doesn’t want to become a vampire. She wants to grow old, have a life, and have choices. I’m glad to hear Elena says these things. This is how the normal seventeen year old girl should feel.

Matt, The Hero:
Matt saves Damon’s life in this episode. If it wasn’t for him, Man Witch could have killed Damon when Damon tries to save Caroline and Damon. It looks like Matt isn’t working with Sheriff Forbes anymore. He’s started to see that even though Caroline is a vampire, she’s still Caroline. I think Matt is definitely coming around to the idea of dating a vampire. I really hope so because they are so cute together.

OMG Moments:

  • Damon gets bitten by Tyler. This is what I was afraid of since Rose got bitten by Jules. I was afraid Damon would be next. But, Tyler wasn’t fully transformed yet when he bit Damon so is it really fatal? Maybe Bonnie can do a spell to cure Damon.
  • Klaus makes Katherine calls Jenna to lure her out and he turns Jenna into a vampire. Why Jenna? Is it because Alaric invited Damon into the house? Is it Klaus’ revenge on Alaric?

This is a bad cliffhanger. I cannot wait until next Thursday. Jenna’s fate is hanging by the threat; along with Elena’s, Damon’s, and Tyler’s.

There you have it folks – from a man who should know. Right? Just one problem. This “man” is both a vampire and a werewolf, so presumably what he says next is true too – at least for him.

Klaus: “And we are not weak, Elijah. We do not feel and we do not care.”

Ah, there’s the rub, because devoted viewers of this show know, vampires do feel and they do care.

Stefan’s friend, Lexi, told us the truth about vampires in “The Dinner Party”.

Lexi: “Love, Stefan. That’s the point.”

Stefan had been using the dying men in the triage as a source of blood to feed his cravings. In order to feed, he felt it was necessary to shut out his emotions. But Lexi made him face his emotions. She let him know that while it may be difficult at first…

Lexi: “Once you can hurt, you can love.”

It is not that vampires have no feelings – it’s that all their feelings – both pain and pleasure – are intensified. So as Lexi said, when they hurt, they really hurt, but…

Lexi: When we love…”

We can’t choose what we feel – that’s the tough part about emotions. In order to feel love, we must also feel pain.

I believe that what Klaus says is true for him. He doesn’t feel and he doesn’t care. Whether this is because he is a hybrid, or because he’s been repressing his emotions for a thousand years, or because he’s fooling himself is unclear.

It is also possible that his thousand year quest for the elements to end his curse, and his desire for power, have indeed - as Elijah suggests – driven him mad.

But for Elijah, feelings remain.

We see it when he regains consciousness in the Salvatore’s house and thinks he is looking into the face of Katerina Petrova.

Elijah had feelings for this woman back in 1491. It is plain in the look on his face when he first sets eyes on her at his brother’s birthday celebration. He even says so.

Elijah: “You remind me of someone”.

And his smile is full of warmth and remembrance.

We also see a glimmer of recognition on Klaus’ face when he first sees Katerina from across the room. But Klaus’s smile is not warm. It looks more like smug satisfaction.

Who is the woman that Katerina reminds them of – a former lover? Is this history repeating - two brothers, falling for the same woman, losing her and chasing her across the centuries? At this point, we don’t know.

What we do know is that Elijah, unlike his half-brother, has not lost his capacity to feel emotions. It is his emotions that have driven him to find a way to protect Katerina – the doppelganger – while still allowing Klaus to break the curse.

But Klaus won’t risk it. He accuses his brother of “falling in love” as if it were a death sentence.

Klaus: “Love is a vampire’s greatest weakness. And we are not weak, Elijah.  We do not feel and we do not care.”

That may be the way Klaus views love, but it does not apply to Elijah. He carries a torch.  He remembers.

Elijah: “We did once.”

And I believe that the reason Elijah treats Elena with deference and trust is because Elena reminds him of the Katerina he first met.  Or the woman Katerina reminds him of.

Katerina: “True love is not real unless it is returned.”

Elijah replies that he doesn’t believe in love, but contradicts his statement with a subtle look – a memory he is reliving – or a feeling he is having in the moment. Katerina doesn’t appear to apprehend the look, but her next statement is a key to the woman she was then.

Katerina: “If we cease to believe in love, why would we want to live?”

Elijah may have fallen in love with that Katerina. But once she discovered Klaus’ true intentions, Katerina appeared to take on Klaus’ perspective. She abandoned her feelings in order to survive.

And Elijah will not make the mistake of trusting her again. Falling in love with her nearly got him killed at his brother’s hands when Klaus discovered Katerina is a vampire and can no longer be used as the doppelganger to help him break his curse.

For Elijah, Elena represents the nobler characteristics of the original Katerina. And he relates to her on that basis. Whatever he discovered in 1491 that would have protected Katerina will work on Elena now.

For some, it is almost irresistible to compare these two love stories, and many people would draw parallels between the two sets of brothers – Damon to Klaus, and Elijah to Stefan.

I disagree. I think those pairings are wrong.

Elijah is not like Stefan – he is like Damon – pining for a woman he cannot have, wanting his human feelings back because he misses them, yet guarding himself against their pain.

I can see the obvious similarities between Damon and Klaus – the “loose canon” aspects. But Klaus is a cold-blooded killer and there is nothing human about him – whereas Damon longs to be the human he once was, so he is moved by nobler – albeit misguided – motives.

I’m not buying the match-ups of Elijah-Stefan vs. Damon-Klaus. There is far more similarity between Damon and Elijah. They are both noble men…

…Stefan is simply romantic.

One more observation about love. It was said by Andie to Damon.

Andie: Love does that Damon – it changes us.”

Klaus has no love in his life. He ceased to be human centuries ago and has remained unchanged for 1000 years – unchanged in his single-minded search for the elements needed to break his curse, unchanged in his lust for power, unchanged in his hatred for his brother and anyone else who gets in his way.

But Damon’s love for Elena has changed him. When he first came back to Mystic Falls, he was much more Klaus-like. He was single-minded in his pursuit of mayhem with the sole of purpose of making his brother’s life miserable.

His love for Elena has moved him to allow emotions back into his life and take on a horrible struggle with them in order to protect her.

I believe Elijah’s feelings are genuine. I believe he will protect Elena. And I believe it because, like Damon, Elijah is a noble man. I trust him.

For all of us, love is not a weakness. It is a strength. We are all capable of great things done in love. Sometimes, love hurts. But ultimately, the pain is worth it.

“As food is needed for the body, the same way love is needed for the soul. Food strengthens the body while love strengths the soul. A person is incomplete without love.” Unknown
