2.09 – Katerina

How Katerina became Katherine

by Stefi on February 7, 2011

I’m the last person in the world to ever defend Katherine, and the last person to speak on her behalf. She’s mean. She thinks only of herself. She will do anything necessary to save herself, including using, cheating and killing people. We got to know Katherine in the first half of Season 2 pretty well and maybe we liked what we saw in terms of a great villain for the show. Nina Dobrev is great as Katherine, but Katherine is not a character you would feel sympathy for…until 2.09 – Katerina.

The short story is: Katerina had a baby out of wedlock (“Shame, my indiscretions were not tolerated at that time”), and had to give it up, then fled to England where she caught the eye of a nobleman named Klaus. How she left and how she met Klaus is not entirely clear, we know she pretty soon had to run away from him because of the whole doppelganger thing to save her life. And Trevor, another one of her love victims, helped her to escape, dragging Rose down with him. I always wondered how Katherine was turned. I was convinced Klaus did it but Katherine turned Katherine. That’s just like her. No hesitation, take actions, do whatever it takes. “Better I die than you”.

Self preservation always was the biggest character line of Katherine, but we’ve seen shreds of Katherine’s humanity. For example, the crying when they took her baby, begging just to see her, to hold her in her arms only once.  And the emotional pain when she came home and found her entire family slaughtered.

And so of course she had to toughen up. She lost everything, was all alone, had nobody to turn to, nobody to lean on. Maybe she took the “tough up” part to a new level, but still, she had to do what she had to do.

Yes, she hurt a lot of people during her self preservation efforts. And yes, I believe we will see more of Katherine’s heartless, cruel actions, but two things make me hope there is still some humanity and some goodness left in her. The obvious sadness when she looked at her family’s portrait at the end of 2.09 – Katerina, and, as Elijah cleverly put it, the good sense to be afraid at the end of last episode.

To keep Elena safe is exactly what Elijah wants… but why?  Many theories come to mind and here are a few of them.

Elijah wants to turn her in to Klaus for himself.—He could want all the credit and glory for turning her in being as he is the vampire that seemed to be leading the hunt for her in the chase through the forest (episode 2.9: Katerina). Maybe he isn’t running from Klaus’s wrath like Rose, Trevor, and Katherine are but my guess is that him coming back empty handed didn’t exactly award him a gold star in Klaus’s eyes. Perhaps he has been waiting for the right opportunity to regain his high standing (assuming he had one).

However, Damon was the only one standing in his way from taking Elena right then and there in episode2. 10: The Sacrifice… as much as we all like Damon, we know that the older a vampire is, the more powerful they are, and as Elijah is older than even Katherine and he is one of the originals… we don’t have much confidence that Damon would win the fight… so if Elijah’s only reason for keeping Elena safe is to take the credit himself, he could have easily defeated Damon and surrendered her over to Klaus at that moment.

Elijah wants to break the spell himself. Elijah could just want to skip all the chain of command nonsense and do the thing himself. He has all the ingredients practically in his palm: The Petrova doppelganger, a witch (or several), and the moonstone. He knows where all of them are (except the moonstone but his confidence proves that he doesn’t deem that task difficult) and he could easily try and break the curse himself.

But the point of breaking the curse is so that the werewolves are forever trapped under their own curse right? So what advantage would Elijah have in breaking that curse himself… no matter who broke it: Elijah, Klaus, heck even Katherine; wouldn’t it all end up with the same outcome: vampires win, werewolves lose.  Him keeping Elena safe so that he can do it himself seems a bit impractical because although breaking the curse on his own could give him some brownie points to the head honcho, Klaus doesn’t really seem like he’d be a grateful kind of guy…Klaus would most likely take this move as a power play… which actually may be what it is. Breaking the curse may not only score the eternal win for the vampires, it could also make the curse-breaker the ultimate vampire…

Elijah is in love with Katherine and/or Elena: Katherine has sunk her fangs into a lot of the men on this show and Elijah may not be an exception. Trevor may not have been the only vampire before the Salvatore drama came into play to have been in love with our dearest Katerina and his infatuation with her could have reflected onto Elena for being her spitting image.

Sadly, Elijah doesn’t seem like the romantic type.  If he really did think he was in love with Elena, it seems that it would be the sick, “Fatal Attraction” type… either would definitely not end well for Elena.

The Vampire Diaries’ writers have never disappointed us and have hardly ever revealed all there is to know about a certain curse or plot curve ball in a single episode, but if there is one thing they have revealed is that they love to keep us guessing. Whatever reason for keeping her safe, Damon and Stefan should be grateful… for now.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIESEpisode 2.09, “Katerina”, was chock full of information about Katherine’s past.  And it provided many more details on the “Curse of the Sun and the Moon” too.

But for me, it also raised a lot of new questions.  Things have gotten very complex, so I decided to diagram the current situation and then go back in time to see if I could make sense of it, and have some of my questions answered.

And my biggest questions involve the origins and significance of the Petrova Doppelganger.

Based on what has been revealed about “The Curse of the Sun and the Moon”, we know that the curse was bound by a moonstone and Petrova blood.  We also know that the doppelganger was created as a way to break the curse.  So the blood of a Petrova doppelganger is they key to breaking the curse – along with a witch, a werewolf, a vampire and the moonstone.

We also know that if the werewolves break the curse first, the vampires will still be cursed by the sun – and vice versa.  If the vampires break the curse first, the werewolves will still be cursed by the moon.

We have seen Katherine bring together the ingredients necessary to break the spell.  She turned Caroline, she orchestrated Tyler’s transformation, she kept tabs on the Bennett witches (possibly since 1490, but definitely since at least 1692, when Emily Bennett left Salem, MA and showed up in Mystic Falls, VA with Katherine at the Salvatore Boarding House.)  And we know that she stole the moonstone from Klaus in 1492, carried it with her to America, and gave it to George Lockwood in 1864, before using Mason Lockwood to regain its possession.

But how did she track down the Petrova doppelganger, Elena?

I don’t think Katherine tracked Elena down at all.  I think she actually helped to create Elena.

Katherine did not just show up in Mystic Falls, VA.  I believe she has been tracking her ancestors ever since her daughter was born in 1490.

Katherine is a very smart woman.  When she found out what Klaus wanted with her, she made her escape withthe moonstone.  She also made sure that she would be of no use to Klaus as a human Petrova doppelganger by turning herself into a vampire.  She knows that the Petrova doppelganger is an integral component of breaking the curse, and she has the moonstone.  If she can find – or make – another Petrova doppelganger, she can bargain with Klaus.

So she goes in search of her daughter.  She returns from England to Bulgaria, presumably to speak to her father.  He is the one who took her baby from her when she was born.  Unfortunately, Klaus beats her to Bulgaria and kills her entire family – everyone except her daughter.  Klaus doesn’t know Katerina has a daughter.  He continues to pursue her.

Somewhere between 1492 and 1692, Katherine leaves Europe and comes to America.  This may be because the family who took her baby girl went there.  We know she lived in Massachusetts because that is where she saved Emily’s life – presumably keeping Emily from suffering the fate of the Salem witches in 1692.  Katherine and Emily leave Massachusetts – we do not know when they leave or where they go, but we can assume they did not stay in a place hostile to witches.

Around 1864, Katherine and Emily arrive in Mystic Falls, VA.  There they encounter the Founding Families, who hate vampires and want to wipe them out.

Nothing Katherine does is an accident.  She is very deliberately tracking her daughter and her daughter’s ancestors.  This takes her from Europe, to Massachusetts, to Virginia.

Before the families round up all the vampires, Katherine gives the moonstone to George Lockwood and tells him “Don’t disappoint me”.  The fact that she gives the moonstone to a Lockwood means that Katherine knows that the Lockwoods carry the werewolf curse.  She may have learned this while she was still in Europe, since werewolves are very much a part of European folklore.  The Lockwoods become the guardians of the moonstone until Katherine tricks Mason into retrieving it for her in 2010.

It also means that Katherine was aware of what the Founding Families were up to and intended to make it look as if she was going into the church to be entombed and burned with the other captured vampires.  But Katherine is always a step ahead of everyone, and she always has a Plan B.   She is able to plan her escape.

Between 1864 and 2010, Katherine probably never ventured too far from Mystic Falls, at least not for very long.   We know she has been successful tracking her daughter’s ancestors because eventually, she meets Isobel.

Isobel was born and raised in Virginia, but Katherine does not actually meet her until she is a student at Duke University in North Carolina.  Isobel was there studying the supernatural.  We don’t know whether this interest, or her meeting with Katherine, gives her the desire to be turned into a vampire.  We do know that she succeeds in convincing Damon to turn her.

But Katherine did not arrive in Mystic Falls, and she did not stay near Mystic Falls, simply to track the distaff side of the Petrova doppelganger heritage.  In order to create a doppelganger, you also need someone from the father’s line.  Katherine deliberately came to Mystic Falls because that is where the family of the Petrova doppelganger’s father has settled.  He is a member of one of the Founding Families.

He is Jonathan Gilbert.  And in about 100 years, Katherine will be involved in the relationship between Isobel Fleming and John Gilbert – a relationship that produced a Petrova doppelganger – Elena Gilbert.

Why?  Because it was a relationship between a Petrova and a Gilbert who produced the first Petrova doppelganger – Katerina.  Katerina’s father was not the man who so callously gave away her baby girl.  Her true father was a Gilbert.

The name Gilbert is of English origin.  Ever wonder why Katerina left Bulgaria and went to England?  When she was banished, she was sent there – possibly to the home of her true father.  She may have sought his aid to get her daughter back.  While she was looking, Klaus found her – and we know where that story goes.

John Gilbert is Elena’s father, and Isobel Flemming – a direct Petrova ancestor – is Elena’s mother.  I do not believe that these two came together by accident.  I believe their meeting was deliberately arranged by Katherine in order to produce a Petrova doppelganger.

Katherine has been running from Klaus for over 500 years.  It appears that Klaus has finally caught up to her.  But as usual, Katherine is one step ahead of everyone.

We have watched her deliberately and methodically bring all the necessary ingredients together to break the curse; the vampire, Caroline; the werewolf, Tyler; the moonstone, and we know she has maintained her connections with the witch community.

But 18 years ago, she was responsible for the creation of the Petrova doppelganger – Elena.  This is the key to breaking the curse.

Only time will tell if she has stayed one step ahead of Klaus and his vengeance.

Who should Bonnie choose?

by Veronica on November 29, 2010

THE VAMPIRE DIARIESIt really seemed that Jeremy would finally get the girl until the mysterious Luka came into the picture… but who is the actual better choice for Bonnie?

Bonnie has known Jeremy Gilbert for years. She’s known him as Elena’s little brother though and that must be a pretty hard transition to make when your best friend’s little brother grows up. Bonnie and Elena are pretty close, like sisters therefore Bonnie is probably accustomed to seeing Jeremy like a little brother as well. So Jeremy being attracted to her (and my guess is attractive to her as well) probably comes as a pretty big shock. Is Bonnie really going to want to jeopardize her already fragile relationship with Elena by dating her younger brother? Not that Elena would mind, but what if something happens? If he breaks her heart or vice versa, it could prove to be a problem especially when they have already been so close (platonically) in the past. But c’mon Bonnie! Cut poor Jeremy some slack. He’s a really caring person and not to mention easy on the eyes and poor guy has been through the ringer with his luck in woman what with Vickie turning into a vampire then being staked and then Anna who is a vampire and… wait a minute…then again looking at his track record, maybe Bonnie should be a little more careful when it comes to dating Jeremy…

Then there is Luka, the new guy in town. Bonnie feels pretty alone as she’s expressed before and now Luka [comes off like] he knows what she goes through. Let’s not forget that Bonnie has no fellow witches to empathize with and now this new (cute) guy in town can totally relate to her. She may not have noticed how cute he was what with Jeremy getting all the attention but as soon as he mentioned just how much they had in common, she’s definitely noticing now. And the new guy appeal can’t hurt either; he knows nothing of the past and knows nothing of the vampire drama (or does he??) so he is like getting a fresh start or even a separation from that part of her life. However, as we saw towards the end of the “Katerina” episode, Luka’s father seems to be in cahoots with Elijah. Could Luka be aware of his father’s intentions or is he as clueless as the rest of them?

Bonnie could prove to ditch both of those guys and go with somebody else totally unexpected… Is it just me or is there chemistry between Bonnie and Damon??? Now, now, hear me out. They both hate each other but isn’t it a common saying that there is only a fine line between hate and love (I actually think our beloved Katherine says that ;) )??? When those two are snapping at each other, I hope I’m not the only one who notices a little hidden spark there…

Whoever Bonnie decides to go for though, I’m sure will involve an exciting twist in the story… (my vote totally goes for Bonnie and Damon :P )

A Glimmer of Hope from Katherine’s Past

by Emilia on November 21, 2010

Hopefully lots of people agree with me when I say that when I watched the episode “Katerina”, it was the first time that I actually felt bad for Katherine.  The Katherine flashbacks gave us first insight into the person she was as a human, and why she has become the person that she now is.

This episode was so crucial because it showed us Katherine as a human, a regular person living in society and being a part of a family. It showed us that even the most horrible of vampires most likely had a somewhat humble life at some point in time.  As was very true during Katherine’s human life (even up until recent history), having children out of wedlock was very much looked down upon and considered shameful. As most mother’s do, she wanted to see her baby even if only for a second, and my feeling bad for her kicked in when she was ultimately told “no”. As a viewer, I sympathized with her even more when I found out not only was her baby given away, but she was also sent away by her family. No baby, no family. Salt in the wound. She probably thought that things were looking up for herself when she met Klaus, but then realized what he was really after: killing the Petrova doppleganger. More salt in the wound. From what the episode showed us, Katherine didn’t appear to be very selfish until the very end of her human life. She used Trevor and Rose to save herself from sacrifice, and has used people ever since to keep herself alive. And although a part of me wants to hate Katherine for the initial selfishness, can we really blame her? I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone, but I wouldn’t want to be sacrificed to break a curse either. She has harmed people along the way, but now we know it is for her own survival (instead of simply “just because”) which I think most of us can understand in varying degrees. This episode definitely helped humanize Katherine.

Assuming this is all true, could Katherine possible lighten up a bit if Klaus and the Originals were no longer a threat? Could she possibly be the person that she was when she just wanted to see her baby girl? There is a glimmer of hope that Katherine could be a better person, like she used to be. I think it would be awesome if she would side with the Salvatores and fight Klaus together which may free Katherine . . . from herself. What do you think?

It’s really getting crowded in Mystic Falls.   And complicated.

This curse of the Sun and the Moon stuff – all the information surrounding it – is making my head explode.  It’s a lot to keep track of, and frankly, I am now watching TVD with notebook and pen in hand!

I think I get most of it.  The original curse causes limitations on both vampires and werewolves.  Vampires can only come out at night (unless they have a certain charm that allows them to walk around in the sun).   Werewolves are limited to a single night of full power during a full moon.

And it appears that in order to break the curse – at least if you are a vampire – you need the moonstone, another vampire, a werewolf, a witch and some very specific blood – from the Petrova doppelganger.

This is not your regular, everyday, run-of-the-mill, teenage problem, people.  Let’s not forget, this is a show about kids in high school.   We never had problems like this when I was in high school!  But we did have problems – not so different from teenagers today.

And that brings me to how interesting it is to me that each of these mythical creatures represents “teenage angst” in one form or another so very well.

I beg your indulgence here – this is nostalgic for me.   I am 57 years old so it’s been a while since I was a teenager.  Certain things about the experience I remember vividly – other things, I’d honestly rather forget.

Vampires strike me as the kids who wanted power but were passive-aggressive about it.  In fact, Damon kind of reminds me of “Eddie Haskell” on “Leave It to Beaver”.  I don’t know if you remember this show, or have even seen it (do they show it on TVLand?) but Eddie Haskell was a rascal.  He was as polite at they come with an adult around (“That’s a lovely dress you’re wearing, Mrs. Cleaver.”) but once they turned their backs, he was a nasty punk.  The kind of kid who’d trip you as you walked down the hall and then stand there leaning against the wall with an innocent look on his face.   They tend to be loners, for obvious reasons.

There are female “Eddie Haskells” too.  They put on a polite, mature face when adults are around, but otherwise, they are controlling, as only girls can be.  Like Katherine, cross them, and they will make sure your life miserable.  They won’t “kill your whole family and everyone you care about” – but they can destroy friendships and leave you isolated.  They are the “Mean Girls” who never grew out of the power trip of “I won’t be your friend anymore.”

Werewolves are the jocks.  All physical.  Some of them actually have “anger-management” issues, and athletics is a good place to channel all that negative energy.  Although the stereotype is that they are often not too bright, I don’t believe they are any less intelligent than any other type of kid – they’ve just got all that physical energy and they are bursting with it.  Hard to pick up a book and sit quietly and read or study when you’ve got that much energy flowing through you.  Unfortunately, they only get a few opportunities to actually let that energy out.  Games usually only happen once a week.  (Werewolves only get one night a month!)  I’m in Texas, so I’m thinking football here, but it could be basketball or baseball – there’s always a sport in any season!  Still, the games are weekly – the rest of the time, if you’re not in practice, you have to find a way to control that energy, and that usually doesn’t happen.  The energy manifests itself in all kinds of inappropriate ways.  (Picture Tyler kicking the trash can!)

Witches (and probably Warlocks) are the oddballs.  When I was in school, these were the kids who were “sensitive” or “artistic” or often just “brilliant”.  Well, I recognize that now.  Back when I was in school, I’m sure I thought they were just weird.  It took me 6 years in the advertising industry to recognize that people who are highly creative see the world in a much different way than most people.  And most people have no idea what they are talking about.  So they label them as oddballs, or eccentric, or weird.  It’s a shame really, because these are the people who come to the table with solutions to problems by virtue of the fact that they don’t see the world the way the rest of us do.  They see the possibilities. Unfortunately, they are often mistreated – teased – bullied.  Some are strong enough to ignore that and keep on going.  Others – often those without a support network – decide they will never fit in and can’t face life on those terms.

But in Mystic Falls, I don’t think our “teenage misfits” have to worry about support networks.  What I really like is how they have all come together to face this curse crisis.

Damon and Stefan are getting along, and Damon seems to have embraced Rose (literally and figuratively).  Caroline is relating to Damon in a whole new way now that she’s not just a ditz!  And she’s even buddying up with Stefan.  Caroline is also becoming a close friend to Tyler, and lord knows this kid needs a friend!  Even Bonnie – ever wary of vampires – has been more willing to become an ally of Stefan, Damon and Caroline.  Tyler has opened up to Caroline , and Caroline has been very kind to him.  Jeremy has stepped up his game to a whole new level.  He started out as something of a drugged out lost boy, and he’s turning into a mighty warrior.

And all this is because they are rallying around Elena.  I had a friend like Elena in school.  She was pretty, smart, kind, and talented in many different areas.  And very independent.  But I am sure if she ever gave a hint that she needed help, all the vampires, werewolves, witches and warlocks that I went to school with would have ignored their differences and rallied around her in a New York minute.

Yes, it’s getting crowded and complicated in Mystic Falls, but something tells me these kids can handle it.

Previously on the Vampire Diaries: we met some new vampires – Trevor, Rose, and Elijah; Bonnie helped Stefan and Jeremy find Elena; Jeremy and Bonnie spent some time together; Caroline and Tyler shared secrets; Damon told Elena he loves her and then erased her memory; and Elijah survived Damon’s stake.

This week episode, Katerina, is all about Katherine’s family history.  How is Elena connected to Katherine? How did Katherine become a vampire? What is Katherine running from? All these questions were answered in this episode.

How Elena is connected to Katherine:
Katherine had a baby in 1490. It was a girl and because she had a child out of wedlock, Katherine’s parents disowned her. The baby was taken away from Katherine and was probably given up for adoption. During the scene where the newborn baby was taken away from Katherine, the woman said it is better for her that she’s being taken away from the Patrova family. Did they know about the curse then, and Katherine didn’t? Katherine’s the first Patrova doppelganger.  Was her family aware of the curse, and how it is linked to the Patrova blood? Maybe that’s the reason why Katherine’s parents took her baby away and wrote in the family history that the Patrova bloodline ended with Katherine. They were trying to protect their family from Klaus. They wanted the Patrova bloodline to continue.

How Katherine became a vampire:
Rose inadvertently turned Katherine into a vampire. Katherine killed herself when she had Rose’s blood in her system. She didn’t care that her decisions and actions were going to cause danger for Rose and Trevor. All she cared about was her safety. She learned to look out for herself when Klaus killed her entire family. She knew that he will get revenge on her, too so she’s been running from him since 1492. That’s why she faked her own death in 1864. She wanted Klaus and the original vampires to know that she died. Her plan didn’t really work out, thanks to Damon.

Bonnie and Jeremy – unlikely pair:
I don’t know about you, but I don’t see these two together as a couple. The past couple of episodes have been slowly building up the relationship between Bonnie and Jeremy. In my opinion, the only thing they have in common is the fact that they both love Elena and would do anything to protect her. Jeremy needs a nice, normal, human girl who is going to make him happy and take him away from all the “emo” stuff (nicely put, aunt Jenna.).

Rose and Damon – sex heals pain:
Rose is mourning the death of her best friend. Damon is nursing a heartbreak. They are also working toward a common goal. How can they not turn to each other for comfort and support? Even though I like Rose’s character, I don’t see any chemistry between her and Damon. Not after Damon heart-wrenchingly confessed his love to Elena and that single tear drop. How can I ever see him with another woman?

Elena and Stefan – soul mates or lost souls?
Are they back together? Are they not back together? They break up and make up numerous times in the series thus far. It’s kind of frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of Elena and Stefan. But how many times are they going to break up before they both realize they can’t live without each other? Elena had already bind herself to Stefan by having him drink her blood. Her blood makes him stronger. That’s probably the most romantic thing she could ever do for him. In return, Stefan would fight until he died to protect Elena. He would do anything, if it means Elena is safe.

On the other hand, how can they stay together when she’s human and he’s a vampire. She would grow old. He won’t. It would never work. And then there’s insecurities that Stefan has about Damon. Stefan knows his brother is in love with the same girl he was in love with. Right now he’s insecure that Elena would turn to Damon for support. Stefan doesn’t want Damon to come in between him and Elena. He also doesn’t want Elena to come in between him and Damon.

A New Kid on the Block:
Luka Martin… the new student at Mystic Falls high school. He automatically caught Bonnie’s eye. Luka is not just a normal kid. He can’t be. No one comes to Mystic Falls without having an agenda. Luka has a dad named, Jonas. I already know I’m not going to like this guy as soon as he brought up Salem witches. Then, Bonnie had a weird look when she touched Luka. The kind of look she has when she feels something bad.

It turned out that Luka and Jonas are warlocks. Nice magic trick with salt, Luka but I’m not buying it. I don’t think the Martins are warlocks or witches. I think the Martins are some of the original vampires. They are working together with Elijah. If they were real warlocks/witches, why couldn’t they lift the curse of the sun and the moon? Why did Elijah compel Slater to tell Rose to get the moonstone and the witch? Luka and Jonas have to be vampires, some of the originals. The original vampires have special abilities. Elijah was able to compel another vampire. Maybe Luka’s special ability is to move or levitate objects with his hand. And maybe, Klaus can read minds. Edward Cullen, anyone?

How to Lift the Curse of the Moonstone:
According to Katherine, you need the moonstone, the Patrova doppelganger, a vampire, a witch, and a werewolf in order to lift the curse. They need to be sacrificed. No wonder Katherine was in need of a werewolf. Katherine’s diabolical plan to return to Mystic Falls is finally revealed. She came back to get the moonstone and Elena but Damon made sure to put some dents in her plan. Katherine was trying to negotiate with Klaus for her freedom. I guess she got tired of running after 500 years.

The December 2nd episode is going to be even more epic than this week episode. There are a few things we can anticipate.

  1. When is Tyler going to change?
  2. When is Klaus going to show up?
  3. Will Katherine ever get out of that tomb?
  4. Will Damon, Rose, and Stefan find another way to break the curse?

Is it December 2nd yet?
