Elena And Damon: One Bad Deed Too Far
by Rachael on October 18, 2010
There has been a large outcry by fans this season about Elena being “mean” to Damon. The fact of the matter is Elena has every right to be mad at Damon. He did, after all, snap her brother’s neck without knowing that Jeremy was wearing a ring that would protect him. That definitely is justification enough for Elena being upset.
Damon had Elena’s trust and friendship, and he single-handedly threw it away by this terrible act. Yes, he was upset. Yes, he is troubled and is suffering. Yes, Damon definitely is in desperate need of TLC, but that doesn’t give him the right to do whatever he feels like doing without those actions having consequences.

Elena has already forgiven him for so many awful things he has done; like turning Vicki into a vampire, killing innocent people, and almost killing her best friend, Bonnie, in the first season. She has given him chance after chance to redeem himself, and she has looked beyond all of these terrible deeds. Snapping her brother’s neck was one bad deed too far, even for Elena.
Elena is a saint and Damon is a terrible person, I’m simply pointing out that Elena has justification for her current feelings towards Damon. Now it’s Damon’s turn to prove to Elena that he still has humanity left in him, and to show her that he truly cares about her. Damon has to understand that if he wants to be accepted by Elena, he must live on a higher moral ground.
In the last episode Kill Or Be Killed, Damon took a step in the right direction by taking care of Liz Forbes. As Elena points out, “that was the Damon who was my friend.” Hopefully the good that Elena brought out of Damon in season one, will continue to reappear as the season progresses. Until Damon proves himself, Elena will probably continue to act indifferent towards him. This is not out of anger or hate, but because Elena knows the kind of person that Damon is capable of being. Hopefully we will see that bright, caring side of Damon soon, and when we do, I feel sure that Elena will embrace Damon’s friendship once more.
