I love Stefan and Damon when they are together. I love how they have evolved, and how their bickering isn’t evil and twisted anymore, how it’s brotherly and playful (and how Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder look like they really are brothers when in scenes together).
The final moments of 2.08 – Rose caught me absolutely of guard; I never expected Damon to be so noble. More human, yes, more protective over the people he loves, yes, even more selfless, but I did not expect him to do what he did. He did do it for himself, to get that “I love you” of his chest, but he also did it for Stefan, his kid brother who he thinks is the better man. Yes, if you love someone you will let them go be happy even if that doesn’t include you in the equation, but what if Damon let Elena go (at least for now) because he loves Stefan too much to hurt him this way?
In last season’s flashbacks, we saw Stefan and Damon Salvatore when they were human, saw how close they were as brothers, as friends, and we saw how Stefan turned Damon, and Damon’s reaction to that. They have spent a century bickering, Damon resenting his kid brother for turning him, and Stefan resenting himself for being such a monster. For a whole century they kept each other trapped in the circle of blame and jealousy. It looked like Damon is acting out only because of his lost love, Katherine, but I think he was angry at his brother too, maybe even at himself.
People thought Katherine’s return to Mystic Falls might bring the worst out of Damon (especially after Kat’s constant “I love Stefan”), she, so far, brought out the best. When will Stefan confront over Damon’s love for Elena? As soon as all the bad things stop happening in their town? Most think the conversation is inevitable but I don’t think that will happen anymore. Damon needed to tell Elena what he feels, but he also knew she can’t know that, not for real, not out loud. And even though Stefan being the better guy for Elena (or, as Damon stated it, being more deserving of her) may be arguable, Damon, with that scene and that tear also said he loves his brother more than he ever admits. Stefan finally apologizing for turning Damon also said the same thing: although he had a lot of problems with Damon’s behavior, and in future he might find himself fighting him for Elena and maybe he is not that secure when it comes to Damon and Elena, he loves his brother.
As complicated as Stefan’s and Damon relationship is, and when you’ve been around for more than 150 years relationships tend to be complicated, they are there for each other, they are an united front when it comes to protecting the people they love (and the girl they love), and after all, they are family.
I strongly believe Damon and Stefan Salvatore will have each others back as long as it takes, and no matter what happens.
