Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Elena, Damon, and Alaric went to Tennessee to find Stefan, Matt and Jeremy contacted Vicki’s Ghost, Klaus’ master plan fell apart when he couldn’t turn werewolves into hybrids, Stefan saved Damon’s life, Mrs. Lockwood finally learned the truth about her werewolf family, and Caroline was held hostage by her father.
This week episode, The End of the Affair, we go back in time to the roaring 20’s.
Katherine’s Back:
I was wondering where she went when season 3 began. I can’t believe I’m saying this but it’s good to see Katherine. She’s not really on my “bad guy” list this year. Klaus took her spot last year right around the ritual episode and he’s been reigning ever since. Back to Kat… what is she really up to this time around? She’s not running from Klaus anymore. Klaus let her go. Is she trailing Stefan like Damon thinks? Does Katherine really care for Stefan like she said she did?
The Windy City:
Klaus takes Stefan back to the city that meant something special to him, but he doesn’t take Stefan back to just Chicago. Klaus takes Stefan back to Chicago circa 1920’s.
I have to admit, I’m a sucker for the 20’s. One of my favorite books, The Great Gatsby is set in the 20’s and I’ve always liked the excitement of speakeasies, flapper girls, and the whole era of prohibition.
Stefan circa 1920’s was a a true ripper. He lavished in the lifestyle of a vampire. He completed shut off his humanity. Klaus keeps telling Stefan that Chicago was magical. Stefan doesn’t seem to remember much of it. Up until now, Klaus hasn’t really told Stefan why he wanted Stefan to come along with him on his journey. His hybrid army failed and now he wants some answers. Apparently, he’s going to get it from his favorite witch, who lives in Chicago.
Caroline:
Gosh, Caroline’s evil dad is such a douche! How can you be so messed up that you can torture your daughter like this? Evil Daddy wants to know how Caroline can walk in the sun, only to use it against her to torture her. He takes Caroline’s daylight ring off and burns her skin with sunlight. He says he’s trying to condition her and to change her to repress her vampire part. It’s not going to work in a day, Bill. It took Stefan 30 plus years to stay on bunny diet. Poor Caroline… Too bad we can’t call Child Services on him.
Three Becomes Two:
This time around, Alaric doesn’t come along for the adventure with Damon and Elena. Damon finds out where Stefan and Klaus are from Katherine. They go on a road trip to Chicago to find Stefan. Damon brings a bit of light reading for Elena for the car ride. One of Stefan’s diaries. The ones about the 20’s and how Stefan killed innocent people. Damon tells Elena that he wants her to be prepared for what she’s about to see in Chicago, but I think he’s gloating a bit and doing this on purpose to show Elena that Stefan’s not always the goody-too-shoe that Elena makes him out to be.
Gloria:
This is who Klaus came to see in Chicago. His favorite witch, Gloria. She sang in the speakeasy club back in the 20’s and now she runs the same bar looking no older than 45. Apparently she’s using herbs and spells to slow down her aging. Seriously, can I have some of those? I want to be forever young.
Gloria tells Klaus that it’s obvious he did something wrong because he couldn’t create hybrids. She says every spell has a loophole and to find out what it is, she needs to contact the witch who created the spell. The original witch. I didn’t know that there’s such thing as the original witch. Because the original witch is dead, Gloria needs help to contact her. She requests Klaus to bring her Rebecca. I don’t know who Rebecca is, but it doesn’t look like Klaus wants to bring Rebecca to Gloria. Gloria says Rebecca has what she needs.
Stefan and Klaus – Old Friends?:
Stefan finds a picture of him and Klaus from the 20’s with their arms around each other at Gloria’s bar. It turns out that Klaus knew Stefan from way before Stefan ever met Elena. And Rebecca is Klaus’ sister. Stefan was fooling around with Rebecca back at the speakeasy club when Klaus met Stefan for the first time. Klaus takes Stefan to the place where he keeps all his family members in the coffins. He pulls the dagger out of Rebecca’s heart. Stefan doesn’t seem to remember ever meeting Rebecca. It turns out that Stefan doesn’t remember meeting Klaus or Rebecca because Klaus compelled Stefan. One night, they were having fun in the speakeasy club and people started to shoot around with wooden bullets. Rebecca says, “he must be here”. Then, Klaus takes her away and compels Stefan to not remember them. That night, Rebecca left something of hers that she really treasures. Her necklace that a witch gave her. The very same necklace that Elena now wears around her neck.
Stefan’s Chi-Town Pad:
Stefan has his home away from home in Chicago. Damon takes Elena there to find Stefan and also to show her what the Stefan did in his ripper days. There is a secret closet behind the shelves in his apartment where he keeps alcohol and the wall full of victims’ names. There must be at least 200 names on the wall. They don’t call him the ripper for nothing.
The Close Call:
Ok, Damon… how can you be so stupid to leave Elena alone at Stefan’s apartment? Didn’t he think that Stefan and Klaus might stop by while he’s away? Elena hides in the secret closet, but when Klaus opens the shelves to show Stefan the list of names, I thought that was it. Klaus is going to see Elena. Thankfully, it was Stefan who walks into the closet and sees Elena. They see each other for the first time since he left Mystic Falls and that was a really sweet moment where they didn’t need to say a word.
Operation Rescue Caroline:
Thank goodness for Tyler and Caroline’s mom. Because of them, Caroline is rescued. I’m really glad to see that Sheriff Forbes is completely on team Caroline. She may not be team vampire but she’s definitely going to protect her daughter. After going through something like this, all Caroline needs is a friend and Tyler is there for her. A vampire and a werewolf… let the forbidden love story begin.
The Confrontation:
Damon gets Stefan away from Klaus so they can talk. Stefan tells Damon why Elena is the key to Klaus’ master plan. Damon finally understands why Klaus’ plan did not work. He goes inside the bar to keep Klaus occupied when Elena and Stefan talk. Elena begs Stefan to come home and tries to shoot him with vervain, but Stefan is to fast for her. It’s hard to let go of someone who you are in love with. Even when Stefan tells her that it’s never going to be the same anymore, he never wants to see her again, and he doesn’t want to be with her; I’m finding it hard to believe Stefan’s words. He’s doing all this to protect her. Yes, my heart breaks a little in this scene.
Key Points:
- Katherine is in Chicago. Katherine was also in Chicago back in the 20’s at that club. She witnessed the whole thing with Stefan, Klaus, and Rebecca.
- Elena’s necklace is the key to contact the original witch.
- Elena is the key to complete Klaus’ master plan.
Katherine and Stefan see each other again next week. Damon is back to feeding on people? Bonnie is back. Let’s hope that Klaus never finds that necklace or Elena.
