*Cathy, the usual recap person, is out of town for two weeks so I had to take over the job of the recap. I hope I did her justice because I was not blessed with the gift of recap. Be kind!

The Pretext:
Katherine corners Caroline at the Grill, while she was there stalking Matt, so that she can pass a message on to the Salvatore brothers. Katherine wants the moonstone and she wants them to give it to her at the Masquerade Ball. Damon thinks it’s time for Katherine to die and says that he’s going to kill him. Stefan disagrees with him but not for the reason you might think; he disagrees because he wants to kill Katherine.
The Plan:
Stefan and Damon call a meeting of the gang (Caroline, Alaric, Bonnie and Jeremy) so they can plan out Katherine’s death. Alaric is there giving everyone a lesson on how to kill a vampire. Damon makes sure everyone is in because this plan can’t have anyone backing out. Jeremy is in because Elena doesn’t want him there or maybe because Katherine tried to kill his Aunt Jenna. Caroline is in because Katherine killed her. And Bonnie is in because…she’s not sure why, just as long as no one gets hurt.
The Opposition:
Katherine is gearing up for an evening of playing Elena Gilbert by straightening her hair and having some girl time with her “friend” Lucy. Katherine needs to get that moonstone and she needs Lucy’s help to break the curse which Lucy doesn’t really think is real.
The Masquerade:
Who throws parties like this? Anyhow, each person has a very specific job to do but they have to put the plan into motion first. Jeremy and Bonnie find a room to trap Katherine in so Bonnie can spell it where Katherine won’t be able to leave. Meanwhile, Katherine asks Stefan to dance, but he’s not interested so she lures him to dance by asking him who she should kill. Stefan agrees to dance and Katherine asks for the moonstone. He’s not giving it up and Katherine isn’t interested in playing any games. To prove her point, Katherine takes out Amy and literally drops her dead body in Stefan’s arms. “Paralyzed from the waist down…and now dead.”
Stefan doesn’t like what has happened and tells Damon they should call the plan off, but the game must go on. Damon sends Jeremy a text to start the ball in motion. Jeremy’s job is to make Katherine suspicious by telling her Stefan and Damon want to meet her by the lake to give her the moonstone. As planned, Katherine isn’t buying it and goes after Caroline to find out what is really going on. Katherine uses her power to pin Caroline against the wall to get the information she needs, but Caroline is giving her the information that is only helping out the players against her. She tells Katherine Bonnie has the moonstone and she’s upstairs, which is the room that Bonnie put a spell on. Caroline happily lures Katherine to the room where Stefan is waiting for her. When Katherine tries to leave, she can’t and Damon comes in ready to stake her.
The Obstacle:
Still wondering what Lucy had to do with this event? Lucy did a spell that would cause pain to Elena every time Katherine was struck. And Elena, she’s at the party after sneaking out of the house because she felt left out of everything going on. When the Salvatore brothers cause any pain to Katherine, Elena is feeling it, including the stake Damon put in Katherine’s back.
When Bonnie figures everything out, Jeremy goes upstairs to tell them what’s happening and they are forced to stop the plan.
Plan B and C:
Remember last week when Katherine compelled Matt to go after Tyler until he killed him? Matt is working that plan down in the study of the Lockwood home. Matt is drunk and is really trying to get Tyler to go after him. Tyler is trying not to get involved, but Matt takes it too far by pour tequila on Mayor Lockwood’s picture and insulting the deceased. They fight but Caroline comes in to break up the fight and she ends up pushing Matt really hard against the wall, but he’s not dead. But drunk girl Sarah starts talking “If Matt fails, I can’t” and she stabs Tyler who immediately reacts. He pushes Sarah, she hits her head on the desk and she’s dead. Tyler begins to make his transformation.
Unfortunate Events (for Katherine):
Bonnie knows another witch is at the party after Elena starts to feel Katherine’s pain. Bonnie goes looking for Lucy and she finds out more than what she bargained. Lucy makes it clear that she doesn’t want to fight with Bonnie. Lucy is there to return a favor, Katherine saved her life and she’s there to repay her debt. Lucy tells Bonnie that she will break the spell when Bonnie hands over the moonstone. Bonnie won’t give it up but she can’t shake the feeling that she knows Lucy. Come to find out, Lucy and Bonnie are related (long lost cousins), that’s a sign that Bonnie can trust Lucy so she gives up the moonstone.
Lucy in turn gives the stone the Katherine but first she clarifies that her debt to Katherine ends when she hands over the stone. Katherine agrees but when she takes the stone, she is severely weakened and she looks dead. Lucy apologizes for her involvement and leaves. Lucy is tired of being controlled by vampires. Bonnie asks her how she can get out of the middle of this mess, but Lucy tells her she is one of the good ones and she needs to be in the middle of it.
The Fallout:
Katherine wakes up but she’s in a tomb and can’t get out. Damon is standing by ready to close to door. Katherine wonders why they didn’t just kill her and Damon says “death would have been too kind.” As he’s closing the door, Katherine is trying to get him to keep it open by saying that Elena is in danger. “She’s a doppelganger, she needs to be protected.” This doesn’t stop Damon because he says he will protect Elena then.
Stefan goes to Elena thinking everything would be ok between them, but it’s not. The end of Katherine doesn’t mean much to Elena because she wants to wake up knowing the people she loves are safe. She admits to loving Stefan, but she just can’t go there right now. She walks away going to her car, but she’s not safe. A masked man kidnaps Elena.
Sweet Moments:
Jeremy and Bonnie spent a lot of time together in this episode and Jeremy used every bit of time he could to get Bonnie’s attention. When waiting for the signal from Damon, Jeremy asks Bonnie to dance and she playfully declines. And after everything was said and done, Jeremy ends up giving Bonnie a ride home. Bonnie has taken notice that Jeremy has grown up and sparks could be flying between the two.
Caroline put Matt in a car to sleep his alcohol off and is trying to clean up Tyler’s Sarah mess. He wonders why she is being so nice to him and helping him out. She tells Tyler she understands what is going on with him, but he’s not really catching on. She’s really trying to help Tyler out. Could this be the beginning of Caroline and Tyler?

Smack Dab in the Middle: Where Bonnie Belongs

In Masquerade, Lucy says exactly what Bonnie is thinking, “Damn vampires! They pull you into the middle of it every time.” And while Bonnie thinks she has finally found a kindred spirit (in more ways than one) Lucy tells her she’s wrong—“The middle of it is exactly where you need to be.”
Lucy couldn’t be more right. Bonnie by nature of being a witch is already in the middle of these two worlds—supernatural and human. But a conscious choice to be in the middle of it, and to be one of the “good ones” in the middle of it, offers her a chance at control of her own life in the drama engulfing Mystic Falls.
Because Bonnie is a witch, her existence itself has her straddling the two worlds: the supernatural and human. While the vampires attempt to be human and the humans attempt to understand what it’s like to be a non-human, Bonnie is in a unique position with a unique perspective to understand the fragility of mortality, and yet the power of being different. The fact that she exists in both worlds offers her and the rest of the gang a unique voice on how to handle the fight ahead.
But probably more important than the unique perspective Bonnie brings to the group by being in the middle is the fact that such a position offers her a chance for control of her own fate. Ever since Grams died, Bonnie has felt out of control in her relationships and with her powers. She’s been the outsider. But even as she has tried to stay out of the fight, out of the drama, she gets pulled in every time. She even admits to Jeremy, “I don’t know how to stay out of it.”
If Bonnie makes the conscious choice now to be in the middle, she gets to make a choice about her involvement down the line. She has control of how her powers are used, unlike Lucy, and Emily before her, who was indebted to Katherine and whose powers were subject to Katherine’s whims. Clearly, it has been the Bennett witches’ fate to find themselves under the control of vampires for the last 145 years.
Smack dab in the middle, Bonnie has choices and the control that the rest of the Bennett witches haven’t been so lucky to have.
