“Love Is A Vampire’s Greatest Weakness” Commentary on Episode 2.19 “Klaus”

by Bonnie on April 26, 2011

There you have it folks – from a man who should know. Right? Just one problem. This “man” is both a vampire and a werewolf, so presumably what he says next is true too – at least for him.

Klaus: “And we are not weak, Elijah. We do not feel and we do not care.”

Ah, there’s the rub, because devoted viewers of this show know, vampires do feel and they do care.

Stefan’s friend, Lexi, told us the truth about vampires in “The Dinner Party”.

Lexi: “Love, Stefan. That’s the point.”

Stefan had been using the dying men in the triage as a source of blood to feed his cravings. In order to feed, he felt it was necessary to shut out his emotions. But Lexi made him face his emotions. She let him know that while it may be difficult at first…

Lexi: “Once you can hurt, you can love.”

It is not that vampires have no feelings – it’s that all their feelings – both pain and pleasure – are intensified. So as Lexi said, when they hurt, they really hurt, but…

Lexi: When we love…”

We can’t choose what we feel – that’s the tough part about emotions. In order to feel love, we must also feel pain.

I believe that what Klaus says is true for him. He doesn’t feel and he doesn’t care. Whether this is because he is a hybrid, or because he’s been repressing his emotions for a thousand years, or because he’s fooling himself is unclear.

It is also possible that his thousand year quest for the elements to end his curse, and his desire for power, have indeed - as Elijah suggests – driven him mad.

But for Elijah, feelings remain.

We see it when he regains consciousness in the Salvatore’s house and thinks he is looking into the face of Katerina Petrova.

Elijah had feelings for this woman back in 1491. It is plain in the look on his face when he first sets eyes on her at his brother’s birthday celebration. He even says so.

Elijah: “You remind me of someone”.

And his smile is full of warmth and remembrance.

We also see a glimmer of recognition on Klaus’ face when he first sees Katerina from across the room. But Klaus’s smile is not warm. It looks more like smug satisfaction.

Who is the woman that Katerina reminds them of – a former lover? Is this history repeating - two brothers, falling for the same woman, losing her and chasing her across the centuries? At this point, we don’t know.

What we do know is that Elijah, unlike his half-brother, has not lost his capacity to feel emotions. It is his emotions that have driven him to find a way to protect Katerina – the doppelganger – while still allowing Klaus to break the curse.

But Klaus won’t risk it. He accuses his brother of “falling in love” as if it were a death sentence.

Klaus: “Love is a vampire’s greatest weakness. And we are not weak, Elijah.  We do not feel and we do not care.”

That may be the way Klaus views love, but it does not apply to Elijah. He carries a torch.  He remembers.

Elijah: “We did once.”

And I believe that the reason Elijah treats Elena with deference and trust is because Elena reminds him of the Katerina he first met.  Or the woman Katerina reminds him of.

Katerina: “True love is not real unless it is returned.”

Elijah replies that he doesn’t believe in love, but contradicts his statement with a subtle look – a memory he is reliving – or a feeling he is having in the moment. Katerina doesn’t appear to apprehend the look, but her next statement is a key to the woman she was then.

Katerina: “If we cease to believe in love, why would we want to live?”

Elijah may have fallen in love with that Katerina. But once she discovered Klaus’ true intentions, Katerina appeared to take on Klaus’ perspective. She abandoned her feelings in order to survive.

And Elijah will not make the mistake of trusting her again. Falling in love with her nearly got him killed at his brother’s hands when Klaus discovered Katerina is a vampire and can no longer be used as the doppelganger to help him break his curse.

For Elijah, Elena represents the nobler characteristics of the original Katerina. And he relates to her on that basis. Whatever he discovered in 1491 that would have protected Katerina will work on Elena now.

For some, it is almost irresistible to compare these two love stories, and many people would draw parallels between the two sets of brothers – Damon to Klaus, and Elijah to Stefan.

I disagree. I think those pairings are wrong.

Elijah is not like Stefan – he is like Damon – pining for a woman he cannot have, wanting his human feelings back because he misses them, yet guarding himself against their pain.

I can see the obvious similarities between Damon and Klaus – the “loose canon” aspects. But Klaus is a cold-blooded killer and there is nothing human about him – whereas Damon longs to be the human he once was, so he is moved by nobler – albeit misguided – motives.

I’m not buying the match-ups of Elijah-Stefan vs. Damon-Klaus. There is far more similarity between Damon and Elijah. They are both noble men…

…Stefan is simply romantic.

One more observation about love. It was said by Andie to Damon.

Andie: Love does that Damon – it changes us.”

Klaus has no love in his life. He ceased to be human centuries ago and has remained unchanged for 1000 years – unchanged in his single-minded search for the elements needed to break his curse, unchanged in his lust for power, unchanged in his hatred for his brother and anyone else who gets in his way.

But Damon’s love for Elena has changed him. When he first came back to Mystic Falls, he was much more Klaus-like. He was single-minded in his pursuit of mayhem with the sole of purpose of making his brother’s life miserable.

His love for Elena has moved him to allow emotions back into his life and take on a horrible struggle with them in order to protect her.

I believe Elijah’s feelings are genuine. I believe he will protect Elena. And I believe it because, like Damon, Elijah is a noble man. I trust him.

For all of us, love is not a weakness. It is a strength. We are all capable of great things done in love. Sometimes, love hurts. But ultimately, the pain is worth it.

“As food is needed for the body, the same way love is needed for the soul. Food strengthens the body while love strengths the soul. A person is incomplete without love.” Unknown

I agree with the parallel between the brothers putting Elijah and Damon in the same territory. I kept thinking that while I was watching.

Damon is not acting noble he’s acting like baby. Damon is caught up in keeping Elena that when some one else steps to save her, Damon runs off and throws a tantrum like a child and start sucking peoples blood. Unlike Damon, Stefan trust Elena and knows when back off and act liken adult.

Thanks for your essay : I had been drawing the Stfan/Elijah parallell until I read it. I’ve neen obsessing over the identity of the original woman that katerina and Elena resemble… I”m sure that has a particular importance. I have a feeling she may be Elijah and Klaus’ mother. Perhaps their father slaughtered her along with her werewolf lover in order to bind the curse that limits Klaus’s power. I felt Elijah’s “love” for Katerina seemed more gentle – like when she spoke about “If we cease to believe in love, why would we want to live?” it may have echoed his mother’s own passionate side. The only problem with this is that Katerina would have to be a youger version of Elijah’s mother since she obviously is younger that she is.
I”m curious as to other people’s ideas- this doppelganger thing has been driving me carzy.

Yay! Trixee is here. I’m loving all the TGAD love I’m getting at Bite On This. Thanks for just being around all these years.

    Trixee,
You apparently made Angela’s day, and any friend of Angela’s, as the saying goes. In response to your comment, I have no doubt that Season 3 will provide many details about the original family, and I am sure that the woman bears a resemblance to is the Original Mom, and possibly one of the original daughters. Quite possible you are right – Original Dad had a curse put on his hybrid son and used Mom’s blood to bind the curse. The moonstone may have been a gift to her from her Wolf Lover and thus became part of the curse. The doppleganger thread of the story is great – so many ways it can be used to enhance the mythology and move the story along. We shall see! Thanks so much for your comment.

    Krystal,
I would explain the difference in behavior between Damon and Stefan this way. I don’t know if you know anything about a “personality profile” called Myers-Briggs. If not, google it. Very useful information everyone should have. Anyway, in MB terms, Stefan is a “Thinker” and Damon is a “Feeler”. In other words, Stefan is more in his head – he thinks about things before acting. He is thoughtful and deliberate. The books in his room reflect his deep thinking (Whitman, as I recall). Damon acts first and thinks later. He is passionate in the sense that his feelings provoke his behavior. The book on his bedside table reflects his passion – Gone With The Wind! He doesn’t think – he just acts (kind of like Scarlett O’Hara – I’ll think about that tomorrow). Often, the results are disastrous. So now imagine a person whose essence is based on their feelings trying to control their feelings – All The Time. Very difficult. And make no mistake – in last week’s episode, Stefan deliberately baited Damon with that crack about “respect” – which isn’t true. Stefan was trying to get a rise out of Damon because of his own feelings – not so confident maybe? Not very mature certainly. I agree with Stefan that Damon is “using” Andie, but what is his option – horn in on his brother’s girl? I give Damon props for trying to control himself – he’s struggling but he’s making a great effort. I’m sure we will have plenty of opportunity to disagree during the final episodes and into Season 3! Thanks for your comment.

    Drea,
Thanks for your comment. It always feels great to get “validation”. Of course, we could be so wrong….LOL! We shall see, won’t we?

Bonnie so glad you wrote this commentary. The whole time watching this episode and the numerous times over the last several days, I looked more toward the similarities between Elijah from the past and Damon here and now. Katerina as a human sparked in Elijah a wanting of true emotion. For all our faults as humans, when we truly love or care we are an amazing species (sp.? And yes it’s late again and I’m grading papers again lol!) Damon as you say is a feeler and with that comes mistakes because he leads with his heart. Elijah as well but he has had about 900 more years than Damon to control it and think before acting. I too believe in the end Elijah will save Elena , but maybe not the way we expect or even want. He is a noble man and when he gives his word you can trust it. This has been thrown in every episode since “Rose”. Is it just me or does Elijah feel empathy for Damon? Because (lol) honestly Damon has given Elijah plenty of reason to end his existence. But Elijah keeps saving Damon and I can’t help feeling it’s not just because he gave Elena his word. Elijah relate to Damon. Last episode when Damon won’t apologize to Elijah just to stay in Elenas good graces. Stefan’s apology was calculated to do that. Sorry but his look to Damon was like we gotta do what and instead of standing by his brother and how he really feels, he bales and gives a fakes apology to make himself look good in Elena’s eyes. Then, watch Elijah eyes follow Damon as Damon leaves there is a hint of understanding. Elijah likes Damon despite Damon. Lol! Could be wrong but I can’t shake that feeling. Go back and watch I would like to know if anyone else is getting that sense of connection between Elijah and Damon. Anyways, for those who are Stefan lovers please believe me when I say I like Stefan I just think shiny white knight armoir needs a little dirt, grime, and blood on it. Never trust a hero who looks picture perfect… I’ll always take the one beat up and banged up it means they are fighting. Guess that’s why I find myself pulling for Damon. He’s so broken and should be a monster without feelings but you see that glimmer of goodness in him and realize he is still a noble man, just lost. I wish the writers would show Stefan struggling with the demon inside him more. The rare super speedy struggling Stefan was more compelling than the look at me I do everything right Stefan. Sorry my angst is with the writers not the characters or actors. Still waiting for a love triangle that apparently the writers are never going to do. Anyone care I ship Caroline because she rocks as a vampire! All 1st season I just wanted her character to die. But hey got my wish and dang if they didn’t bring her back as a vamp and well I love her now! That’s it for now hope to hear back, I love reading and discussing with other fans!

LOL!!!! Sweet baby goodness didn’t mean to write an essay. Please chalk it up to TVD madness …. Crazy about the show!

  • Bonnie

Tanya, please don’t apologize. Essays are good! There is nothing more fun than batting the plotlines and the characters around. I have watched “Klaus” 4 times – more than any other episode except “Rose”. I believe there is a bond between Elijah and Damon, but I’m saving my speculation on what that bond is for a post here – perhaps after tonight’s episode. Not sure. I’m waiting to see what happens tonight!
Seriously, thanks for the long commentary.

Thanks for the warm welcome Bonnie and Angela. Lately my Gossip Girl passions have seriously shifted towards Vampire diaries, so you’ll probably be seeing more of me in the comments.

    Trixee,
I hope we will – Vampire Diaries is the place for passions!
