Five Things About 2.01 – The Return

by Angela on September 10, 2010

The Return was a great return for The Vampire Diaries. IF this episode set the tone for season 2, fans are in for a long and bumpy ride. Many things happened throughout the episode including things we didn’t even suspect to happen…or even this soon. This episode was jam packed with vampire goodness and it’s just the beginning of the season. Here are five things you should know about 2.01 – The Return.

1. Katherine is back and she’s ready to play. Nina Dobrev is the bomb.com for pulling off the innocent Elena and the cold-hearted Katherine. It is amazing seeing the transformation from one character to the next. It’s more than just a wardrobe change that really makes THE difference.

Katherine is back to break hearts a long the way. She enjoys toying with Stefan who actually let himself get sucked in to her power. It’s a very Stefan thing to want to play along to get the details, but this time he got wrapped up in Katherine’s allure.

And then there’s Damon. “Kiss me or kill me? We both know you can only do one.” She knows those boys so well and the fact that she could manipulate Damon the way she did with just a few minutes of conversation shows the girl definitely has skill.

2. Damon doesn’t like to be rejected. First Damon finds out that it wasn’t Elena that he kissed and then Elena throws a big landmine on him. “I’m not surprised that you would kiss me. I’m surprised you thought I would kiss you back.” This sends Damon into a downward spiral. He thinks Elena is lying to herself and he knows there is something between them. But we have to back up to Katherine. When he wants to know the truth if Katherine really loved him, she hits him with another landmine. She tells Damon that she never loved him and it was always Stefan! Fast Forward: Damon tries to kiss Elena again but she’s fighting him off and tells Damon that she cares about him, but she loves Stefan. It’s always been Stefan.

This causes Damon to act out and cross the line. He walks up to Jeremy who is coming to the defense of his sister and snaps his neck. Luckily, Jeremy is wearing that ring that protects again supernatural forces. Why did Damon have to do that? Did he realize it was going to ruin everything he had built with Elena? There could have been the possibility that Damon and Elena could exist in the world of The Vampire Diaries. But with that move, he destroyed it all. Stefan thinks Damon knew Jeremy was wearing the ring. There is no way Damon knew though. Damon participates in destructive behavior when he’s upset and drunk; he doesn’t really care about the consequences. Maybe I’m wrong, but Damon intended to cause pain to Elena and killing her brother was a way to do it. Thank goodness for those little black and silver rings!

3. The Lockwood Curse. Tyler is still reeling from the death of his father while everyone else in the town is trying to figure out why Mayor Lockwood and Tyler were stunned by the vampire device. Enter Mason Lockwood, he’s not so bad on the eyes. I’m sorry I had to say that because in the end it’s probably going to make his character more likable. This is just the first episode back so we really didn’t find out much about the Lockwood curse, but we do know it’s something that needs to be tamed. My prediction: The Lockwoods are going to be a major part of season 2 and there is probably a Katherine connection here.

4. Character changes. Did you see Stefan slap Jeremy around like a rag doll? Did you see that mean look in Bonnie’s eyes? The acting has definitely stepped it up a notch this season and it’s great to see. Elena had to stop Stefan from crossing the line with Jeremy. He threatened Uncle John in the hospital with turning him into a vampire if he didn’t leave. And Katherine even noticed how Stefan was meaner since the last time she saw him. Will Stefan’s aggression play a big part in this season? And will it drive Elena and Stefan apart or bring them closer together?

Bonnie was ready to play this episode. She didn’t back down and really showed herself as a force in Mystic Falls. She used her powers to take on Damon and tried again on Katherine. It was kind of funny how Katherine fake reacted to Bonnie’s power and then popped right out of it. BUT Bonnie did use her power to open the door so she wouldn’t be alone. Bonnie is smart on her toes and is ready to rid Mystic Falls of the vampires.

5. Caroline is going vamp! This was the biggest shocker of the entire episode. Not something that was expected, especially in the first episode out of the gate. Caroline is a pawn in Katherine’s game. Katherine suffocates Caroline with a pillow in the hospital and Caroline dies with Damon’s blood in her system. Damon offered to share some of his blood to help her survive the accident. So now Caroline has gone vamp so what does that mean for her and Bonnie’s relationship? Will Bonnie end up killing Caroline? How will Caroline adjust to being a vampire and most importantly, how is she going to make the transition into full vampiredom?

Matt just can’t get ahead in the Mystic Falls game because now Caroline has suffered the same fate as his sister! How will Caroline fit in to everyone’s life now?

Side note:
- Jeremy woke up and that’s good news. If anyone in the Gilbert family turns, it should be Elena! This was a good decision for the writers to have Jeremy wake up HEALED from Anna’s blood and not turned.
- It kind of bugged me that people couldn’t recognize a difference in Elena. Everyone kept mistaken her for Katherine (and I know they weren’t looking for a different person) but someone commenting on her edgy clothing or the curly hair would have been a little funny.

KATHERINE HAS RETURNED WITH A VENGEANCE — Picking up on the same night as last season’s finale, Elena (Nina Dobrev) arrives home to a nightmare as she discovers Uncle John’s and Jeremy’s fate. At the hospital, Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) is comforted by Matt (Zach Roering), Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) while she waits to hear if Caroline (Candice Accola) will survive the car accident. After a confusing conversation with Elena about the night’s events, Damon is the first to realize that Katherine (also played by Nina Dobrev) has returned. Katherine’s arrival sends Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon on a path to find out what she wants, why she’s back, and how much of a threat she is to the people they love. Meanwhile, still reeling from his father’s death, Tyler (Michael Trevino) is surprised when his charming and mysterious uncle, Mason Lockwood (guest star Taylor Kinney, “Trauma”), arrives to console the family.

2.01 – The Return – Promo Pictures

by Angela on August 13, 2010

Ace Showbiz got some of the first promo pictures from season two of The Vampire Diaries.  These pictures come from the first episode entitled The Return.

The pictures show Damon and Stefan in a heated conversation and Elena (or could that be Katherine) helping Stefan with a in jury.  What could have happened to Stefan?  Also, there are pictures of Tyler.  He’s not really doing much but obviously something is going on with Tyler.

The days are ticking down to the season two premiere of The Vampire Diaries.  Don’t forget, September 9, 2010 at 8/7c on The CW.
