2.09 – Katerina
Previously on the Vampire Diaries: we met some new vampires – Trevor, Rose, and Elijah; Bonnie helped Stefan and Jeremy find Elena; Jeremy and Bonnie spent some time together; Caroline and Tyler shared secrets; Damon told Elena he loves her and then erased her memory; and Elijah survived Damon’s stake.
This week episode, Katerina, is all about Katherine’s family history. How is Elena connected to Katherine? How did Katherine become a vampire? What is Katherine running from? All these questions were answered in this episode.
How Elena is connected to Katherine:
Katherine had a baby in 1490. It was a girl and because she had a child out of wedlock, Katherine’s parents disowned her. The baby was taken away from Katherine and was probably given up for adoption. During the scene where the newborn baby was taken away from Katherine, the woman said it is better for her that she’s being taken away from the Patrova family. Did they know about the curse then, and Katherine didn’t? Katherine’s the first Patrova doppelganger. Was her family aware of the curse, and how it is linked to the Patrova blood? Maybe that’s the reason why Katherine’s parents took her baby away and wrote in the family history that the Patrova bloodline ended with Katherine. They were trying to protect their family from Klaus. They wanted the Patrova bloodline to continue.
How Katherine became a vampire:
Rose inadvertently turned Katherine into a vampire. Katherine killed herself when she had Rose’s blood in her system. She didn’t care that her decisions and actions were going to cause danger for Rose and Trevor. All she cared about was her safety. She learned to look out for herself when Klaus killed her entire family. She knew that he will get revenge on her, too so she’s been running from him since 1492. That’s why she faked her own death in 1864. She wanted Klaus and the original vampires to know that she died. Her plan didn’t really work out, thanks to Damon.
Bonnie and Jeremy – unlikely pair:
I don’t know about you, but I don’t see these two together as a couple. The past couple of episodes have been slowly building up the relationship between Bonnie and Jeremy. In my opinion, the only thing they have in common is the fact that they both love Elena and would do anything to protect her. Jeremy needs a nice, normal, human girl who is going to make him happy and take him away from all the “emo” stuff (nicely put, aunt Jenna.).
Rose and Damon – sex heals pain:
Rose is mourning the death of her best friend. Damon is nursing a heartbreak. They are also working toward a common goal. How can they not turn to each other for comfort and support? Even though I like Rose’s character, I don’t see any chemistry between her and Damon. Not after Damon heart-wrenchingly confessed his love to Elena and that single tear drop. How can I ever see him with another woman?
Elena and Stefan – soul mates or lost souls?
Are they back together? Are they not back together? They break up and make up numerous times in the series thus far. It’s kind of frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of Elena and Stefan. But how many times are they going to break up before they both realize they can’t live without each other? Elena had already bind herself to Stefan by having him drink her blood. Her blood makes him stronger. That’s probably the most romantic thing she could ever do for him. In return, Stefan would fight until he died to protect Elena. He would do anything, if it means Elena is safe.
On the other hand, how can they stay together when she’s human and he’s a vampire. She would grow old. He won’t. It would never work. And then there’s insecurities that Stefan has about Damon. Stefan knows his brother is in love with the same girl he was in love with. Right now he’s insecure that Elena would turn to Damon for support. Stefan doesn’t want Damon to come in between him and Elena. He also doesn’t want Elena to come in between him and Damon.
A New Kid on the Block:
Luka Martin… the new student at Mystic Falls high school. He automatically caught Bonnie’s eye. Luka is not just a normal kid. He can’t be. No one comes to Mystic Falls without having an agenda. Luka has a dad named, Jonas. I already know I’m not going to like this guy as soon as he brought up Salem witches. Then, Bonnie had a weird look when she touched Luka. The kind of look she has when she feels something bad.
It turned out that Luka and Jonas are warlocks. Nice magic trick with salt, Luka but I’m not buying it. I don’t think the Martins are warlocks or witches. I think the Martins are some of the original vampires. They are working together with Elijah. If they were real warlocks/witches, why couldn’t they lift the curse of the sun and the moon? Why did Elijah compel Slater to tell Rose to get the moonstone and the witch? Luka and Jonas have to be vampires, some of the originals. The original vampires have special abilities. Elijah was able to compel another vampire. Maybe Luka’s special ability is to move or levitate objects with his hand. And maybe, Klaus can read minds. Edward Cullen, anyone?
How to Lift the Curse of the Moonstone:
According to Katherine, you need the moonstone, the Patrova doppelganger, a vampire, a witch, and a werewolf in order to lift the curse. They need to be sacrificed. No wonder Katherine was in need of a werewolf. Katherine’s diabolical plan to return to Mystic Falls is finally revealed. She came back to get the moonstone and Elena but Damon made sure to put some dents in her plan. Katherine was trying to negotiate with Klaus for her freedom. I guess she got tired of running after 500 years.
The December 2nd episode is going to be even more epic than this week episode. There are a few things we can anticipate.
- When is Tyler going to change?
- When is Klaus going to show up?
- Will Katherine ever get out of that tomb?
- Will Damon, Rose, and Stefan find another way to break the curse?
Is it December 2nd yet?
