Previously on the Vampire Diaries, Caroline kissed Tyler and Matt, Rose suffered from a werewolf bite and died, Damon tried to help Rose but ended up killing her instead to end her suffering, Jules told Tyler the truth about Mason, and Stefan went out looking for Isobel but came back home with Uncle John.
This week episode, Daddy Issues has all the makings of a great hour of television. You will gasp. You will cry. Most of all, you will fall even more in love with these characters.
Uncle John – the protective father:
This is a new side of Uncle John. Up to this point, John has never played a concerned father role in Elena’s life. All of a sudden, he came back to town and wanted to protect Elena. He’s even willing to make alliance with Stefan and Damon to protect her. This is not the John we are used to. The John Gilbert we know will never be allies with vampires. He would kill himself before he put his trust in vampires. Because of these facts, I’m with Elena and Damon on this one. I do not trust Uncle John. He has a hidden agenda and his intentions are not pure.
Stefan’s Trust in John:
Stefan went looking for Isobel in the previous episode, but he found John instead. Here’s what I don’t understand about Stefan. Wasn’t he the one whothreatened John to leave town and get out of Elena’s life? That was only twelve episodes ago, Mr. Salvatore. Your memory cannot be that bad; especially for someone who keeps a journal. Oh and another thing, he tried to “barbecue” your brother (thanks, Damon!). How could you trust John so easily? I understand that Stefan would do anything to protect Elena. He doesn’t trust Elijah and he thinks Elena is putting herself in more danger by trusting Elijah. I also understand that Stefan is desperate. He’s in desperate need to protect Elena, but Uncle John…? Really? This is Stefan being naive at best.
Jules’ Wolf Pack:
Jules wasn’t lying when she told Tyler that the others like them are on their way to Mystic Falls. Her boyfriend, Brady wanted revenge on the vampires who killed Mason. “We live by a code of loyalty, blah, blah, blah.” Wake up! Mason wasn’t loyal to you. Mason’s loyalty was with Katherine, the vampire. He didn’t even tell them about the Moonstone. Mason came back to Mystic Falls to get that moonstone for Katherine. Mason was in love with Katherine and it is obvious that his loyalty lied with Katherine and his family. What was the point of getting revenge for someone who didn’t care about you? Mason didn’t want to be part of the Pack. Things would have turned out a lot differently if he did. So, this lead me to wonder why the wolf pack is really here. Jules said that she wants Tyler to join them. She said she just wanted to protect him. This can’t be all true. What is the real reason behind Jules’ reasons for wanting Tyler to join them? What are they hiding?
No More Girly Little Caroline:
Caroline… she breaks my heart in this episode. I had to look away from the TV screen when she was locked in the cage and Brady was torturing her. She was a champ in this episode. Caroline had grown up a lot in the past 12 episodes since she transitioned, but this is a new level of maturity for Caroline. She was tortured to a point where she almost died. She was betrayed by her friend. She had to lie to the boy she loves in order to protect him, and all the while trying to keep a brave face. Caroline may be stuck at seventeen forever, but she is growing up and maturing with each episode.
Doctor Saves the Day:
Dr. Martin, the warlock whose name sounds a lot like a shoe company, saves Damon, Stefan, and Caroline. He gave aneurysm to the wolf pack so they passed out before they were able to kill our beloved vampires. So far, Elijah is keeping his word. He’s making sure that his warlocks are helping him keep Elena’s friends and family stay safe.
Tyler – the dumbest wolf in town:
Oh Tyler… what am I going to do with you? He caused a lot of trouble in this episode. I understand that he’s confused. After all, he’s just a kid and he just found out that his uncle has been murdered by the vampires, who he thought were his friends. Caroline, the girl he trusted, lied to him. He doesn’t know who to trust, but he should have used his head and think. Stefan told him what really happened to Mason and why it happened. Tyler knew how Caroline risked her life to help him during full moon. Why didn’t he help Caroline when she needed him? His little wolf friends were torturing Caroline with wooden bullets and vervain. Tyler let it happened. He even hesitated before opening the cage door for Caroline. What kind of friend does that? Oh and as if this wasn’t enough, he told Jules and Brady about the moonstone. Things are going to get more bloody in Mystic Falls. Great job, Tyler!
Honorable Mentions:
- Damon said it again that he’s in love with Elena. Of course he didn’t say it to Elena, but he said it again out loud which is a great progress for Damon. I don’t want these two together yet. Damon needs to come to terms with himself that it is ok to be a good guy. He needs to accept that it is ok for him to want to be a good guy because of Elena. They can never be together until he accepts that.
- Jeremy and Bonnie were being cute and cozy in this episode. It is really good to see Jeremy smiles, but I couldn’t help but think that Bonnie’s only with him because Luka lied to her. Jeremy Gilbert is no second best, Bonnie. He may not be a warlock but he really cares about you.
- Matt and Caroline needs to get back together already. The look on his face when he realized Caroline was lying to him was heartbreaking. It looks like Tyler is out of the picture for Caroline, so maybe there’s hope for Matt.
- Jenna finally found out that Uncle John is Elena’s birth father. “How is it possible to keep a secret like that?” Oh Aunt Jenna… there’s so much you don’t know about your family and your town.
- The slumber party at Carolines’ house! It was a precious moment when Caroline, Elena, and Bonnie were hugging each other. Brownie points for Stefan.
- What is John’s plan? I knew he had a hidden agenda. What is he planning with Isobel? Why is he going to help Katherine get out of the tomb? I think John needs a reminder that Katherine cut off his fingers and tried to kill him.
Things are getting more and more complicated. Elijah has the moonstone. Jules and Brady are going to be after the moonstone. Tyler is walking on the wrong side of the tracks. John, Katherine, and Isobel have a plan that no one knows about. I just hope that next week isn’t full moon. There are three werewolves in town and they are vengeful.
